Line-Drawing Jazz Ad-lib (線から描くジャズ・アドリブ)
Methodology source: Kado Takuhiro, Sen kara Egaku Jazz Ad-lib no Tsukurikata ("How to Build Jazz Ad-libs by Drawing Lines", Rittor Music, 2016).
Core idea: do not start from scales — start from the "line" (線, the melodic contour drawn before choosing notes).
The root cause of "memorized every scale but still can't improvise" is not knowing how to use the memorized scales.
The solution: take your humming (hana-uta) or the vague mental image of "roughly higher here, roughly lower there" (nantonaku) and draw it directly as a contour line (線) on the staff, then translate the line into notes — no perfect pitch required.
0. Overall Workflow (Three Steps)
- Draw the line: draw the melodic direction directly as a polyline on the staff (ascending / descending / mountain / valley / zigzag). The line = the phrase's contour and guide.
- Fill in notes: write notes along the line (eighth notes as the basic unit), filling it with three kinds of material: "scale + arpeggio + chromatic scale".
- Adjust to the chords: following the "chord-tone priority beat-position ranking" (Chapter 3), change the notes on key beat positions to chord tones (chord tones / コード・トーン) of the current chord.
Conventions and terminology:
- Default environment in the book: C major, 4/4 time, demo progression Dm7→G7→C△7 (IIm7–V7–I△7).
- Note names use Japanese katakana fixed-do solfège: ド=C, レ=D, ミ=E, ファ=F, ソ=G, ラ=A, シ=B.
- オモテ拍 = on-beat (the first eighth-note half of each beat); ウラ拍 = offbeat (the second eighth-note half).
- Strong/weak pattern: beats follow "odd strong, even weak" (beats 1 and 3 = strong beats), and measures likewise ("odd strong, even weak": measures 1 and 3 = strong measures).
1. Four Hard Conditions for Drawing Lines
- Stay within the instrument's range:
- Keep the phrase's total range within 2 octaves;
- Center on the middle register (the middle register plays best on any instrument; extreme high/low registers require advanced technique).
- Do not stretch intervals (インターバル) too wide:
- Within 2 beats (4 eighth notes), stay within 1 octave;
- When you want a wide range, draw a long line — not a steep short one.
- Do not draw lines that are too complex: overly complex lines are unplayable; keep them simple.
- Do not exceed your own technique: the primary goal is to play the phrase from start to finish without mistakes — avoid virtuoso high-speed passages, huge leaps, and complex rhythms.
2. The Line-Type System (線の種類と組み合わせ)
Basic unit: 2 beats, 4 notes (eighth notes). For lines in the same direction, the angle determines the character:
- Gentle angle → scale-style (スケール) melody;
- Steep angle → wider intervals → arpeggio-style (アルペジオ) phrase.
2.1 Ascending Lines (上昇)
- Gentle ascent (なだらかな上昇): first-to-last interval of a 4th–5th.
- Examples (starting from ド): ドレミファ, ドレミソ, ドミファソ.
- Steep ascent (急上昇): first-to-last 6th–7th (4 notes exceeding one octave sounds off, so staying within the octave is the rule).
- Steep ascents are graded into 3 levels by the largest internal leap within the phrase:
- Contains a 3rd leap: ドミファラ, ドミソラ, ドミソシ — no awkwardness at all, blends most easily into a melody;
- Contains a 4th leap: ドファソラ, ドレソラ, ドレミラ, ドファソシ, etc. — intermediate character;
- Contains a 5th leap: ドソラシ, ドレミシ — strong impact, but harder to blend into a melody.
- Choose by taste, but remember the character difference between the three levels.
2.2 Descending Lines (下降)
- The mirror image of ascending: same 2-beat/4-note unit, divided into gentle/steep.
- Gentle descent (first-to-last 4th–5th): ドシラソ, ドシラファ, ドシソファ, ドラソファ.
- Steep descent (first-to-last 6th–7th), likewise graded by largest internal leap:
- Contains a 3rd: ドシソミ, ドラソミ, ドラファレ, etc. — natural;
- Contains a 4th: ドソファミ, ドシラミ, ドラソレ, etc.;
- Contains a 5th: ドファミレ, ドシミレ — strong impact, hard to blend.
