Data Cleaning Recipes

Anti-Patterns

• Hardcoded values in formulas -- =A2*0.25 should be =A2*TaxRate using a named range or cell reference. Magic numbers break when rates change.
• Nested IF 5+ levels deep -- use IFS(), SWITCH(), or a lookup table instead. Unreadable formulas are unmaintainable formulas.
• VLOOKUP column numbers -- VLOOKUP(A2, Data, 4, 0) breaks when someone inserts a column. Use INDEX-MATCH or XLOOKUP.
• Volatile functions everywhere -- INDIRECT(), OFFSET(), NOW(), TODAY() recalculate on every change. Use sparingly or pin with F9 paste-as-value.
• No data validation on inputs -- garbage in, garbage out. Add dropdowns, number ranges, and custom validation messages.
