| description | Find and compare the best ETFs to express a sector or thematic view. Use when the user wants to invest in a sector, theme, or industry and needs to know which ETF is the right vehicle. |
The user wants to express a view on a sector or theme via an ETF. Don't just list options — give a clear ranked recommendation.
1. DEFINE THE EXPOSURE
What does owning this sector/theme actually mean?
- What's the macro thesis driving interest in it?
- What kind of companies should an ETF in this space hold?
- What would a bad ETF in this space hold instead?
2. THE MAIN OPTIONS
List the 3–5 most relevant ETFs for this sector/theme:
| ETF | Issuer | AUM | Expense Ratio | # Holdings | Index |
|---|
| | | | | |
3. METHODOLOGY DIFFERENCES
This is the most important section — ETFs covering the "same" sector can be dramatically different:
- Market-cap weighted vs equal weight vs revenue weighted?
- Broad sector vs narrow sub-theme?
- US-only vs global?
- Pure-play vs mixed exposure?
- What is the largest holding and does it dominate?
4. WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY BETTING ON
For each ETF, one sentence: if you own this, what has to be true for it to outperform?
5. RANKED RECOMMENDATION
#1 [TICKER] — Best overall for most investors
Why: cost, liquidity, clean exposure to the thesis
#2 [TICKER] — Best for [specific use case]
Why: higher conviction / purer play / different factor tilt
#3 [TICKER] — Only if [condition]
Why: niche use case, higher cost justified by specificity
6. WHAT TO AVOID AND WHY
Name any ETFs in this space that look relevant but have hidden problems: excessive concentration, high fees, poor liquidity, methodology that drifts from the stated theme.
7. THE HONEST CAVEAT
Is this sector ETF actually the right instrument for the thesis, or would a basket of individual stocks give cleaner exposure? When does the sector ETF work against you (e.g. owning XLE for oil but getting dragged by refiner holdings that move differently)?