2.3 Flat Lines (平坦)
- Definition: an extremely gentle rise/fall whose first-to-last interval within 2 beats stays within a 3rd (not repeated same notes).
- In a major scale, 4 eighth notes won't fit inside a 3rd → the core technique is changing the rhythm:
- First-to-last 3rd: mix in one quarter note (ド-レミ, ドレ-ミ, ド-シラ, ドシ-ラ) — a quarter note dropped into a stream of eighths creates rhythmic impact (インパクト) by itself;
- First-to-last 2nd: only 2 notes are possible (quarter or dotted-quarter rhythms, e.g. ド→レ, ド→シ) — suits a relaxed (ゆったり) mood;
- First-to-last unison (same pitch): one sustained note — precisely because there is only one note, it stands out strongly in the phrase and carries an important role.
- The chromatic scale (半音階) lets you achieve a flat line while keeping 4 eighth notes:
- Examples: ド ド♯ レ レ♯, ド ド♯ レ ミ, ド シ シ♭ ラ, ド(quarter) シ シ♭.
- Key rule: put altered notes (notes with accidentals) on the offbeat (ウラ拍) as much as possible; landing on the on-beat makes them sound outside the key (Key).
- E.g. in ドシシ♭ラ, シ♭ landing on the on-beat is a shape to avoid; the quarter-note version ド-シ-シ♭ is preferable.
2.4 Zigzag Lines (ジグザグ)
- Motivation: when you want to keep continuous eighth notes without using the chromatic scale or reducing the note count, notes are allowed to "derail" (脱線, deviate from the line), forming a small repeated up-down zigzag.
- Two derailing rules:
- Do not deviate far from the original line;
- The first note and last note must not change (start and end fixed; the middle is free).
- Notated examples (2 beats, 4 notes):
- First-to-last 2nd: ドミドレ, ドレミレ (ascending); ドシラシ, ドラドシ (descending);
- First-to-last 3rd (more options): ドレドミ, ドミレミ, ドミファミ, ドレファミ (ascending); ドシドラ, ドラシラ, ドラソラ, ドシソラ (descending).
- For players who "can only run up and down the scale", "draw a flat line + fix the eighth-note count" is an extremely effective option.
2.5 Short Lines and Long Lines
- With the same start and end points:
- Short line → steep angle → arpeggio-like (e.g. ラ ド ミ ファ ソ charging up in two beats);
- Long line → gentle angle → near-flat, to be filled with "scale + chromatic + derailed notes" (e.g. ラ シ ド シ ド ド♯ レ レ♯|ミ ド レ ミ ソ…ラ).
- Good short-line example: 4 notes within 1 octave (ラ ド ミ ソ);
- Bad short-line example: 4 notes exceeding 1 octave (ド ソ ミ ド spanning past the octave) — when you want a wide range, draw a long line, not a steep short one.
- Long lines are the key to escaping beginner level:
- Common trait of beginners = phrases are too short; they can barely play 2+ continuous measures of eighth notes, and even when they can, it is mostly scale runs up and down;
- Practice: first draw ascending/descending lines of 2+ measures, decide the line's length and angle (starting note, ending note) in advance, and practice until you can play right along the line.
2.6 Mountain (山: ascend → descend)
- Three elements: start point, peak (頂点), end point, each assigned to low/mid/high register; shifting the peak's position forward or backward produces all kinds of mountains.
- Note-filling rules:
- Start → peak with a wide register span (low → high) → run the major scale;
- Narrow span (low → mid, mid → high) → fill mostly with the chromatic scale.
- The peak's position determines the character:
- Peak in the middle (1 measure up + 1 measure down): the orthodox mountain shape. Caution: in a near-symmetrical mountain, deliberately change the note choices between ascent and descent, otherwise it becomes a boring mirror image.
- Example: ascending scale ミファソラシドレミ, descent replaced with leap-containing ファミレド ラファミレ;
- Peak in the front half (beats 2–3 of measure 1): start → peak is a steep ascent → naturally forms an opening ascending arpeggio; peak → end is a long gentle descent → often uses chromatics or quarter-note rhythmic variation.
