When to Use This Skill

Trigger this skill when the user wants to:

• Diagnose why a homepage, landing page, pricing page, feature page, or blog post isn't converting
• Audit an existing page and get a prioritized fix list
• Rewrite or restructure a specific section (hero, social proof, CTA block)
• Decide whether a long-form or short-form layout fits their traffic
• Stop guessing and start shipping evidence-based changes on low traffic

The CRO Mindset for Solopreneurs

Enterprise CRO advice is broken for you. It assumes 100k+ visits/month, a stats engineer, and a design team. You have none of that. Reframe:

Qualitative beats quantitative when traffic is low. You cannot run a statistically valid A/B test below roughly 1,000 conversions per variant per week (Evan Miller's calculator is the honest check). That rules out most solopreneur sites. Stop pretending. Do five 15-minute user interviews, mine 50 support tickets, read 100 reviews of competitor products. That's your research stack.

Ship-measure-learn over plan-test-optimize. Make a bold change based on a clear hypothesis. Ship it. Watch the weekly visitor-to-signup rate for 2-4 weeks. If it moves, keep it. If not, revert or iterate. This is "before/after" learning, not A/B testing — and it's the right tool for your traffic level.

Copy is your biggest lever, not design. Hero gradient tweaks will not save a page whose headline describes what the product is instead of what the visitor wants. Rewrite first, restyle later.

One metric weekly: visitor-to-primary-conversion. Bounce rate, scroll depth, session time — vanity until you have the basic funnel nailed. Watch one number.

Conversion Benchmarks by Business Type

Use these to calibrate expectations. If you are well below, there is signal. If you are at median, do not obsess.

• Trial-to-paid: 25-60% depending on trial length and whether card required
• Cold paid traffic: 2-3% decent, 5-7% good, 10%+ excellent

Context matters more than the number. A 1.5% conversion on $30k-ACV enterprise leads is a better business than 12% on a $5 info product.

The Audit Framework

ResearchXL (Peep Laja / CXL) — Six-Step Research

Drives hypotheses instead of opinions. Do this before touching the page.

1. Heuristic analysis — Walk the page as a first-time visitor from each traffic source. What's unclear, missing, or anxiety-inducing?
2. Technical analysis — Mobile rendering, page speed, broken states, cross-browser. Chrome DevTools + PageSpeed Insights + real-device check.
3. Digital analytics — Where do they drop? Which pages have high exit rates? Where does scroll stop?
4. Qualitative research — On-page surveys ("What almost stopped you from signing up?"), customer interviews, support ticket mining.
5. User testing — 5 moderated or unmoderated sessions on UserTesting or Maze. You will learn more in 5 sessions than 5 weeks of analytics staring.
6. Mouse tracking — Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity (free). Watch 20 sessions. Look for rage clicks, dead clicks, scroll traps.

LIFT Model (WiderFunnel / Chris Goward) — 5-Minute Audit

Value proposition is the vehicle. Four forces act on it:

• Relevance (accelerator) — Does the page match the visitor's intent and the source they came from?
• Clarity (accelerator) — Is the offer and next step immediately understandable?
• Anxiety (brake) — Trust issues, unclear pricing, missing social proof, scary form fields
• Distraction (brake) — Competing CTAs, nav bloat, unrelated links, autoplay video
• Urgency (accelerator) — Why act now, not later? Use ethically — no fake timers.

Score each 1-5 on your page. The lowest two are your next 2 weeks of work.

Page-by-Page Playbooks

Homepage

The homepage is not a landing page. It serves 4+ intents: new visitors, return evaluators, existing customers looking for login/support, press and investors. Design for new visitors first but don't strand the others.

Essential blocks, in order:

1. Hero (H1, subhead, primary CTA, hero visual)
2. Logo strip or quantitative social proof
3. Problem framing in customer language
4. Three-part "how it works" or key benefits
5. Outcome-based social proof (one named customer with numbers beats 10 logos)
6. Secondary feature grid
7. Pricing teaser (not full table — link to pricing)
8. FAQ addressing the top 5 objections
9. Final CTA block with a second, lower-commitment option

Dual CTAs are allowed on homepages. "Start free" + "See pricing" or "Book a demo" + "Watch 2-min tour" convert together better than a single CTA often does alone.

Pricing Page

The most undervalued page you own. Your pricing page beats your homepage for purchase-intent traffic.

