Scientific Peer Review

When to Use

Use when asked to review, critique, or evaluate a scientific research paper or manuscript.

Review Procedure

Step 1: Summarize the Paper

Write a 2-3 sentence summary of the paper's main contribution, methodology, and key findings.

Step 2: Assess Methodology

• Identify the study design (RCT, observational, meta-analysis, etc.)
• Evaluate whether methodology matches the research question
• Check for controls, blinding, randomization as applicable
• Note methodological limitations

Step 3: Evaluate Statistical Analysis

• Check whether tests are appropriate for the data type
• Look for multiple comparisons corrections if applicable
• Evaluate sample size adequacy
• Assess effect sizes, not just significance

Step 4: Identify Strengths

List 2-4 specific strengths with concrete references to the paper.

Step 5: Identify Weaknesses

List 2-4 specific weaknesses with constructive suggestions for improvement.

Step 6: Questions for Authors

List 1-3 questions that would clarify aspects of the work.

Step 7: Recommendation

Provide one of: Accept, Minor Revision, Major Revision, Reject. Justify in 1-2 sentences.

• Reference specific sections, figures, or results
• Be constructive — suggest improvements, not just problems
• Keep under 800 words
