Load when the MainAgent is assembling a comparison report across multiple narrative-direction explorations (results from parallel/sequential task(explorer) calls). Use to compare directions along narrative, character, cost, and reader-promise dimensions. "Branches" here means narrative branches — this is NOT a git branch tool.
Plan and track a character's long-term transformation arc, ensuring each action reflects their current stage of change.
Check physical, social, and psychological plausibility in fiction scenes.
Load when WriterAgent finishes a chapter draft or is planning a chapter that should set up later payoffs. Use to embed plant-able details (objects, gestures, line drops) for ch+2 or later, and to verify earlier plants get acknowledged. Skip for the very first chapter (no prior plants exist) and for pure dialogue scenes with no narrative scaffolding.
Plan or draft scenes where rhythm, tension, and momentum matter by balancing escalation and release.

Read this skill when a character feels flat, predictable, or underused, or when looking for dimensions to develop.
A flat character is not one without enough backstory or enough scenes. They are one whose inner life is not in tension with their outer actions. They do what their situation requires and feel what their situation suggests. They have no private logic the reader is learning to understand.
The character's potential is already in their existing design. It has not been excavated yet.
In the gap between stated motivation and actual behavior: if a character says they want one thing and consistently acts toward it without complication, there is no depth. Potential lives in the moments their behavior doesn't follow their stated motivation—what does that reveal about what they actually want?
In their relationship to other characters: every significant relationship creates a different version of the character. The person this character is with A is not the person they are with B. If they seem identical across relationships, the relationships are not doing character work.
In their specific weakness: not a general flaw, but the specific form this character's damage takes. Not "afraid of abandonment" but "becomes controlling precisely when the person they love starts to trust them—because intimacy is the thing that has always ended." Potential lives in the precision of the damage.
In their false belief under pressure: the false belief is not always visible in comfortable circumstances. It surfaces when the character is forced to choose under cost. Potential lives in scenes that have not yet put enough pressure on this belief to make it act.

The dimension with the most potential is usually the one most avoided—either because it is uncomfortable, or because the story has been managing the character rather than letting them fail.
