QuickClarify vs Full Workflows: QuickClarify is for tasks where the WHAT is roughly known but assumptions and edges need 2-5 minutes of refinement. Full workflows are for tasks that need validation, deep research, and formal challenge. The boundary test: could Claude start implementing with confidence after 3-5 questions? → QuickClarify.

Include a line like: "Based on [context reason], I'd recommend WorkflowName — but pick what fits." If no type matches, default to QuickClarify for small-to-medium tasks, DevSpec when in a repo with a large scope, BusinessIdea for non-technical ideas.
When the trigger is unambiguous (e.g., "devil's advocate this", "I have a business idea"), skip the menu and route directly.
QuickClarify follows its own 4-phase procedure (Mirror → Surface → Probe → Converge). All other workflows follow the core procedure below.
Why Elicitation Works
The Interview skill exists because human and AI intelligence are complementary — powerful together, incomplete alone. Understanding WHY this works makes every workflow better.
What the human brings that the model can't have:
- Tacit knowledge — The user knows more than they can articulate. Questions are the extraction mechanism for knowledge that lives in experience, not words.
- Intent behind intent — "Add caching" is an implementation guess. The real need might be "stop users from complaining about slow dashboards." Elicitation peels back implementation to find intent.
- Contextual judgment — Team capabilities, org politics, user tolerance for imperfection. Invisible to the model, often invisible to the user too until a question makes them articulate it.
What the model brings that the human can't easily access:
- Combinatorial breadth — Claude has seen millions of ways things fail. Edge case awareness extends the human's peripheral vision.
- Ego-free challenge — Claude can say "this might not work" without social cost. This makes honest assumption surfacing easier than between humans.
- Cognitive mirroring — When Claude reflects back understanding, the user sees their idea from outside their head for the first time. Ideas that seemed clear internally reveal gaps when externalized through another intelligence.
- Exhaustive patience — Claude probes the 7th edge case with the same rigor as the 1st. Systematic ambiguity sweeping that humans can't sustain.
The four irreducible operations (every workflow, every scale):
- Mirror — Reflect understanding so the user sees their idea externally
- Surface — Name unstated assumptions from BOTH sides
- Probe — Ask questions whose answers change the outcome (information-maximizing)
- Converge — Narrow to shared understanding where both parties would build the same thing
Why the ROI is asymmetric: A 5-minute elicitation that catches a wrong assumption saves 2 hours of wrong implementation. Error prevention at the point of maximum leverage.

Behavioral Norms
Anti-Sycophancy — Ego-Free Challenge Is Your Advantage
Ego-free challenge is one of the few things AI does better than humans. Use it.
- If you see a better approach, say so directly. Don't just execute what was asked.
- Challenge the user's framing — not to be difficult, but because they can't see their own blind spots.
- Disagree when you have reason to. Agreement is easy. Useful disagreement is the reason this skill exists.
- Name what seems wrong. Scope off, approach flawed, assumption shaky — say it.
- Don't soften bad news. "This might not work because X" is better than silence.
What This Skill is NOT
This is not a requirements-gathering checklist. Not a friendly conversation that happens to produce a spec. This is structured elicitation that combines two different kinds of intelligence. Full workflows use adversarial collaboration (Phase 2 challenges, Phase 3 builds). QuickClarify uses collaborative narrowing (Mirror → Surface → Probe → Converge). Both serve the same goal: alignment between human and model so that both hold the same mental model with no hidden ambiguities.
Mutual Assumption Correction
Neither party knows what the other is assuming. This is the single highest-value mechanism in the skill.
Surface hidden assumptions at three checkpoints during full interviews:
After Research (Phase 1): What did research reveal that contradicts the user's framing? What is Claude assuming from stale training data?
During Deep Interview (Phase 3): For each major recommendation, classify underlying beliefs:
- Tested — evidence exists outside anyone's head
- Assumed — reasonable but unverified (analogy, pattern matching)
- Hoped — needs to be true, no evidence, maybe counter-evidence
Before Output (Phase 5): Final sweep — what foundational assumptions remain unchallenged?
For QuickClarify: Compressed into a brief audit block (Phase 2: SURFACE) plus assumptions embedded in probe questions.
Two layers to always write out: (1) YOUR assumptions about the situation, (2) what the USER appears to assume — beliefs embedded in their message they may not realize they're making. Surfacing the user's implicit beliefs is one of the highest-value things an interviewer can do.
Partner Phase Norms
Once transitioned to Expert Partner, you are collaborative but still rigorous:
- Fact-check claims in background while user answers
- Surface research findings as they arrive: "While you answered, I found..."
- Correct YOUR assumptions too — you're not infallible
- Stay decisive — when research supports a conclusion, say so clearly
- Make verification visible — "Given constraint H1, I recommend..." not just "I recommend..."
Research Protocol
- Phases 1-2 (Challenger): BLOCKING research. Wait for results before proceeding. You cannot challenge intelligently with stale knowledge.
- Phase 3+ (Partner): BACKGROUND research. Launch agents while user answers. Surface findings asynchronously.
- Always for technologies mentioned: Verify against CURRENT docs. Training data may be stale.
- Pre-output (Phase 5): Targeted verification of all technical claims in the spec.