- "Ascending arpeggio + chromatic descent" is a high-frequency classic pattern of jazz phrasing — master it without fail;
- Example: ファラドミソ ソ♭ファミ|レドシラソファミレ (F-A-C-E-G arpeggio charges to the peak, then a long chromatic+scale descent);
- Peak in the back half: peak → end is a steep descent → descending arpeggios (下降アルペジオ) appear frequently.
- Most players are fluent in ascending arpeggios but weak at descending ones — use this as the chance to overcome it.
2.7 Valley (谷: descend → ascend)
- The inversion of the mountain: design with three points — start point, bottom (底点), end point — likewise classified by low/mid/high register when drawing.
- Same caution: in a near-symmetrical valley, do not let the descent and ascent be left-right symmetrical in their notes.
- Bottom in the front half: often opens with a descending arpeggio (e.g. ファレシソ… dropping to the bottom), then bottom → end is a gentle long ascent;
- Bottom in the back half: start → bottom descends gently, bottom → end rises steeply.
- Example: ソ ファ ミ ミ♭ レ ド シ ラ|ソ ファ ミ レ ド ファ ラ ド (a gentle descent lasting nearly two measures, then the closing ファ–ラ–ド arpeggio-style leaps pull back up to the high register).
- Filling pattern: descending segments favor dense chromatic filling (all chromatic notes on offbeats); the ascending sprint favors scale + arpeggio leaps to create steepness.
2.8 Combining Mountains and Valleys (組み合わせ)
- Real phrases are combinations of mountains and valleys. Method: first decide how many times the line bends and fix the overall shape, then convert to notes.
- 2-bend variation (2 bends = 3 line segments):
- Only two basic forms: ascend→descend→ascend, and descend→ascend→descend;
- Combine segments by length as short/long/equal (within 2 measures use "2 short + 1 long" or "3 equal"; "2 long + 1 short" won't fit).
- 3-bend variation (3 bends = 4 segments): up→down→up→down or down→up→down→up, segments roughly equal.
- Important: multiple peaks (or bottoms) must not sit at the same height — equal heights sound like a plain scale run up and down, and not cool;
- Scatter the peak and bottom heights (e.g. first peak レ, second peak ファ higher).
- Applied form of the 2-bend variation: two segments in the same direction (ascend→ascend, descend→descend) = changing the line's angle midway.
- E.g. "gentle chromatic ascent → steep arpeggio ascent": the density suddenly shifts — still continuously ascending, yet the impression is completely different.
2.9 Dynamics (強弱)
- The universal tendency of melody: high notes strong, low notes weak. Jazz phrases are no different.
- Mountain shapes are strongest at the peak (add an accent / アクセント); valley shapes are weakest at the bottom.
- The biggest reason that transcribing (コピー) a master and "playing the same notes still doesn't sound like them" = failing to reproduce the dynamics.
- Once the fingering is secure, always play with dynamics in mind.
3. Note-Filling Rules: Adjusting the Line into Notes (音へ変換するときの調整法)
3.1 Chord-Tone Priority Beat-Position Ranking (優先順位) ★ Core Rule
Chord tones alone cannot make a fluent phrase (strictly speaking they can, but it isn't cool), so set a priority ranking and align chord tones only on selected beat positions (the smaller the number, the higher the priority — placing a chord tone there is the more "stable" choice):

- In practice, covering levels ②–③ is enough (= the on-beats of beats 1 and 3 of every measure are chord tones).
- Do not over-apply: extending to ④⑤ makes the phrase almost entirely stepwise diatonic motion and turns it "ordinary" — "ordinary" is not bad, but staying that way from start to finish cannot please the listener.
- The priority ranking can vary phrase by phrase: one phrase uses up to ③, the next only ①, alternating tension and release.
- With a chord progression (e.g. Dm7→G7→C△7, one chord per measure): the on-beats of beats 1 and 3 of each measure = chord tones of the current chord.
- Dm7 = レ ファ ラ ド; G7 = ソ シ レ ファ; C△7 = ド ミ ソ シ.
- When the line conflicts with a chord tone, correction is inevitable (e.g. the line sits near ファ but a chord tone is required → deliberately move the note to ソ) — be able to respond flexibly.
