Adopted by: NFL Combine preparation programs (EXOS, Bommarito Performance), Olympic sprint coaches, and elite team sport academies (Premier League, NBA G-League, NCAA Division I programs) structure SAQ training as a discrete, periodized component — separate from conditioning — because speed is a skill that degrades without targeted practice. Steps

1. Assess the athlete's current speed profile

Follow the progression hierarchy for every training block:

3. Train linear speed mechanics

• Acceleration phase (0-30m): forward lean, aggressive arm drive, triple extension, push behind hips
• Max velocity phase (30m+): tall posture, cyclical stride, high knee lift, toe dorsiflexion, elastic ground contact
• Drill examples: A-skips, B-skips, wicket runs, resisted sleds (≤15% body mass for acceleration, <10% for max velocity), wicket sprints

4. Develop change-of-direction mechanics

COD quality requires three components:

1. Deceleration: penultimate-step braking, low heel contact, eccentric quad loading
2. Plant foot: single-leg stability, hip abductor strength, ankle stiffness
3. Re-acceleration: push angle, hip extension power

5. Program SAQ within the weekly structure

SAQ training requires full CNS readiness — schedule:

• After dynamic warm-up, before conditioning or strength work
• Frequency: 2-3 sessions/week in off-season; 1-2 sessions/week in-season (higher intensity, lower volume)
• Volume: 15-30 total reps/session for sprint work; rest 1-3 min between quality reps (full recovery = quality output)
• Fatigue is the enemy of speed training — stop when mechanics deteriorate

6. Progress through the training block

Week 1-2: technique at 80-90% effort; Week 3-4: 90-100% with cue focus; Week 5-6: reactive, game-speed.

Common Mistakes

• Using SAQ as conditioning: Ladder drills done for heart rate have no speed transfer. Speed requires maximal intent with full rest.
• Skipping deceleration training: Most ACL injuries occur during deceleration. COD ability depends on the ability to brake, not just accelerate.
• Random drill selection: Drills should match the movement demands of the sport. A basketball player needs multi-directional; a 100m sprinter needs linear mechanics.

When NOT to Use

• Athlete returning from lower-limb injury — apply design-return-to-play-protocol first.
• Pre-season conditioning priority outweighs speed quality — acknowledge the trade-off explicitly.
