# Rails skills Three skills for Rails 8 work: migrations you can run while the app is serving traffic, service objects with a clear result and transaction boundary, and RSpec request specs that cover the cases people forget. Each one is a plain SKILL.md file. Your coding agent reads it when the task matches. ## Install From the root of your Rails app: ```bash git clone https://github.com/autohandai/skillpack-rails mkdir -p .claude/skills cp -R skillpack-rails/skills/* .claude/skills/ ``` Copy the skill folders themselves, so you get `.claude/skills/rails-safe-migrations/SKILL.md` and not a nested pack folder. Some agents only look one level deep. For every project on your machine, copy them into `~/.claude/skills/` instead. Most agents pick a skill up when your request matches its description. To call one by name, mention it: `$rails-safe-migrations` in Autohand Code, or `/rails-safe-migrations` in Claude Code. ## Skills | Skill | What it does | |---|---| | `rails-safe-migrations` | Concurrent indexes, unvalidated constraints, `ignored_columns`, batched backfills. Full patterns are in `references/patterns.md` | | `rails-service-objects` | One operation per class, a result object, writes in a transaction, and jobs after commit | | `rails-request-specs` | Request specs for HTML and JSON endpoints, covering signed out, wrong user and invalid input | ## Adapting it - On MySQL, read the MySQL notes in `rails-safe-migrations` and delete the PostgreSQL-only rows. - If your app already has a service convention (`call` vs `perform`, dry-monads, interactors), change the shape in `rails-service-objects` to match. - Replace the `sign_in_as` helper in `rails-request-specs` with whatever your auth setup uses. Keep the `name` in the frontmatter the same as the folder name. Written against Rails 8.1 and rspec-rails 8 as of October 2026. The migration patterns follow the strong_migrations README.