- Probability safety net:
- Of the 7 scale tones, a four-note chord's chord tones account for 4 → even landing at random you hit a chord tone with 4/7 (better than half) probability;
- When the line misses a chord tone, moving a second up or down is guaranteed to hit one (chord tones and non-chord tones alternate within the scale), so no big rewrite is needed.
3.2 Sustained Notes (伸ばす音を入れる)
Using nothing but eighth notes falls into monotony (マンネリ). Add notes sustained 2 beats or more, deciding two things: position (beginning / middle / end) × pitch (high / low):

3.3 Designing the Point Note (ポイント)
- Jazz is generally played with accents on the high notes, i.e. the mountain peak; this "spot that stands out in performance" is called the point (ポイント).
- Peak = the strongest, most impactful note → the peak note must be a chord tone (over C△7, among candidates ファ/ソ/ラ, choose the chord tone ソ).
- Peak at the phrase start (open high, move down) vs. peak at the end (open low, climb up) give completely different impressions:
- Choose by taste, but in an actual solo do not lean to one side (all high openings, or all high endings = bad examples).
- Sustaining the peak (2+ beats) → the highest note is emphasized even more → all the more reason it should be a chord tone; the beginning/middle/end positions each give a completely different impression — use them in balance.
- Reverse technique: accent the lowest note:
- The exact opposite of the usual accenting habit — use it when you want to create impact;
- The lowest note will stick out unusually — to avoid sounding out of key, the lowest note must also be a chord tone.
- Low sustained notes almost never take an accent:
- The nature of a long low note is not "attract attention" but "lurk quietly" (laying groundwork for the later build-up / 盛り上げ);
- But when the sustained note occupies most of the measure's duration → it should still be a chord tone.
3.4 Three Ways to Start a Phrase (ポイントを最初へ)
The same line sounds completely different depending on how it starts:
- Start moving (動かして始める): begin the phrase in motion with eighth notes — the default approach;
- Start with a sustained note (伸ばして始める): hold the first note for a quarter note or longer before dropping into the eighth-note flow;
- Benefit: you can think about the rest of the phrase while sustaining the first note, which reduces pointless dragging at the phrase's end;
- Start with a rest (休符で始める): deliberately do not play the beginning portion of the line — open the phrase with a rest;
- Benefit: the way space between phrases is taken (間の取り方) changes, giving the listener a sense of ease.
- Common beginner ailment: starting "in motion" with dense notes, running out of material (ネタ切れ) toward the back half, and always dragging a long note at the end — dense front, sparse back.
- Direction for improvement: move the note-count reduction from the phrase's tail to its head.
3.5 Ending the Phrase (フレーズの終わり方)
- Starting matters, and the ending equally shapes the impression; stock several ending patterns to prevent monotony (マンネリ化).
- Method: decide the note count of the final measure in advance — exactly 1 note / 2 notes / 3 notes / 4+ notes; practice each category to correct inertia and ingrained habits (クセ).
- 1 note: the final measure holds only a whole note (e.g. ド over C△7);
- 2 notes: ド→ミ, ド→ソ, etc., with 4 rhythmic variants (including the form that syncopates in from the previous measure's offbeat);
- 3 notes: various rhythmic placements of ド レ ミ;
- 4+ notes: chromatic climbs like ド ド♯ レ ミ / ド ド♯ レ レ♯ ミ ソ…, denser as the notes increase.
- Common point: however many notes, the final landing note is a chord tone (over C△7, land on ミ, ソ, ド), and chromatic notes along the way (ド♯, レ♯) fall on offbeats.
- Idea ① syncopation (シンコペーション):
- Here this means a rhythm that enters early from the offbeat (ウラ拍) with a tie (タイ);
- When reducing the note count, introduce syncopation — if every note lands on the on-beat, it sounds stiff.
- Idea ② length of the final note:
- The default is to let the final note extend along the line to the last beat;
- Also keep the option of "deliberately adding a rest to cut the line short midway" (final note stops abruptly as an eighth) — merely shortening the last note changes the impression completely;
- Likewise: do not use the same rhythm every time.
