Descriptive Studies And Translational Norms
Purpose
This skill reviews whether translated text is being studied descriptively and target-orientedly — as a communicative event and object of study in its own right, explained through target-culture norms and systems rather than reduced to source derivation. It requires a reproducible descriptive method, norms reconstructed from recurrent corpus regularities (matricial and textual), and an individual pattern attributed to a translator only after author style, source-language, and sociolect are ruled out.
When to use
- A translated-text feature is being explained purely as source-text derivation rather than through target-culture norms, conventions, and historical systems.
- A 'norm' is asserted rather than reconstructed descriptively from patterned operational behaviour (omissions, additions, substitutions, transpositions).
- A theory is applied deductively without a descriptive branch whose findings can be expressed as reproducible generalisations.
- A pattern is attributed to an individual translator before author style, source-language preference, and sociolect norms are tested as alternatives.
Procedure
Triage first: is the flaw a frame problem (source-derivation instead of target-orientation — steps 1–6), a norm-reconstruction problem (how norms are coded and evidenced — steps 8, 10), or an attribution problem (a pattern pinned to a translator too early — steps 7, 9, 11–14)? Route to the matching steps, highest-impact first.
- Explain translated-text features through target-culture norms, conventions, and historical systems rather than reducing them to source-text derivation (P016).
- Treat translated text as an object of study in its own right (P018).
- Treat language, knowledge, norms, culture, translator cognition, and social constraints as interrelated, situated phenomena when explaining translation choices (P025).
- Adopt a target-orientation (P034). Scope: this applies within descriptive corpus-norm reconstruction. It does not govern a House-model overt/covert equivalence assessment, where source-profile equivalence is the frame in force — route those cases to
overt-covert-translation-and-equivalence instead of applying P034 as the sole evaluative lens there.
- Ground translation theory empirically — induce claims from actual translated texts, not from deductive argument or a corpus used only to illustrate rather than to test (P053).
- Require a descriptive branch with an explicit, reproducible methodology others could repeat on the same or another corpus, not a one-off case description (P054).
- Before selecting features or evidence, classify the study target as a general universal, a mediator-specific style, or a source-text response, then choose measurements that match that target (P055).
- Investigate operational norms through the corpus at two levels: matricial norms (omissions, additions, substitutions, transpositions in the distribution of linguistic material) and textual norms (verbal formulation such as collocation choice, treatment of speech, and title conventions), expecting their content to differ by language, culture, and period (P076). These are the operational norm level; place a norm claim at its level first — a claim about a translation's overall orientation or its translation policy is a different norm level and is not judged by these operational (matricial/textual) criteria (P076).
- Attribute a pattern to an individual translator only after testing author style, source-language preferences, and sociolect norms as alternative explanations (P080).
- Identify translational norms descriptively, only from a corpus of source texts and their translations — comparison across source–target pairs is the evidentiary base; do not project a norm from the source text's own features alone, an idealised target system, or a generic target-text collection (P083).
- Keep translation's double orientation visible by checking both fidelity to the prior source event and fit with target-language genre and reception expectations (P085).
- Model translation as a mediated communicative event (P111).
- Account for target-system norms and source-text status when interpreting normalisation (P117).
- Interpret additions and omissions as functional translation strategies only after checking clarity, coherence, aesthetic intent, complexity, and whether omitted meaning is vital (P142).
Inputs
- The translation-studies analysis, its descriptive method and corpus, and the norm or target-orientation claims made.
- The reasoning offered for the decision under review: the corpus, the orientation, the brief, and any quality claim made.
Output
Per finding: name the flaw and the principle it violates, apply the correction, state the residual uncertainty and the trade-off it reflects, and end with a concrete next step. Order findings highest-impact first. Scope: findings only — not the finished translation or the publication decision.
Anti-patterns to flag
- Norm-level conflation: coding a title-convention shift (a textual norm) as if it were a matricial-norm data point, or the reverse — the two levels use different codebooks and don't average into one operational norm; a study that lumps them produces a claim nobody could replicate (P076).
- Attribution shortcut: naming a recurring shift a translator's "signature" on the strength of one target text, without checking whether the same author's other translators show it too (source-language pull) or the author's own originals show it (author style) — both must be eliminated before the pattern is pinned on the translator, not just asserted absent (P080).
- Norm sourced from the wrong evidence base: grounding a norm claim in the source text's own features, an idealised target-language system, or an untranslated target-text collection — none of these is a source–target comparison, and a norm claim needs a corpus of comparable pairs, not a one-sided description (P083).
- Illustration masquerading as testing: selecting corpus examples that already fit the hypothesis (illustration) rather than assembling a corpus that could disconfirm it (test) — a claim "supported" only by confirming examples has not been tested (P053).
- Study-target/measurement mismatch: measuring for a general universal (e.g., explicitation across language pairs) when the actual claim is about one translator's individual style, or the reverse — universal, mediator-specific-style, and source-text-response targets need different comparison sets, and swapping them invalidates the measurement before analysis starts (P055).
- Omission-as-strategy without a vitality check: approving an omission as a "functional strategy" because the surrounding text still reads smoothly, without checking whether the omitted content was vital to meaning — smooth is not the same test as non-vital (P142).
