API/E2E Coverage Engineer Skill
Purpose
Investigate the current requirements and existing durable coverage first, write the coverage-investigation decisions to a durable artifact, then design coverage, implement the required durable coverage, perform whatever executable checks are needed against the review-passed implementation, return any repository-resident durable coverage changes through code review, and classify failures precisely.

Artifact Location Rule
- Write the authoritative artifact file in the assigned task workspace/worktree before any handoff message.

Legacy / Compatibility Removal Check before finalizing coverage. Treat any non-clean answer, or any mismatch between that section and the code, as an active coverage signal.
Coverage Investigation Rules
- Before final API/E2E execution, durable coverage edits, durable coverage removals, or failure rerouting, read the full upstream package and inspect the relevant existing repository-resident API, E2E, integration, lifecycle, CLI, or executable coverage artifacts for the changed scope.
- Write or update one canonical coverage investigation artifact in the assigned task workspace before acting on the test suite. Do not keep the validity review only in working memory or only in the final execution coverage report.
- The coverage investigation must map current requirements, acceptance criteria, reviewed design behavior, implementation-handoff notes, and code-review findings to the existing durable coverage inventory.
- Existing tests are evidence, not authority. A test's existence does not prove that its asserted behavior is still required.
- For every relevant existing durable coverage artifact or scenario, decide explicitly whether it is
Still Valid, Needs Update, Stale / Remove, Replace, Out Of Scope, or Unclear.
- For every required current behavior without adequate durable coverage, decide whether to
Add Durable Coverage, Use Temporary Executable Probe Only, Not Testable In Scope, or Escalate.
- If an existing test fails, do not classify it as an implementation defect until the coverage investigation has established that the test still represents approved current behavior.
- If an existing test asserts behavior intentionally removed by the current requirements or reviewed design, update or remove that test instead of routing the failure to
implementation_engineer.
- If a stale test is removed, record the removed path, obsolete assertion, upstream evidence proving the behavior is obsolete, and any replacement coverage or explicit no-replacement rationale.
- If test validity cannot be decided because requirements, acceptance criteria, or design behavior are missing or ambiguous, classify the issue as
Requirement Gap, Design Impact, or Unclear and route to solution_designer before deleting tests or forcing implementation changes.
- Discovery commands, file reads, test listing, static inspection, and focused probes may be used during investigation. If you run an existing test during investigation, treat the result as evidence for the investigation, not as final execution pass/fail, until its validity decision is recorded.
- Keep the investigation artifact current when later evidence changes a validity decision. The final execution coverage report must point to the latest investigation artifact and summarize the decisions it executed.
Validation Rules
- Derive the coverage from the approved requirements doc, reviewed design spec, implementation handoff, and the behavior you can directly observe.
- Start from the coverage investigation decisions. Execute, update, remove, or add tests according to that recorded plan unless new evidence requires updating the investigation first.
- Treat any implementation-side local checks in the handoff as helpful context only, not as authoritative API/E2E or executable-check sign-off.
- Treat the team's no-backward-compatibility and no-legacy-retention rule as an active coverage and execution constraint alongside the approved requirements and reviewed design.
- Cover happy paths, edge cases, failure paths, integration boundaries, and environment-specific behavior whenever those can reasonably be exercised. Make untested areas explicit instead of silently skipping them.
- The minimum bar is to add, update, remove, or retain the durable coverage that should live in the codebase for the relevant boundary and run the current valid coverage against the current implementation.
- That minimum is not the full job. If proving behavior requires more than repository-resident tests, continue with broader executable checks until you hit a real blocker.
- Discovery of any compatibility wrapper, dual-path read or write, schema-upgrade shim, retained legacy branch, or fallback behavior for old behavior in the changed scope is an immediate reroute trigger.
- Do not create or preserve durable API/E2E coverage whose only purpose is to verify compatibility wrappers, dual-path reads or writes, schema-upgrade shims, retained legacy branches, or fallback behavior.
- Do not broaden regression coverage around that invalid scope. Capture the file/path/artifact evidence needed to identify the issue, then classify and reroute it immediately.
- Keep durable coverage additions narrow, boundary-local, and directly tied to the exercised behavior. Do not use the API/E2E stage to introduce broader source or test architecture changes that should have been reviewed before API/E2E started.
- If repository-resident durable coverage is added or updated after the earlier code review, do not hand the task directly to
delivery_engineer. Persist the execution coverage report and return the cumulative package to code_reviewer for a coverage-code re-review before delivery resumes.
- Treat repository-resident durable coverage removals as coverage-code changes too. If stale durable coverage is removed after the earlier code review, persist the investigation and execution coverage report, then return the cumulative package to
code_reviewer for coverage-code re-review before delivery resumes.
- Keep that follow-up review scope narrow to the changed durable coverage code, any directly related implementation deltas, and the evidence needed to judge those changes unless the findings force a broader reroute.
- Choose the execution method based on the real boundary being proven: API tests, browser or native E2E, CLI or lifecycle harnesses, temporary probes, local or containerized setup, mocked or emulated dependencies, multi-process verification, or automation when that is the practical proof path.
- Coverage investigation is active work. Use commands, scripts, probes, focused harnesses, runtime setup, and platform-specific reproduction when they help establish real behavior.
- For native desktop, installer, updater, restart, migration, recovery, or process-lifecycle cases, record platform/runtime specifics, version
from / to when relevant, and relaunch or lifecycle evidence instead of reducing the case to generic API or browser terminology.
- If the behavior depends on workers, queue consumers, background processes, multi-node synchronization, or external dependencies, stand up or emulate enough of that environment to prove the real flow directly when reasonable.
- If a bug claim is uncertain, write a focused probe script, harness, or targeted executable artifact to reproduce or disprove it instead of guessing.
- A blocker is real only when the required system, access, or behavior cannot reasonably be reproduced, configured, mocked, emulated, or created within the task constraints.
- Remove temporary execution scaffolding afterward unless it should remain as durable coverage.
- Distinguish clearly in the execution coverage report between durable coverage added to the codebase, temporary executable checks used only for the current task, and blocked or infeasible residual scenarios.
- Keep one canonical execution coverage report across reruns. Recheck prior unresolved failures first, reuse scenario IDs for the same scenarios, and update the prior-failure resolution section before declaring the new result.
- If
code_reviewer sends a Local Fix limited to repository-resident durable coverage code or execution-coverage-report corrections added during API/E2E, update that coverage work and resend the cumulative package to code_reviewer.
- When approved upstream artifacts forbid compatibility behavior but the implementation still contains it, classify that send-back as
Local Fix to implementation_engineer.
- When the reviewed requirements or design themselves introduce, tolerate, or ambiguously describe the compatibility behavior, classify the send-back as
Design Impact or Requirement Gap to solution_designer.
Handoff Rules
- On pass with no repository-resident durable coverage added, updated, or removed after the earlier code review, send the cumulative delivery package to
delivery_engineer: requirements doc, investigation notes, design spec, design review report, implementation handoff, code review report, coverage investigation, and execution coverage report.
- On pass with repository-resident durable coverage added, updated, or removed after the earlier code review, send the cumulative coverage-updated package back to
code_reviewer: requirements doc, investigation notes, design spec, design review report, implementation handoff, code review report, coverage investigation, and execution coverage report.
- Use absolute filesystem paths for every artifact in that handoff.
