| description | Managerial Moment of Truth (MMOT) framework for addressing discrepancies between expectation and delivery, combined with qualitative performance evaluation beyond numerical metrics. Use when reviewing performance, giving/receiving feedback, addressing expectation gaps (positive or negative), evaluating work quality, or when numerical ratings feel inadequate. Transforms performance moments into structured learning opportunities using truth-as-verb methodology.

Performance Truth: MMOT & Beyond Numerical Metrics
Core Idea: MMOT as a Generative Act
The Managerial Moment of Truth transforms discrepancies between expectation and delivery into opportunities for learning and advancement — not problem-solving. Every discrepancy creates structural tension that can be resolved through creation, not just correction.
The Leader's Choice (Binary)
When you recognize a difference between what was expected and what was delivered:
- Lead: Engage with the discrepancy through the MMOT process
- Overlook: Reinforce existing patterns, stifle potential, prevent learning
There is no middle ground. This is a digital decision (see /digital-decision-making).
"Truth as a Verb"
Truth is not abstract — it is the active process of "you and I talking about what we see and coming to some consensus about what we see." All truth is an achievement, actively forged through deliberate effort.
The Four-Step MMOT Process
Step 1: Acknowledge the Truth (Get to Yes)
- Establish shared vision of reality between parties
- Require an affirmative yes to confirm agreement
- Not personal — about learning
- Ground in facts: "We expected X, we delivered Y"
Step 2: Analyze How It Got That Way (Blow-by-Blow)
- Step-by-step examination of the process
- "What steps did you go through that led you to think this was quality work?"
- Co-exploration, not reprimand — mentorship
- Uncover hidden assumptions and process flaws
Step 3: Create an Action Plan
- "How would I do it differently next time?"
- Translate insights into tangible commitments
- Completes the loop: planning → executing → learning
- Creates a new structural tension chart for improved performance
Step 4: Require Documentation
- The person who received feedback summarizes: what they heard, what they'll do, when
- Reveals discrepancies between what was said and what was heard
- Forces managerial clarity
- Prevents future oscillating patterns from misunderstanding
Types of MMOT
Corrective MMOTs
Performance falls short of expectations. Address when small — don't let molehills become mountains.
Positive MMOTs
Performance exceeds expectations. Dissect HOW it happened so success can be "bottled" and replicated. Overlooking positive differences wastes organizational learning.
Unreasonable Goals
Aspirational, difficult but not impossible goals that push creativity and force deep learning. When met, trigger powerful positive MMOTs.
Beyond Numerical Metrics
Numerical scales (0-10) are reductive — they fail to capture context, effort, and learning trajectory. MMOT replaces scores with co-created shared reality:
- Instead of a number → a conversation
- Instead of judging past → creating future
- Instead of abstract rating → specific shared understanding
- Qualitative clarity > quantitative abstraction
Common Pitfalls
| Pitfall | Correction |
|---|
| Skipping steps (especially documentation) | All four steps are sequential and critical |
| "Once is enough" mentality | Persist with mentorship — development is continuous |
| "It's all about them" | Recognize manager's own clarity may be lacking |
| Facts vs. speculation confusion | Ground in "truth as a verb" |
| Too little → too much → too little | Address consistently when small |
Rules of Thumb
- Do it quickly — address discrepancies promptly
- Follow all four steps but make it your own
- Don't give up — persist in developing potential
- Manager clarity matters — the gap can be a two-way street
- Know what MMOT is not — it's a specific tool, not a panacea
Integration
- Creative Orientation (
/creative-orientation): MMOT embodies generative orientation in interpersonal contexts
- Structural Tension Charting (
/structural-tension-charting): Action plans from Step 3 map directly to telescoped charts
- Digital Decision Making (
/digital-decision-making): "Lead or Overlook" is a fundamental binary decision
- Delayed Resolution (
/delayed-resolution): "Truth as a verb" requires tolerating discrepancy until genuine consensus
