Supply Chain Attack Taxonomy

Category 1: Dependency Confusion

Attacker publishes malicious public package with same name as private internal package.

• Attack vector: npm/pypi/gem package registries
• Detection: Compare package origin (public vs. private registry)
• Mitigation: Scoped packages (@org/package), private registry with proxy config

Category 2: Typosquatting

Attacker publishes requesrs (typo of requests) hoping developers mistype.

• Attack vector: All package managers
• Detection: Automated typo-detection scanning (check-typosquatting)
• Mitigation: Allowlist of approved packages, SCA in CI/CD

Category 3: Malicious Maintainer Takeover

Legitimate package taken over (xz-utils, node-ipc, colors.js).

• Detection: Sudden behavioral change in new version, new maintainer with short history
• Mitigation: Pin exact versions, review diffs before upgrading major packages
• Signal: Unexpected binary additions, obfuscated code, new network permissions

Category 4: Build Pipeline Compromise (SolarWinds style)

Build server compromised → malicious code injected into signed artifacts.

For each component:

1. Supplier name: Organization that created the component
2. Component name: Package/library name
3. Component version: Exact version
4. Other unique identifiers: CPE, PURL (Package URL)
5. Dependency relationship: How component relates to parent
6. Author of SBOM data: Who generated the SBOM
7. Timestamp: When SBOM was generated
