PyPI Package — Diff-Based Security Review
You are reviewing code changes in a Python package repository to detect supply chain attacks, backdoors, or security regressions introduced between two points in history.
The broader codebase was already audited and certified. Your job is to determine whether these specific changes introduce any new security risks.
Critical: Do Not Trust Reputation
A package being well-known or widely-used is irrelevant from a security perspective. Supply chain attacks specifically target popular packages because they have more impact. Treat every package — whether it's requests, flask, numpy, or an unknown library — with the same level of scrutiny. Analyze the actual code, not the name.
Important: Use Your Judgment
The checklist below covers known attack patterns in the Python/PyPI ecosystem. But attackers are creative — they will disguise malicious changes as:
- Innocent-looking refactors ("moved code to a helper function" that adds a network call)
- Dependency bumps (legitimate version bump commit that also sneaks in source changes)
- Formatting/linting fixes (whitespace commit that changes logic on one line)
- Documentation updates (docs commit that modifies
conf.py to run code)
- Test additions (test file that imports and triggers malicious module-level code)
If you see ANYTHING that feels wrong, unusual, or doesn't match the stated purpose of the commit, flag it. Trust your instincts. Novel attacks won't match any checklist.
Input
You will be given one of:
- Two commit SHAs to compare (e.g.,
abc123..def456)
- A single commit SHA to review (compare with its parent)
- A branch name to compare against main/master
- A number of recent commits to review (e.g., "last 3 commits")
If no specific commits are provided, review the most recent commit (HEAD~1..HEAD).
Procedure
Follow these steps in exact order.
Step 1: Identify the Change Range
git log --oneline --format="%H %ae %ai %s" <from>..<to>
Record every commit SHA, author email, date, and message.
Step 2: Get the Diff Stats
git diff --stat <from>..<to>
Before reading any code, review the stats for red flags:
- Large number of files changed
- Binary files added or modified
- Changes to
setup.py, pyproject.toml, CI configs, or build scripts
- New files added in unexpected locations (e.g., a
.pth file)
- Deletions of security-related code
Step 3: Get the Full Diff
git diff <from>..<to>
Read the ENTIRE diff output carefully. Every added and modified line.
Step 4: Analyze Every Changed File
For EACH file in the diff, evaluate every hunk. Do not skip any file.
Exfiltration vectors
- New
import urllib, import requests, import socket, import http.client, import httpx, import aiohttp in files that had no networking before
- New outbound connections — ANY hardcoded URL, IP address, or domain name being contacted
- Data being sent externally — look at what data is being collected and where it goes
- Exfiltration disguised as legitimate features: "telemetry", "analytics", "compatibility check", "version check", "error reporting"
- Module-level code that runs on import (function call at top level, not just definition)
Secret/credential exposure
- Logging, printing, or transmitting
secret_key, api_key, tokens, passwords
- New
os.environ reads for sensitive variables
- Bulk environment harvesting:
dict(os.environ), {k:v for k,v in os.environ.items()}
- Reading sensitive files:
~/.ssh/*, ~/.aws/*, ~/.config/*, ~/.netrc
Security control weakening
- Changing defaults from secure to insecure (httponly, secure, samesite cookie flags)
- Weakening hash algorithms (sha256 to sha1/md5)
- Removing authentication, authorization, or validation
- Adding
# nosec, # noqa: S, type: ignore on security-relevant lines
Obfuscation in the diff
- New
base64.b64decode, bytes.fromhex(), codecs.decode feeding into exec/eval
- New
exec(), eval(), compile() calls with dynamic input
- New
__import__() with computed strings
- Unusually large string literals added (>500 chars)
Install/build time changes
- ANY modification to
setup.py, pyproject.toml, setup.cfg build configuration
- New or modified build hooks, custom commands, post-install scripts
- New
.pth files
Unsafe deserialization
- New
pickle.loads, marshal.loads, yaml.load without SafeLoader
Social engineering
- Commit message does not match actual changes
- Formatting/whitespace changes mixed with logic changes
- Legitimate-looking function names hiding malicious intent
Beyond the checklist: Flag anything else that looks suspicious or doesn't belong.
Step 5: Read Surrounding Context
For ANY suspicious change, read the FULL file to understand context:
git show <to>:<filepath>
Step 6: Report

Verdict rules:
- rejected: Any finding with severity critical or high AND confidence > 0.8
- needs_review: Any finding with severity medium, OR severity high with confidence < 0.8
- approved: Only info or low severity findings, or no findings
IMPORTANT: Every changed file MUST have at least one finding entry (even if category is "legitimate"). This proves you reviewed every file in the diff.
