AI-Assisted Social Engineering

First Principle

AI does not create new social engineering goals — it eliminates the skill, time, and scale constraints that previously limited their execution.

Spearphishing historically required attacker research, writing skill, and manual effort. Voice cloning required audio engineering expertise. Synthetic identity fraud required access to stolen documents and creative skills. AI reduces all of these to API calls. The attacks themselves are not new; the barrier to executing them at scale, with high personalization, and against targets who previously would have been too resource-intensive to attack — that is what AI changes.

Attack Mental Model

1. AI-personalized spearphishing — an attacker uses LLMs to generate highly personalized phishing emails using publicly available information (LinkedIn profiles, company news, GitHub commits). Each email is unique, passes spam filters, and references specific real details about the target.
2. Voice cloning impersonation — using 5–30 seconds of audio from a public interview, podcast, or voicemail, an attacker clones an executive's voice and places a phone call to an employee requesting an urgent wire transfer or credential reset.
3. Synthetic identity creation — AI generates a complete synthetic identity (photo, work history, social media presence, writing style) used to establish a false relationship with a target organization before executing an attack.
4. Deepfake video for executive fraud — a short-notice video call with a "CFO" deepfake convinces an employee to approve a financial transaction. The video quality is sufficient for a grainy video call context.

Validate	High-risk requests (financial transfers, credential resets, access grants) are authenticated through a pre-established out-of-band channel — not through the channel the request arrived on.

ASE.1 AI Impersonation Detection and Verification Protocols

The core vulnerability: Employees trained to detect phishing based on grammatical errors, generic greetings, and suspicious links are not prepared for AI-personalized attacks that contain accurate personal details, perfect grammar, and a plausible pretext.

High-Risk Request Verification Protocol:
1. Any request for: financial transfer > $X, credential reset for privileged account, 
   access grant to sensitive system, or data export
2. REGARDLESS of how it was received (email, phone, video call, chat)
3. STOP — do not act immediately even if the request appears urgent
4. Verify by calling the requester at their pre-stored directory number (not a number in the message)
5. Use the established verification code if one is in place
6. If you cannot verify in 10 minutes, escalate to your manager before acting

• Establish executive "safe word" protocols. For C-level executives and Finance staff most targeted by voice cloning and BEC, establish a rotating shared phrase known only to the individual and their PA or direct reports. A legitimate urgent call from that person includes the phrase; a cloned voice cannot.
• Train employees to recognize AI-attack patterns. The signal is no longer poor grammar — it is: extreme personalization, unexpected urgency, pressure to bypass normal process, requests that arrive through a non-standard channel, and emotional pressure. Update security training to focus on these signals.

Failure Modes

• An employee receives a video call from the "CFO" (deepfake quality sufficient for a compressed video call) asking for an urgent vendor payment before end of day. The employee, trained to verify emails but not video calls, approves the payment.
• A spearphishing email references the target's recent conference presentation by title, mentions a colleague's name correctly, and uses the company's internal vocabulary. The employee assumes it must be legitimate because of the accuracy of details.

ASE.2 Synthetic Identity and AI Reconnaissance Defense

The core vulnerability: Organizations that engage with external partners, vendors, job applicants, and consultants are exposed to synthetic identity infiltration. An AI-generated persona that passes a video interview can gain access to systems, data, or insider knowledge for later exploitation.

• Are identity verification processes for contractors, vendors, and new employees capable of detecting AI-generated identity documents and synthetic profile artifacts?
• Is there a monitoring process for detecting AI-generated social media profiles or synthetic identities in professional networks that target your organization's employees?
• Do hiring processes include identity verification steps that are resistant to deepfake video interviews?

• Implement liveness detection and identity binding in remote identity verification:

1. Government ID verification with NFC chip reading (not OCR of uploaded photo)
2. Liveness check: real-time challenge-response (look left, blink) via verified video platform
3. Cross-reference: name + ID against background check service
4. Video interview: require random head-movement challenges during call
5. Reference check via independently verified contact information (not provided by candidate)

• Monitor for synthetic account patterns targeting your organization. Look for LinkedIn or professional network profiles that: were created recently, have AI-typical profile photo characteristics (hyperreal skin texture, symmetric background artifacts), have connection histories inconsistent with claimed experience, or request connections to multiple employees in a short window.
• Establish an AI-assisted attack reporting channel. Employees who suspect they received an AI-personalized attack or were contacted by a synthetic identity should have a low-friction way to report it. These reports are threat intelligence for improving defenses.