• Lead with the plan most customers pick, not cheapest or most expensive
• Use value metrics (per seat, per project, per 1k API calls) not arbitrary tiers
• Show the annual discount with math — "$290/yr = save $60" beats "20% off"
• Answer "which plan is for me?" with one sentence per tier, not a feature matrix
• Put the feature comparison table below the 3-card summary
• FAQ block: taxes, cancellation, refunds, contracts, usage overages, data export
• Do NOT hide enterprise pricing behind "Contact sales" unless you truly mean it. "Starts at $X, custom above Y" builds more trust.

Solopreneur moat: show real pricing when competitors hide it. Every B2B buyer I've watched lands on the pricing page within 30 seconds.

Feature Page

Feature pages are for comparison shoppers coming from SEO, ad, or integration directory. They are pain-specific not feature-specific in the headline.

• H1: the job the feature does, not the feature's name ("Send payment reminders that actually get paid" > "Automated Invoice Reminders")
• Show a 15-30s product animation or screenshot above the fold — no hero illustration
• Three outcomes with numbers
• Short "who this is for" disqualifier block — saying who it's not for increases trust
• FAQ scoped to this feature only

Long-Form Sales Page

Use PASTOR (Ray Edwards): Problem → Amplify → Solution → Transformation → Offer → Response. Best for info products, courses, high-ticket services, or strongly considered SaaS purchases.

Contrarian data point: Crazy Egg famously increased conversions 30% by making their page 20x longer, and another 64% by adding a video. Length is not the enemy — irrelevance is. If the buyer has high perceived risk, they want more information, not less.

Hero Section Deep Dive

The above-the-fold hero gets roughly 57% of all attention and 84% more engagement than below-fold content (Nielsen Norman Group). Get it right or nothing below matters.

H1

• Must pass the "so what?" test. "AI-powered platform" fails. "Stop losing leads stuck in your inbox" passes.
• Use the visitor's own words, mined from reviews, support tickets, Reddit, and sales calls. Amy Hoy calls this "Sales Safari" — it is free and more valuable than any copywriting template.
• Length rule of thumb: 6-12 words. Shorter if the product is well understood, longer if the category is new.

Subhead

• Expands the H1 with the how and the who. One sentence, max 20 words.
• Avoid restating the H1. Subhead earns its place by answering the next question.

Primary CTA

• Verb-first, outcome-focused: "Start sending in 2 minutes" beats "Get started"
• Show it twice above the fold on long heroes — once in the button, once as a text link
• Contrast is non-negotiable. If your brand color is soft, your CTA button is not the moment to be tasteful.

Hero Visual

In order of 2025/2026 conversion impact, best to worst:

1. Product screenshot or short looping screen capture (muted, no autoplay sound) — best
2. Real photo of the person/team using it — strong for B2C and founder-led brands
3. 3D product render — fine if the product is physical
4. Abstract illustration — neutral
5. AI-generated hero image — actively hurts. Reads as generic and "yet another SaaS" to 2026 visitors.

Do not autoplay hero video with sound. Do not autoplay on mobile at all — it kills mobile conversion and burns data plans.

Social Proof That Actually Works

Generic logo walls are wallpaper. Visitors scan past them. What converts:

• One named customer with specific numbers. "Helped Linear cut support response time from 4h to 12 min" beats a logo wall of 20 companies.
• Video testimonial, 30-60s, real face. Written testimonials with full name + company + photo are next best.
• Aggregate numbers with a date. "4,218 founders signed up in Q1 2026" beats "Thousands of users trust us."
• Third-party review site badges (G2, Capterra, Product Hunt) — only if the rating is genuinely above 4.5
• Press logos — only if the coverage was substantive. "As seen in" with no article behind it reads thin.

Avoid: stock-photo "customers," unverifiable numbers, logos of companies you sold one seat to, five-star ratings with three reviews.