- Few notes → technically easy but hard to sound cool; many notes → easy to sound cool but prone to monotony. Build a large ending stock in both directions.
3.6 Varying the Note Count and Shrinking the Line (音数を変える・線を縮める)
- Fundamental order: first realize the entire line in eighth notes (2 measures = 16 notes), then subtract.
- Subtracting notes demands better rhythmic control (after adding long notes it is easy to rush / ハシる; practice until you can carve out the rhythm accurately).
- Reduction method A: replace some 2-beat group of "4 notes" with a long-note rhythm such as "dotted quarter + eighth" (position is free; there is more than one rhythmic pattern — try several).
- Reduction method B (線を縮める, shrinking the line): keep the pitches of the start / peak (or bottom) / end unchanged, and shorten the line by sliding the start or end horizontally:
- Push the start later: open with a rest (e.g. rest + ソシドミソ|…);
- Pull the end earlier: close early (e.g. …ラソミド ソ + rest).
- NG rule: rests may not be placed in the middle of a phrase — only at the head or tail.
- Inserting one in the middle changes the "number of lines" (本数), destroying the solo image you originally designed.
3.7 Correcting the Line (線の修正)
Once drawn and converted to notes, the result may still not sound good; when "something feels off", three corrections (all keeping start, peak/bottom, and end unchanged):
- Just try bending the line (とりあえず線を曲げてみる):
- The most common boring phrase = a plain scale ascent + descent (ドレミファソラシド|レドシラソファミレ) — this does not count as a jazz phrase;
- Turn it into a two-stage shape: steep arpeggio ascent + gentle chromatic ascent (ド ミ ソ ソ♯ ラ シ ド ド♯|…, with ド♯ as a leading tone toward レ);
- Same for descents: insert chromatics (レ シ ラ ラ♭ ソ ファ ミ レ) to create a two-stage descent;
- Arpeggios and the chromatic scale are precisely the key (キモ) to jazz-flavored phrases.
- Insert an arpeggio (アルペジオを入れる): swap some 2-beat group for an arpeggio;
- Opening: ド ミ ソ シ ド charging straight to the peak; closing: レ♭ ド ラ ファ レ descending arpeggio to settle.
- Insert the chromatic scale (半音階を入れる): swap some 2-beat group for chromatics;
- Opening: ド ド♯ レ レ♯ ミ…; descending: レ レ♭ ド シ.
- Column viewpoint, "予測できるのはつまらない" (what can be predicted is boring):
- Nothing but scale runs up and down = a performance the audience can fully predict; the player must exceed the listener's predictions;
- Goal: mix at least two of the three materials — "scale, arpeggio, chromatic" — within a single phrase.
4. The Three Jazz-ifying Weapons (Gake / Approach Notes / Chromatic Scale)
4.1 Gake (崖, "cliff" — a leap of a 4th up to an octave)
- Definition: a leap interval within a phrase of a 4th or more, up to 1 octave, appearing as a vertical line when drawing.
- Divided into the ascending type (leap up) and descending type (leap down); both are common.
- Gake of a 6th or 7th most easily create phrases with a memorable point — used well, they raise your improvising a whole level at once.
- The first note after the leap usually carries an accent (アクセント) — it is the most impactful note in the phrase; when a gake jumps up to a high note it is accented nearly 100% of the time, and you must be able to deliver it solidly on both on-beats and offbeats.
- Three rules:
- Gake limited to within 1 octave: an interval that is too wide destroys the melody instead (NG); the general rule "no more than 1 octave within 2 beats" applies here too;
- Between an ascending line and another ascending line, a descending gake is mandatory:
- If the gake also went up, the melody would rise without end and become an off-the-wall (突拍子もない) melody;
- To stay melodic (メロディアス), the key is sandwiching a descending gake between the rising lines;
- Example: ソ ソ♯ ラ ラ♯ シ ド レ ↘ファ|ソ ラ ド レ ミ ファ ソ ラ;
- Between a descending line and another descending line, an ascending gake is mandatory (the symmetric rule — otherwise it falls forever);
- Example: ラ ラ♭ ソ ファ ミ レ ↗シ シ♭|ラ ファ レ ド シ ラ ソ ミ.