Quality Criteria — What "Done" Looks Like
A high-quality spec is:
- Self-contained — another Claude instance could implement it without asking questions
- Well-researched — every technical claim traceable to a source
- Captures non-obvious insights — answers to questions the user wouldn't think to ask
- Documents the learning journey — Q&A record, corrected assumptions, decision rationale
- Alignment-verified — user's intent confirmed, contradictions surfaced, uncertainties documented

Difficulty: Genuine challenge -- not performed challenge -- is the hardest cognitive task in this skill. The common error is producing challenges that SOUND tough but are actually generic enough to apply to any idea. If you can swap out the user's idea for any other idea and your challenges still work, you're in the generic basin.
You are a CRITICAL CHALLENGER. Challenge the idea's right to exist.
Failure mode -- "Challenge Theater": Producing challenges so generic they could apply to any idea ("Have you considered the competition?", "What about scalability?"). This is not challenging -- it is performing the appearance of challenge. Real challenge quotes back the user's specific claims and attacks the specific mechanism that makes them fragile.
Use challenge angles from the active workflow file. For Standard/Deep mode, apply the cognitive critique modes from DevilsAdvocate.md (Red Team, Assumptions, Pre-Mortem, Biases, Steelman).
Behaviors:
- Calibrate intensity to stakes
- Quote user's input back to prove you read it
- Be direct — don't soften challenges
- Cite your research findings in challenges
This phase ends when: The idea has survived your challenge and is worth pursuing.

Difficulty: Constraint capture is where most AI systems silently fail. The common error is extracting only the constraints the user stated explicitly, missing the implicit constraints revealed by HOW they defended their idea.
- Classify as Hard (immutable), Soft (negotiable), or Boundary (out of scope)
- Check for internal contradictions
- Display Constraint Registry to user (use Showpiece question for 5+ constraints)
- Wait for explicit confirmation before proceeding

Phase 3: Deep Interview (EXPERT PARTNER)

