1. Read the Component Source
Examine the component file at /packages/ui/src/[component-name].tsx:
- Structure: Is it a simple component or compound component?
- Exports: What named exports exist at the bottom of the file?
- CVA variants: What variants, sizes, and compound variants are defined?
- Props: What props does each component/sub-component accept?
- Base UI usage: What primitives from
@base-ui/react are used?
data-slot values: What slots are assigned to each part?
- Contexts: Does the compound component use a React context?
displayName: What display names are set?
2. Check Existing Stories
If updating, read the existing story file at /apps/storybook/stories/[component-name].stories.tsx to understand current coverage and patterns.
3. Cross-Reference Cursor Rules
Read these rule files to ensure your output follows conventions:

4. Verify Package Exports
Confirm the component has a subpath export in /packages/ui/package.json. If it's a new component, note that the export needs to be added.
Writing Style (Ultra-Concise)
- 80% code, 20% text — let code examples do the explaining
- Maximum 1-2 sentences per section if text is absolutely necessary
- No marketing language — remove "powerful", "flexible", "modern", "beautiful"
- No obvious explanations — don't explain what a button does

Verification Checklist
Before considering documentation complete:
Common Pitfalls
- Assuming component structure — always read the source first. Don't guess which compound parts exist.
- Wrong import paths — must be
@keystoneui/react/[component], not @keystoneui/react barrel import.
- Missing
as any on args — Storybook's type inference sometimes needs the cast on compound component stories.
- Forgetting play functions — at least the Default story should test basic interaction.
- Using Radix UI imports — Keystone UI uses
@base-ui/react, never @radix-ui.
- Verbose descriptions — keep component descriptions under 30 lines. No marketing speak.
- Hardcoded colors — use semantic tokens (
text-foreground, bg-muted) in className examples, not raw colors.
