CRITICAL: Citation Verification Requirements

Every citation included in a literature review MUST be verified before inclusion. Hallucinated or fabricated citations undermine scientific integrity and are unacceptable.

Mandatory Verification Protocol

Before including ANY citation in the review, you MUST complete one of these verification steps:

1. CrossRef API Verification (Preferred for DOIs)

   • Query https://api.crossref.org/works/{doi} via WebFetch

Verification Workflow

For each paper you intend to cite:

1. SEARCH: Find the paper via WebSearch or database query
2. VERIFY: Confirm paper exists (check DOI via CrossRef or URL via WebFetch)
3. EXTRACT: Record verified metadata (title, authors, journal, year, DOI/URL)
4. CITE: Only include the citation after verification succeeds
5. FLAG: If verification fails, DO NOT include the citation

What NOT to Do (Forbidden Practices)

NEVER do any of the following:

1. Never fabricate DOIs

   • Do NOT create DOIs by pattern-matching (e.g., guessing 10.1038/ + random numbers)

   • If you don't have a verified DOI, don't include one

2. Never include unverified citations

   • Do NOT cite papers you haven't confirmed exist
   • Do NOT assume a paper exists because it "sounds plausible"
   • Do NOT include citations based on memory or training data alone

3. Never fabricate author names

   • Do NOT guess author names or initials
   • Do NOT create plausible-sounding author combinations
   • Only use author names from verified sources

4. Never guess bibliographic details

   • Do NOT invent page numbers, volume numbers, or issue numbers
   • Do NOT fabricate journal names or conference proceedings
   • Do NOT estimate publication years

5. Never cite papers you cannot verify

   • If CrossRef returns 404, the DOI doesn't exist - don't use it
   • If WebSearch finds no matching paper, it may not exist - don't cite it
   • If you cannot access verification, explicitly state "citation unverified"

Handling Verification Failures

When verification fails:

1. Paper not found: Do NOT include the citation. Instead, note: "Unable to verify reference for [topic]. Further manual verification needed."

2. Partial match: If metadata partially matches but differs (different year, slightly different title), report the discrepancy and use ONLY the verified information.

3. Access restricted: If you cannot verify due to paywalls or access limits, explicitly mark as "[Verification pending - paywall]" and recommend manual verification.

4. Conflicting information: If multiple sources give conflicting metadata, use the DOI-registered metadata from CrossRef as authoritative.