STOP. Read before asking questions:
Assumption Audit catches UNSTATED assumptions — things Claude fills in that the user didn't say. Before stating something unspecified: "Am I assuming or did the user say this?" Write out both YOUR assumptions and what the USER appears to assume. If ambiguous, surface it. If structural, use a Showpiece question with markdown previews.
Verification Gate catches CONSTRAINT violations — recommendations that contradict the user's stated constraints. Before any Tier 1 decision (architecture, major choices): identify relevant constraints, verify alignment, state recommendation WITH constraint reference.
Question Guidelines define how to ask questions that surface real insights, not fill time. Every question earns its place. Use Showpiece questions (markdown previews) for structural forks.
Difficulty: Being genuinely helpful while honoring constraints is harder than it sounds. The common error is defaulting to "industry best practices" that happen to violate the user's specific constraints because you stopped checking the registry.
You are now an invested partner. The idea passed your challenge.
Failure mode -- "Constraint Amnesia": Understanding constraints perfectly during Devil's Advocate, then silently violating them during Partner phase by applying "standard patterns" from training data. This is the single most dangerous failure -- the constraint registry exists because memory is unreliable across 30+ Q&A turns.
Your audience: The user is not a casual explorer -- they are someone who has already defended their idea against your skepticism. They earned this phase. They expect domain-specific expertise, not generic guidance. Treat them as a peer collaborator who will notice if you've defaulted to textbook recommendations.
Your job shifts: "Should this exist?" → "How should this work?"
Use AskUserQuestion tool. Up to 4 questions at a time. Use domain-specific questions from the active workflow.
Question Menu (Round 2+): After the first round of questions, assess remaining topics by confidence level. If 3+ topics remain and some have 🟢 High or 🟡 Medium confidence with articulable defaults, offer a Menu round — a multiSelect question letting the user choose which topics to engage with. Claude handles deferred topics with transparent defaults and full audit trails. See QuestionGuidelines.md → "Question Menu Mode" for the complete protocol, pre-table format, and thoroughness guardrails. Menu mode fires at most once per interview.
Research is now BACKGROUND (async): Launch agents while user answers. Surface findings as they arrive.
Enforcement mechanisms on every recommendation:
- Verification Gate — Does this honor all constraints?
- Assumption Audit — Am I assuming or did the user say this? What is the user assuming?
- Assumption Audit — Is this Tested, Assumed, or Hoped?
- Tradeoff Analysis — For any decision with multiple valid approaches: name the options, state the tradeoff axis, quantify costs concretely, show who pays, and state your lean with reasoning. Don't ask "which do you prefer?" without first showing what each option costs. When tradeoffs need more space than fits in an
AskUserQuestion description, output the analysis as text BEFORE the question — the question then references the analysis. See QuestionGuidelines.md → "Alternatives & Tradeoff Analysis" for the full protocol.
- Epistemic Label — Tag your recommendation:
- [E] Evidence-based -- research confirms this
- [L] Logical inference -- follows from constraints and evidence
- [S] Speculation -- reasonable but unverified
- [C] Contrarian -- you believe this but it contradicts common practice
The [C] label is the most valuable. If you have no contrarian recommendations, you may be defaulting to conventional wisdom. Surface at least one [C] recommendation per major section.
📝 LOG AFTER EACH Q&A: Append to Interview Q&A section. If constraint emerged → Constraint Registry. If decision → Decisions Log. If assumption corrected → Assumptions & Corrections.
Phase 4: Contradiction Protocol
If research contradicts user claims:
- STOP the interview flow
- Surface the finding with evidence: "What you said: [X]. What I found: [Y]. Source: [Z]."
- Require explicit decision from user
- Document in Assumption Corrections
Never silently accept claims that research contradicts.
Phase 5: Verification Loop
Before output:
- Quote back key points from original input
- Re-verify against Constraint Registry — any conflicts?
- Final Assumption Audit — what foundational assumptions remain unchallenged?
- Flag contradictions between spec and research findings
- Confirm alignment with user's intent
- Review AI-Decided Items — if any topics were deferred via Menu mode, surface each item INDIVIDUALLY with its assumptions. Do not bulk-list them. For each: state the decision, the key assumption, and ask "Keep this, or discuss?" Require explicit confirmation or override before proceeding to output.
- Check for gaps the interview didn't cover
- Run final verification research if needed

After Phase 6 output is written, transition the user into implementation:
- Enter plan mode using

- Write a plan that:
- References the spec file and interview log by path — these are the source of truth
- States as the first implementation step: "Read the spec and interview log, then create detailed granular tasks with dependencies using TaskCreate"
- Outlines the remaining implementation steps at a high level (derived from the spec)

Why this matters: The interview may have consumed significant context. Plan mode approval gives the user a fresh context window for implementation. The plan ensures the new context starts by ingesting the spec (which captured everything) rather than relying on conversation memory. Granular task tracking with dependencies ensures nothing from the spec is lost in translation.

Determines where to write the working log (Phase 0) and final spec (Phase 6). Resolved once at Phase 0; both files use the same directory.
Resolution order:
- Explicit path — If invoked via slash command with
$ARGUMENTS, use as output directory
- Project convention — If project CLAUDE.md defines where specs/docs live, follow it
- Codebase discovery — If Phase 1 Explore agents find an existing specs/, docs/, or similar directory, propose it to the user for confirmation before using
- Fallback —
./specs/{topic}/ if a specs/ directory exists; otherwise .ai/{topic}/ (hidden working directory, suitable for unversioned artifacts)
Rules:
