What this skill does
Given a markdown file, for every fenced code block:
- Extract the snippet, its starting line number in the source file, and the language tag on the fence.
- Verify it with the language's checker, always pinned to the reference project under
projects/:
- Python (
```python): pure-syntax check with ast.parse, then pyright from the venv in projects/python-project/.
- Rust (
```rust): cargo check as a temporary bin target inside projects/rust-project/ (pinned toolchain + Cargo.toml dependencies).
- Scala (
```scala): scala-cli compile pinned to the Scala version and libraryDependencies parsed from projects/scala-project/build.sbt (cats, cats-effect, zio, iron available to snippets).
- TypeScript (
```typescript): tsc --noEmit --strict from the pinned compiler in projects/typescript-project/. Uses lib: ES2022 with no DOM (plus a small console shim) so domain type names in the docs don't collide with browser globals.
- Lean 4 (
```lean): lake env lean against the pinned toolchain in projects/lean-project/ (lean-toolchain). Each snippet is type-checked as an ordinary .lean compilation unit — top-level def/inductive/example/#check are valid as-is, so no wrapping is needed. #eval/#check info output is ignored; only error: diagnostics fail a snippet.
- Produce a report — markdown for humans, JSON for tooling — pointing at the exact fence line and showing verbatim error output from the checker.
The point is to make documentation code trustworthy: readers should be able to copy a snippet out of a doc and have it work. When that's not the case, we want a fast, automated way to find every offender.
Why pyright and not execution
The instinct is to actually run the code and see what explodes. Don't. Executing arbitrary snippets from a markdown file is slow, has side effects, and still won't catch things that fail in only some call sites.
Pyright runs in strict mode (configured in projects/python-project/pyproject.toml) with several additional checks turned on: reportImplicitOverride, reportMissingTypeStubs, reportUninitializedInstanceVariable, deprecateTypingAliases, reportUnnecessaryComparison, and the strict*Inference family. This was chosen deliberately for docs verification — documentation code should set the standard, not lag it — but be aware that snippets which lint clean in standard mode may now flag here (e.g., overrides without @override, third-party imports without stubs).
Pyright (in this mode) already surfaces the class of bugs we care about in documentation:
- Syntax errors — decorators on the wrong line,
def foo: missing parentheses, unbalanced brackets. (ast.parse catches these too, and we run it first so the error is clearer.)
- Dataclass default-ordering — "Fields without default values cannot appear after fields with default values."
Literal[...] with forbidden values — dicts, tuples of primitives, class objects.- Undefined names — a snippet that forgot to
import something or reference a name that isn't declared.
- Wrong argument counts and types on function/constructor calls.
- TypedDict misuse, bad
type X = ... aliases, malformed generics.
That's the whole universe of bugs we found in the recent python_examples PR review. ast.parse + pyright covers it without running a single line of snippet code.
How to run it
The skill ships a single orchestrator script. In almost every case, this is all you need:

What happens:
extract_snippets.py walks the file and yields every fenced block with (language, start_line, content).- For each Python block,
verify_python.py writes it to a temp file inside projects/python-project/ (so pyright picks up the project's pyrightconfig.json / pyproject.toml and the venv's installed packages), runs ast.parse, then runs uv run pyright --outputjson <temp>.
- Results are aggregated into:
<report-dir>/<input-stem>.report.md — one section per snippet, human-readable.<report-dir>/<input-stem>.report.json — structured, for downstream tooling.<report-dir>/<input-stem>.snippet-NN.<ext> — one file per fenced block (Python → .py, unlabeled → .txt, otherwise the language tag). The markdown report links to each one so you can open snippets directly in your editor for manual review.
- If
--out is omitted, all files are written into a per-run subdirectory of the language project — currently projects/python-project/reports/<timestamp>/. The timestamp format is YYYY-MM-DD_HHMMSS, so runs sort chronologically. Pass --out <dir> to write into a fixed directory instead (no timestamp subdir is added in that case).
The orchestrator returns exit code 0 if every snippet is clean, 1 if any snippet has errors, 2 if the skill itself failed to run (missing venv, etc.).

Always use this exact structure for the markdown report so downstream tooling and reviewers know what to expect:

How the pieces fit together
scripts/extract_snippets.py — pure extractor. Takes a markdown path, emits JSON to stdout. Uses a simple state machine over fences (``` and ~~~, respecting info strings and fence length per CommonMark) so it handles nested fences and indented fences. Importantly: it is language-agnostic and does no verification.scripts/verify_python.py — takes a single snippet (stdin or file) and runs ast.parse + pyright in the projects/python-project environment. Returns a JSON result for that snippet.scripts/verify_rust.py — same contract for Rust: writes the snippet as a bin target in projects/rust-project and runs cargo rustc with documentation-friendly -A lint overrides. Keeping extraction, per-language verification, and reporting in separate scripts means adding a new language later (e.g. verify_lean.py) doesn't require touching the other parts.
The snippet contract
Every fenced code block in a doc is one of three things. Keep each block clearly in one bucket so the report stays meaningful:
- A good example — complete, correct code illustrating a technique. It must pass the checker (
ok), and the surrounding prose must be accurate.
- A failure demo — intentionally broken code showing what the checker rejects. Mark it expect-error (see below); the checker must report an error, and with
--match-errors that error must match the description (expected_fail).
- A deliberate fragment — a snippet that is not meant to be a standalone program (a
... placeholder, a partial class, REPL output, or a "Bad: / Better:" pair shown side by side). Mark it ignore so the checker skips it (skipped).