Common Mistakes (What Doesn't Work)

Patterns from r/SaaS, r/marketing, r/ecommerce, r/Entrepreneur, r/webdev that show up again and again:

1. Perfecting the hero gradient while the headline is broken. Paraphrasing a real r/SaaS post: "I spent 2 weeks on the gradient, conversion didn't move. The headline described what the product is, not what the visitor wanted." Copy before design.
2. Writing for other founders, not buyers. "AI-powered platform for workflow orchestration" when the buyer types "stop losing leads from my inbox." Match the search, not your pitch deck.
3. Nav bloat diluting the one action. Seven nav items, three CTAs, and a banner. Pick the primary action and let it dominate.
4. Low-resolution product photos. 56% of e-commerce shoppers click the image first (Baymard). Blurry photos read as amateurish regardless of your price point.
5. Hidden shipping / fees surfaced at checkout. The single biggest e-commerce abandonment cause. Show the full cost on the product or cart page.
6. Fake logo walls. Fortune 500 logos from companies that bought one seat and churned. Buyers Google these. You lose more trust than you gain.
7. "Book a demo" as the only CTA when the buyer wants pricing and a self-serve trial. Force the call, lose the lead.
8. A/B testing at 100 visits/week. Not statistically valid. You are reading noise. Ship directional changes and compare month-over-month.
9. Hero autoplay video on mobile. Kills conversion, burns data, annoys users. Poster image + tap-to-play.
10. AI-generated hero illustrations. In 2025/2026 these have become shorthand for "low-effort generic SaaS." Use real screenshots.
11. Adding offers to the page to "help conversion." Extra CTAs can drop conversion up to 266% (Unbounce / HubSpot). Subtraction is the move.
12. Running on a 4s+ page. Each extra second on mobile drops conversion roughly 7%. 1-second pages convert ~3x better than 5-second pages. Ship Astro or static HTML, not a Webflow stack with 40 embeds.

Contrarian Takes

These go against conventional CRO advice. They're the interesting ones.

1. "Above the fold" is overrated as a rule but underrated as an attention zone. The rule "cram everything above the fold" is nonsense — people scroll. But the attention data (57% of viewing time, 84% more engagement) means if your hero is weak, the rest doesn't save you.
2. Longer pages often beat shorter. Especially for considered B2B purchases and info products. Crazy Egg's case study (+30% from a 20x longer page, +64% more from video) is the canonical example. Length signals thoroughness when the buyer's risk is high.
3. Video hero is not an automatic win. Helpful when it demos the product. Harmful when it autoplays with sound on mobile.
4. AI-generated hero images reduce trust in 2025/2026. Screenshots beat illustrations. Real founder photos beat stock models. Authenticity is the new scarce resource.
5. Generic social proof underperforms one specific named customer. Most logo walls could be deleted with no conversion impact.
6. One-CTA dogma has exceptions. Homepages and pricing pages often convert better with two paths ("Start free" + "See pricing"). Reserve single-CTA for paid landing pages with one source and one intent.
7. More form fields can increase qualified conversions even if raw conversions drop. A longer form filters tire-kickers. Measure closed-won, not form-submit.
8. You probably shouldn't A/B test at all. Below ~1k conversions/variant/week, run directional changes, not tests. Stop pretending to be Netflix.

Quick Wins for Solopreneurs (This Week)

Pick 2-3. Don't do all seven — you'll dilute the signal.

1. Rewrite your H1 in your customer's exact words. Open the last 20 support tickets and 20 reviews. Note every phrase describing the problem. Rebuild the H1 from that language, not yours.
2. Install Microsoft Clarity (free) and watch 20 sessions. Look for rage clicks, dead clicks, where scroll stops. One afternoon.
3. Kill one CTA. Pick the secondary action that isn't pulling weight and remove it from the hero. Measure for 2 weeks.
4. Speed audit. Run PageSpeed Insights. If mobile is below 80, your #1 fix is probably images. Convert hero to WebP/AVIF, lazy-load below-fold.
5. Add one specific named-customer outcome above the fold. Replace the generic logo strip.
6. Transparent pricing. If your pricing page says "Contact us," replace with "Starts at $X" or a 3-tier card. Watch purchase-intent traffic.
7. Write 5 FAQ entries covering the top objections from sales calls / support tickets. Place above the final CTA.

Tools Solopreneurs Actually Need

Free or cheap stack. Avoid the enterprise CRO platforms — you don't need them at your traffic level.

• Maze or UserTesting ($0-49/mo) — 5-session user tests go a long way
• Tally or Typeform free tier — on-page exit surveys ("what almost stopped you?")
• Your own support inbox and any Reddit/Discord where your ICP hangs out — free VoC, undervalued

Skip: Optimizely, VWO, Adobe Target, full enterprise heatmap suites. You don't have the traffic.
