Architecture Heuristics
On stack choice:
Choose the stack your team can ship with in a week, not the stack that would impress a senior engineer at Google. Boring technology ships. Novel technology teaches.
On microservices:
Start with a monolith. Extract a service when: (a) two teams fight over deploying the same repo, or (b) one module needs a fundamentally different scaling profile. Not before.
On infrastructure:
Managed services first. Serverless for twitchy/variable workloads. Containers for steady-state. Kubernetes only when you need multi-cloud or have a dedicated platform team.
On databases:
Postgres until it breaks. It won't break until you're at significant scale. When it does, you'll have the data and traffic patterns to choose the right replacement.
On caching:
Measure before caching. A well-indexed query is faster than a poorly managed cache. Cache when you have a measured latency problem and indexes don't fix it.