- Beat position of the gake (崖の位置):
- First, notice whether the leap happens on the on-beat (オモテ拍) or the offbeat (ウラ拍) — neither is right or wrong, but:
- In jazz from the bebop era onward, gake frequently occur on the offbeat (ウラ拍) — rare in other styles, arguably a melodic trait unique to jazz; consciously build gake on offbeats;
- The "offbeat gake" (ウラ拍の崖) is a wall that must be conquered to leave the beginner stage (beginners only leap on on-beats and are universally afraid of offbeat leaps);
- The most common position = the offbeat of the odd beats (beats 1 and 3) — the "classic of classics" (定番中の定番), master it without fail;
- The on-beats of the even beats (beats 2 and 4) = a rarely used position — precisely because of that, building a gake there easily yields a unique (ユニーク) phrase; try it after mastering the odd-beat offbeats;
- Drill: take the same line and shift only the leap point's beat position (all 16 on/off positions of beats 1–4 across 2 measures, one gake at a time), comparing the sound — the core exercise for internalizing beat-position feel.
4.2 Approach Notes (アプローチ・ノート)
- Conceptual origin: the major scale's 7th degree, the leading tone (導音; シ in C major), strongly tends to resolve to the tonic ド.
- An approach note = transplanting the leading tone's nature onto any note: first set a target note (ターゲット・ノート), then lead into it immediately before with the note a half step below.
- Mindset shift:
- Most people build phrases "from the front"; jazz phrases are often built by fixing the target note first and working backward (composing back-to-front actually flows better);
- The line method's start/peak/end points themselves already imply "clarify the target note first".
- Position rules:
- The approach note goes on the half-beat immediately before the target note;
- Since accidentals must sit on offbeats (the key-preservation principle), the approach note falls on the offbeat (ウラ拍) and the target note necessarily lands on the on-beat (オモテ拍);
- The target note is best as a chord tone (any in-scale note is acceptable).
- The 7 approach-note pairs in C major (idioms unique to jazz phrasing — master them thoroughly):
- ド♯→レ;
- レ♯→ミ;
- ミ→ファ (natural half step);
- ファ♯→ソ;
- ソ♯→ラ;
- ラ♯→シ;
- シ→ド (natural half step).
- Rules for the note before the approach note:
- Use a note higher than the target note: the approach note then functions as a leading tone; the distance between that note and the approach note must be within 1 octave (an octave or more apart = NG);
- If using a note lower than the target, the only option is the note a half step below the approach note (entering via consecutive chromatic ascent) — any lower note makes it sound like the scale has changed;
- Same pitch as the target = NG: the approach note's leading-tone quality is lost.
- The two most effective placements:
- The bottom of a valley (谷型の底点): a near-symmetric valley bottom easily repeats the same note (…ファ ミ|ファ…); replacing the bottom with an approach note avoids it (…ファ レ♯|ミ ファ ソ…, レ♯ → target ミ);
- The landing note of a descending gake: change the landed-on note into an approach note → very jazzy (…ソ ↘ラ♯|シ ド レ…, drop to ラ♯ then immediately resolve chromatically to target シ).
4.3 The Chromatic Scale (半音階)
- Jazz improvisation almost inevitably contains the chromatic scale somewhere; mixing chromatics into a phrase is one of the secrets to producing "jazz flavor" (ジャズっぽさ).
- It also solves the "repeated notes" problem:
- Jazz phrasing is characterized by rich harmonic color from tensions (テンション) etc.; many repeated notes within a measure (e.g. ドレミレドシ) destroy that;
- Actively using the chromatic scale avoids note repetition within the measure.
- Iron rule: altered notes on the offbeat (not an absolute rule, but it prevents sounding "out of key"; keep it in mind at all times).
- The trap — on/off-beat distribution when playing the chromatic scale in continuous eighths (starting from ド):

- Because ミ–ファ is itself a natural half step (no sharp), from ファ♯ onward the altered notes flip onto the on-beats. Countermeasures:
- At ミ, change the eighth note to a quarter note (resetting the on/off relationship); or
- Skip ファ♯ entirely, so subsequent altered notes return to the offbeats.