Editorial rule: prefer self-contained snippets, but not at any cost. Default to a block that compiles on its own — add the imports and annotations, or split a side-by-side comparison into two blocks. When a snippet genuinely reads better as a fragment, mark it ignore rather than contorting it.
The ignore marker is a rustdoc-style fence attribute and works for every language, not just Rust. Put it after the language tag:

The first token (python) drives syntax highlighting; renderers drop the rest, so ignore is invisible on the rendered page. An ignored snippet is not checked at all, so a future break in it won't be caught — the right trade only for a true fragment.
The payoff: once every block is ok, an annotated demo, or ignored, any remaining fail is a genuine bug — which is the whole point of checking the docs.
Expected-error snippets
Documentation often contains intentionally broken code to demonstrate what a type checker would flag. There are two ways to mark such a snippet:
(a) Per-line # error: description comments — the common case. The comment doubles as documentation of what the type checker will say:

(b) A # expect-error keyword anywhere in the snippet body — for snippets where per-line annotations would be noisy or impossible (e.g., the failure is at module-import time, or the whole snippet is a counter-example):

The two mechanisms compose: a snippet with either signal is treated as expect-error. The rustdoc-style ```rust,compile_fail fence attribute also marks a snippet as expect-error.
The skill classifies snippets like this:

Two-phase verification
Phase 1 (always, deterministic): The scripts extract expect-error signals, run the per-language verifier, and classify snippets into the statuses above. This runs without any LLM. expected_fail entries show both the expected comments and actual errors side-by-side.
Phase 2 (opt-in, via --match-errors): For each expected_fail snippet, match_expected_errors.py calls claude -p to judge whether the expected comments and actual tool errors match semantically. This refines the status to:
expected_fail_matched — all expected comments correspond to an actual error. The snippet is a healthy intentional demo. ✅expected_fail_mismatched — actual errors exist but don't match what the comments describe. ❌ — exit code 1.expected_fail_partial — some comments match, others don't. ❌ — exit code 1.
Phase 2 updates both the markdown and JSON reports (the markdown report's per-snippet section will include the LLM's per-comment judgement with a short reason). Use --match-errors when you want the report to distinguish genuine intentional demos from stale or misleading error comments. Omit it for fast, offline runs where you just want the mechanical split.
The LLM prompt is tool-aware: when matching a Rust snippet, the prompt references rustc rather than pyright.
Detected comment patterns
The extractor scans each line for these regex patterns (case-insensitive):

A comment on a line whose comment-prefix already contains code (e.g.,
# bad_call() # error: … or // bad_call(); // error[E0382]: …) is
not treated as an expect-error signal. The checker never sees the
commented-out code, so the trailing annotation is teaching prose, not a
prediction about tool output. To mark a snippet as intentional fail when
the broken code is commented out, add # expect-error to the body.
Comments in markdown prose (outside fenced blocks) are not detected — they live in the markdown text, not in the code snippet.
Handling edge cases
Unlabeled fences. Report with status: "skipped" and language: null. Don't guess — false positives on language detection lead to confusing errors like "SyntaxError" on a snippet that was actually shell output. A one-line mention in the report is enough to prompt a fix.
Unsupported languages (bash, json, etc.). Same: skip with status: "skipped" and language: "<detected>", and add a note in the report that no verifier is wired up for this language yet. Do not error out — the skill should still produce a useful report for the supported snippets.
Snippets that reference names from earlier blocks in the same file. Each snippet is checked in isolation (per the user's decision). If a snippet uses Foo without defining or importing it, pyright will report "Foo is not defined" — and that's a legitimate finding: the snippet as written is not copy-pasteable. Don't try to be clever and stitch blocks together. The fix is to make the block self-contained (add the import/definition) or, if it is genuinely a fragment, mark its fence ignore (see "The snippet contract").
Fences tagged python that aren't Python. Sometimes authors use a ```python fence for rendered pyright/mypy output, tracebacks, or REPL sessions. These will fail parsing with confusing errors. The report entry will make the mismatch obvious (the snippet source is plainly not Python), and the fix is to retag the fence as ``` or ```text in the source document.
Pyright produces warnings but no errors. Treat only severity == "error" as a failing result. Include warnings in the report under a separate bullet, but they don't flip the status.
Python version. The projects/python-project/pyproject.toml pins requires-python = ">=3.14". That means newer features (PEP 695 type aliases, match statements, TypeVarTuple unpacking syntax) are available. Don't downgrade.
Pyright missing. If uv run pyright --version fails inside projects/python-project/, exit with code 2 and a clear message telling the user to run uv sync there. Don't silently fall back to syntax-only.
scala-cli missing. Scala verification needs scala-cli on PATH (brew install scala-cli). If it's absent, the snippet is reported as tool_error and the run exits with code 2 — same contract as a missing pyright. The first Scala run downloads the pinned compiler and dependencies, so it can take a couple of minutes; subsequent runs are a few seconds per snippet.
Hidden temp directories. When writing snippet temp files inside projects/python-project/, do not put them in a directory whose name starts with a dot (.snippet-tmp, .tmp, etc.). Pyright's default include set skips hidden directories and will silently analyze zero files — you'll get a false green for every snippet. Use snippet_tmp/ or similar. The skill's verify_python.py already does this; the warning is here so anyone extending the skill doesn't trip on it.
System Python version mismatch. The syntax check must run under the project's Python, not the system Python. On macOS, /usr/bin/python3 is commonly 3.9, which rejects match statements, PEP 695 type aliases, and other modern syntax that the Python 3.14 project happily accepts. verify_python.py delegates ast.parse to a subprocess run via uv run python for exactly this reason.
