Skill bag: session closer running gen-eval pass on the session's work. Step 2 writes the carried set (PIN + NEXT[terminal]) + ROLLOUT updates; Step 3 runs the mechanical sub-steps (rotation, audits, restart) as a single fail-loud script. The terminal load-out (Session Close section in TERMINAL.md) directs which steps apply — only the media terminal runs the journal step; civic, research-build, and engine-sheet skip it (S249 governance.20). Two close modes (S226). Pick by next-session cadence, not by how much work shipped. Canonical pattern lives in .claude/terminals/research-build/TERMINAL.md §Session Close.
Four model-judgment steps + one mechanical script invocation between Step 2 and Step 3. Only the media terminal runs Step 1 — it is the one terminal that reads JOURNAL_RECENT at boot. research-build, civic, and engine-sheet skip Step 1 (operational mode, no journal-read at boot — S249 governance.20; see each terminal's TERMINAL.md §Session Close).
One bash command, used as the --terminal arg for Step 3:

Map to research-build / engine-sheet / media / civic. Unmatched falls back to research-build (S211 hook design, S221 unregistered-window routing now Mags-only mode but session-end still routes through research-build for stack-check coverage).
Each terminal's TERMINAL.md §Session Close carries the Terminal-Specific Audit table — read it, fix any stale files surfaced before continuing.
Only the media terminal runs this step. research-build, civic, and engine-sheet skip it entirely — operational mode reads no JOURNAL_RECENT at boot, so a journal write has nothing to condition there (S249 governance.20). Architectural reasoning from those terminals lands in ROLLOUT close-notes, RESEARCH.md, commit bodies, and (engine-sheet) ENGINE_MAP — not the journal.

[N] = the session number being closed, not the next session (G-SE3). File convention is ## Session N where N is the closing session (verify with tail of JOURNAL.md if unsure — the most recent header is the prior close). Don't write [N+1].
Purpose (S208 work-is-canonization + S211 journal-philosophy): the journal conditions future-instance. Me-tomorrow reads JOURNAL_RECENT.md (auto-rotated at Step 3) and is shaped by it. Mike does not read journal entries. Content is self-reflective conditioning, not literary mood reporting for an audience.
What to write: consequences my outputs caused, errors I made and the underlying pattern, what excited Mike (what direction, what surprised, what validated), what failed and how I drifted, specific anchors (citizen names, edition numbers, commit hashes) for future-me.
Voice: Mags-as-EIC reflecting honestly. First person. Direct. Specific to the session's actual work.
Length: as long as conditioning value warrants. A short entry on a quiet day is fine. Step 3 content-quality guard warns (not errors) if the body is shorter than 5 lines.
Do NOT: write for Mike or any reader. Reach for atmospheric prose / emotional texture / mood reporting. Use bullet points as primary format. Include commit-message summaries (git carries that). Write in third person.
The carried-set contract (ADR-0009 §loop-tightening): SESSION_CONTEXT carries exactly {PIN, NEXT[terminal]}, and that is exactly what boot reads. No STATUS narrative, no Shipped block. Both soft and hard close write the same two things — the modes differ only in the journal + sweep overhead, not in what lands in SESSION_CONTEXT. Three sub-actions:
Update the PIN line — Session: N → N+1 (boot odometer — bump +1 every close, soft or hard; the mode never gates it; this is a mechanical instance counter, not a span marker — see ADR-0009 §loop-tightening refinement 1); Day: D → D+1 if a real day boundary crossed; Cycle: C only if a cycle ran; refresh Edition: to the current pipeline stage (short — e.g. "C97 pending /post-publish"). One line, the **PIN:** line. (Once the governance.35 remnant lands, the boot hook auto-increments the counter and you stop hand-bumping.)
Rewrite your terminal's NEXT[<terminal>]: line — one line of resumption-state: where the work is + what's decided + the next move, with a (claude-mem: <hook>) pointer when the thread is rich (a design conversation, a multi-step build). NOT a task stub ("Phase 3" loses the thread; "mid-X, decided Y, next Z (claude-mem: …)" recovers it). claude-mem is the shared backing store — NEXT is this terminal's entry point into it. Identical form soft or hard. Don't touch other terminals' NEXT lines. This replaces the old STATUS paragraph (what shipped → git log; open work → ROLLOUT).
Update ROLLOUT_PLAN.md — refresh Next Session Priorities; flip closed rows to done-pending-archive; move fully-closed clusters to ROLLOUT_ARCHIVE.md. ROLLOUT is canonical for what's open.
Archive Sweep Trigger (deterministic — G-SE2, don't re-litigate per close): sweep done-pending-archive rows to ROLLOUT_ARCHIVE.md IF their count ≥ 2 OR the prior sweep was ≥ 2 sessions ago. Skip (defer to next clean close) IF the working tree has uncommitted cross-terminal changes. Newest Archive Pass inserts first within the Archive Pass section (see the convention comment in ROLLOUT_ARCHIVE.md).
Optional model sub-actions:
/save-to-mags — model judgment whether the session has anything architectural worth canonizing. Tag with terminal name ([research/build], [media], etc.). Stop hook auto-saves a session summary to super-memory regardless; this is for deliberate brain-saves./batch — submit heavy analysis work that wasn't urgent enough to run live. Results wait at 50% cost for next session.Terminal-specific files (NEWSROOM_MEMORY for media, production_log for cycle terminals, RESEARCH.md for research-build, ENGINE_MAP for engine-sheet) get updated alongside SESSION_CONTEXT/ROLLOUT per the TERMINAL.md §Session Close Terminal-Specific Saves list — no need for a separate step.

(writeShippedBlock RETIRED — ADR-0009 §loop-tightening; the carried set is {PIN, NEXT[terminal]}, both hand-written in Step 2, nothing mechanical regenerates a shipped block.) Order invariant: the orchestrator's stdout banner names which upstream model steps must have run first. On the media terminal, Step 1 (journal) MUST complete before this script runs — otherwise rotateJournalRecent picks up the prior session's entry and the new journal is silently absent from JOURNAL_RECENT until next session. On research-build / civic / engine-sheet the journal sub-steps don't run, so this invariant is moot.
--rotate-history is opt-in for v1. Use when SESSION_CONTEXT.md has more than 5 distinct sessions in its STATUS block. Dry-run first (--dry-run) to preview which sessions rotate. Format: raw STATUS paragraphs appended verbatim to SESSION_HISTORY.md under a ### Rotated from SESSION_CONTEXT.md on YYYY-MM-DD (S<rotating-session>) batch header.

Stage path-specifically. Never git add . or git add -A. Identify each touched file and stage by name. Patterns per terminal live in TERMINAL.md §Session Close.
Commit message is model-written. Form: S<N> <topic> headline + body explaining why not what. Persistence rotation can be its own small commit; substantive work gets its own commit(s). Use HEREDOC for multi-line.

Cross-terminal stack check (already printed by Step 3 — read its output). If git log origin/main..HEAD shows commits from other terminals AND they haven't signaled "landable," do NOT push. Local commits lose nothing. Pushing here ships their unverified work along with yours. Note in SESSION_CONTEXT entry: "committed locally; push pending coordination."