- Most players memorize the chromatic scale by finger habit (指グセ) rather than note names → altered notes drift onto on-beats unnoticed — check with note-name awareness.
5. Rhythm and Rests (リズムと休符)
5.1 Basic Rhythm Principles
- Eighth notes are the body of improvisation: first aim to play 2+ measures accurately in eighth notes — the first wall out of beginner territory.
- Reduce syncopation:
- Big-band ensembles and theme melodies use lots of syncopation, but restrain syncopation when improvising; take "1 measure = 8 eighth notes" as the basis;
- Exception: Latin-style tunes actually pair well with heavy syncopation.
- Swing (スウィング) ≠ haneru (ハネる, shuffle-style bouncing):
- Haneru = splitting the eighth pair into a 2:1 triplet feel; in swing the on-beat eighth is only slightly lengthened, never that far;
- Trick: don't sing phrases as "ta-a-ta ta-a-ta" — sing with voiced consonants, "doo-di-doo-da (ドゥーディドゥーダ)" — the voiced consonants delay the articulation slightly, and that "slight lateness" is the essence of swing.
5.2 Adding Notes by Tempo
Pure eighth notes at the mainstream session tempos of 120–140 (medium slow – medium) sound stretched-out and slack (間延び), not cool. Countermeasures by tempo tier:
- Tempo ≥160 (fast tunes): pure eighths work as-is;
- Tempo 120–140 → use triplets:
- Add 1 note to a pair of eighths to make a triplet; the added note can be in-scale or mix in a chromatic (e.g. ラ ラ♯シド(triplet) レ ミ; descending ドシ シ♭ラ(triplet) ソ);
- One triplet placed somewhere gives the rhythm shading (緩急) and the phrase instantly becomes interesting;
- Caution: don't let the eighths after the triplet get dragged along (don't over-bounce / over-swing); return faithfully to steady eighths;
- Tempo ≤120 → use sixteenth notes:
- Add 2 notes to a pair of eighths to make a 16th group — the essential tool for cool phrases at slow tempos;
- Besides scale runs, repeated-note ornamental figures (trill-like) are highly effective, and technically easy on most instruments;
- Eighth-note phrases should avoid note repetition, but 16ths move fast enough that repeated notes are safe;
- Drawback: easy to rush (ハシる) — train solid tempo-keeping ability.
- One line, four uses: from the same "source line" (元になる線) make:
- An approach-note version (pure eighths, imagining a faster tempo — if you can insert approach notes freely at speed, the jazz feel is in place);
- A triplet version (combined with chromatics);
- A 16th version (ornamental-figure approach);
- A mixed version of all three (the culmination) — once you can freely manipulate rhythm, you can produce swing feel even on slow tunes.
- One line yields at least 4 distinct phrases; the four techniques change only "density and drive", never the line's narrative.
- Commercial phrase books sound stiff when copied verbatim (取ってつけたような感じ, "tacked-on"), usually because their assumed tempo is faster than yours — rescue them with the same technique by adding notes (converting parts to triplets/16ths).
5.3 Starting with Rests (休符で印象を変える)
- Eighth-rest opening: delete the first note and replace it with an eighth rest → starting on the offbeat (ウラ拍始まり) = the classic (定番) form of jazz phrasing.
- Rule: produce more offbeat openings than on-beat openings, and the swing feel comes out easily;
- Variant 1: continue straight after the rest (1 note deleted);
- Variant 2: keep 2 beats / 4 notes — open with eighth rest + eighth note + triplet (a stock jazz opening rhythm — must be mastered);
- Variant 3 (slower tempos): squeeze the first half-beat into "eighth rest + sixteenth notes", adding drive to the phrase.
- Quarter-rest opening: a phrase need not start on beat 1:
- Start from beat 2 after the rest (2 notes deleted — the note reduction itself creates rhythmic variety);
- Or, after the rest, compress the original first 4 notes into sixteenths — an especially effective sense of acceleration in slow tunes.
- Caution: feel the rests solidly; do not let the rhythm rush (ハシる).
5.4 Parallel Shifting (平行移動: long rests and crossing barlines)
- Being able to make phrases that cross the barline is a threshold for improvisation to leave beginner level.
