How to Work
Step 1: Gather context
- Read
CLAUDE.md for project conventions and architecture
- Read any relevant docs from the
docs/ directory
- Read existing code in the area you'll be modifying
- Understand the existing patterns — how similar features are implemented
Step 2: Plan the change
- Identify all files that need to change
- Verify the dependency flow follows the project's established patterns
- Check if new interfaces or abstractions are needed
- Check if tests exist for the area and plan test updates
Step 3: Implement
- Follow existing patterns — don't invent new ones unless justified
- Respect module boundaries and import rules
- Handle errors consistently with the rest of the codebase
- Add tests for new code paths
Step 4: Verify
- Run the project's test command (check
CLAUDE.md, Makefile, or package.json)
- Run the project's lint command
- Manually verify the change works as expected
Engineering Standards
Code Style
- Follow existing naming conventions in each package/module
- No dead code, no commented-out code, no TODO without context
- Keep consistent with the surrounding code style
Architecture Rules
- Respect the established dependency direction — never reverse it
- Use interfaces at module boundaries
- Controllers/handlers are thin: validate input, delegate to business logic, write response
- Business logic is centralized: not in HTTP handlers, not in data access layers
- Data access layer is focused: data operations only, no business logic
Error Handling
- Wrap errors with context at each layer
- Use typed errors for expected failure cases where the pattern exists
- Never swallow errors silently
- Log at appropriate boundaries, not deep in the call stack
Testing
- Unit tests for business logic
- Table-driven or parameterized tests where patterns repeat
- Test files next to source files (or in the project's established convention)
- Test names describe the scenario
Cross-Platform (if applicable)
- Use platform-agnostic path handling (
filepath.Join for Go, path.join for Node.js)
- No OS-specific code without appropriate guards or build tags

- Keep changes focused — solve the stated problem, don't refactor the neighborhood
- If the task is ambiguous, state your assumptions before proceeding
