Music Distribution Strategy
Getting music heard is a distribution problem, not a quality problem. Most independent artists make the mistake of releasing music and waiting for it to be discovered. This skill is about actively placing your music where people are already looking, using the same tools and data sources that marketing teams use for products.
These tactics work for AI-generated music and traditionally produced music. The distribution problem is identical.
Tactic 1 — Name songs around trending keywords
Most artists name songs based on what the song means to them. A smarter approach is to name songs around what people are actively searching for, the same way a blog post or YouTube video targets a search query.
Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music all use search in the same way Google does. If someone searches "sad piano instrumental" and your song is called "sad piano instrumental," you have a chance of appearing. If your song is called "Echoes of Yesterday," you have almost no chance unless you already have a large audience.
How to find the right keywords:
Go to trends.google.com and explore what people are searching for in your genre and region. Look for topics with upward momentum — things that have been flat for months and are now spiking. A spike means new people are searching, which means competition is lower relative to search volume.
Filter by region to find where interest is concentrated. If you are making Spanish-language music, check Mexico, Colombia, and the US separately — trending topics vary significantly by country.
Set the time range to the past 90 days and look for things going up and to the right. Anything that has gone parabolic in the last two weeks is worth moving on immediately because the window closes fast.
Name your songs, albums, and playlists around the terms you find. You do not have to make the song literally about the trending topic — instrumental music especially can carry almost any title. The title is the search surface, the music is the product.
Long-form ambient and study music is a specific opportunity worth noting. Searches for things like "jazz study music," "lofi for focus," "piano cafe ambience," and similar terms are consistently high and growing. These long-form YouTube videos — sometimes 3 to 11 hours — get millions of views because people put them on and leave them running. The barrier to production is low: generate a set of instrumental tracks in Suno, sequence them in your video editor, add a static or slowly moving visual, and upload. Monetize through YouTube ads once you hit the threshold, and use it to drive listeners back to your Spotify profile.
Tactic 2 — Trojan horse playlists
This tactic works by placing your music inside playlists that people are already searching for and listening to.
Create playlists on Spotify named after popular artists in your genre. The first few songs in the playlist should be by that popular artist — real, recognizable tracks that match what someone searching that playlist expects to find. Then distribute your own songs throughout the rest of the playlist.
When someone searches for "Bad Bunny playlist" and finds yours, they start listening for the familiar songs and keep listening as your tracks come up in the mix. If your music fits the vibe, they will not skip it. Some of them will save it.
Run this as a test. Create one playlist that is 100% your songs. Create another that is 10% your songs mixed with popular artists. Track which drives more saves and follows over 30 days. The ratio that works will depend on your genre and how well your production matches the artists you are mixing in with.
This already works — if you look at your saved playlists on Spotify you will find independent artists doing this. It is not a secret tactic, it is just underused.
Tactic 3 — Radio station outreach via agent
Radio stations, particularly in Latin America and regional US markets, are more reachable than most artists assume. They receive fewer emails than you would think from independent artists, and they are genuinely looking for new music that fits their format.
The workflow is to scrape a database of radio station email addresses, then run a slow, personalized outreach campaign.
Building the database:
Open a ChatGPT agent session (or Claude with computer use) and give it this type of prompt:
"Find every radio station in [target region] that plays [genre] music. For each one, find the music director's name if possible, the station's contact email, the city, and a link to their website. Return this as a CSV."
The agent will browse the web and compile the list. Review and clean it — remove stations that are clearly the wrong format, and flag any where you found a specific music director contact rather than a generic inbox.
Running the outreach:
Do not mass email this list all at once. Sending hundreds of cold emails from a single address will hurt your deliverability and get you flagged as spam. Send two to four emails per day from the address you plan to use for music business communications.
Keep the email short. Introduce yourself in one sentence. Say what your music sounds like in one sentence. Attach or link your best song. Ask if they would listen. That is the entire email. No long pitch, no life story.
If you have a specific connection to the region — you grew up there, the music draws from that culture, you have listeners there already — mention it briefly. Authenticity is the difference between an email that gets read and one that gets deleted.
The goal is not a yes on the first email. The goal is to get on their radar so that when you follow up in three weeks with a new release, they already know who you are.
Tactic 4 — Trend-reactive music videos
When something goes viral, there is a 24 to 72 hour window where content about that topic will get outsized distribution because platforms are actively surfacing it. Making a song or music video that references a trending person, event, or moment during that window puts you in front of an audience that is already primed to engage.
This does not mean making low-quality content just to chase trends. It means having a fast production workflow so that when something relevant to your style breaks through, you can produce something genuine within a day.
The combination of a recognizable name or topic in the title, a well-produced visual, and a short-form clip cut from it gives the content multiple surfaces to distribute: the short-form clip on TikTok and Reels drives people to the full video on YouTube, which drives people to the song on Spotify.
Keep the visual style consistent with your brand so that new viewers who come for the trending topic understand what you are about and have a reason to follow.