- Technique: add a long rest at the phrase head and parallel-shift (平行移動) the whole phrase later in time — starting/ending from different positions, it naturally crosses the barline.
- Theoretical guarantee: in the line method the on-beats are basically in-scale notes, so shifting by 2 beats still works; even if it drifts off the chord tones, as long as it stays in the Key there is almost no awkwardness.
- Shift amount and character:
- Rest 2 beats: still departs from a strong beat (beat 3) — the strong/weak character is unchanged;
- Rest 3 beats: starts from a weak beat (beat 4) → the impression changes completely (floating feel);
- Rest 4 beats: starts from a weak measure (even-numbered measure) → the same phrase shows yet another face.
- Beginners always start phrases from "strong" positions — go back and check where your phrases begin, and use parallel shifting to build the habit of also starting from "weak" positions.
- Shifting within a chord progression: chords and Key stay put while only the phrase slides along the time axis — one piece of material, many different sounds.
5.5 Breathing (息継ぎ) and Long Rests
- Actively insert long rests of 2 beats or more — enough for a genuine breath; the point is to be conscious of breathing:
- Wind players must rest when out of breath (breathing = rests); keyboards/strings can play nonstop, but nonstop ≠ good;
- Listeners breathe along with the player's phrases — phrases that run too long leave the listener "unable to catch a breath", like conversing with someone who never stops talking; gaps are needed.
- The "oishii basho" (オイシイ場所, sweet spot) for long rests = beats 2–3:
- A rest landing on beats 2–3 makes the phrase naturally cross the barline — rest and barline-crossing in one;
- Combine with drawing lines that cross from an even measure into an odd measure for even better effect.
- Beginners rest too little and too briefly (when playing poorly they panic, "want to fill in notes", and dare not rest):
- Playing by the line avoids this: wherever the line isn't drawn, rest with full commitment.
5.6 Long Phrases and Multiple Lines
- The 5-second wall: on fast tunes phrase durations inevitably shrink; short phrases alone leave listeners "underfed" — the faster the tempo, the more long phrases are needed:
- Goal: one phrase ≥5 seconds (tempo 120 ≈ 10 beats / 2.5 measures; tempo 180 ≈ 15 beats / nearly 4 measures);
- First aim for 4–5 measures; step one: build 4+ measures using only eighth notes;
- At slow tempos 5 seconds is easy to reach, but demands solid swing feel — then mix in triplets/16ths for rhythmic variety.
- Within long phrases: align beat 1's on-beat of every measure to a chord tone (longer phrases naturally mean more alignment points); work approach notes in as well.
- Laying out multiple lines (線を複数にする):
- Make lines cross barlines as much as possible — lines all contained within measures = easy to play but boring for the audience; ideally barline-crossing lines are the majority (not every line must cross);
- Starting a line from an even (weak) measure and crossing over reads as cool most easily;
- Vary the lengths: for starters, draw 2 short lines, then 1 long line;
- Each line's rhythm should differ (short lines have few notes and turn monotonous → mix in triplets/16ths; long lines also have room inside for rhythmic ideas).
- Motif (モチーフ):
- A motif = a short fragmentary melody; repeat a memorable melody verbatim several times to give the audience a strong impression and to set up later phrase development;
- Line-drawing knack: draw 2–3 similar short lines with long rests between them — the motif feel (recognizability) is stronger;
- Advanced: draw the motif line itself across barlines, offsetting its measure position at each appearance — repetitive yet never stiff;
- "Developing outward from a motif" is an effective construction method for long solos (motif builds tension, then a long line unleashes it in one stroke).
6. Scale Selection (スケールの使い分け)
6.1 Pentatonic Scale (ペンタトニック・スケール)
- C major pentatonic (Cメジャー・ペンタ) = ド レ ミ ソ ラ (C D E G A);
- A minor pentatonic (Aマイナー・ペンタ) = ラ ド レ ミ ソ (A C D E G) — exactly the same notes as C major pentatonic (relative major/minor share it).
- 5 notes, no half-step motion in the melody → naturally "melodic", suited to singable phrases.
- Rules for drawing lines with pentatonics (since there are only 5 notes):
- Avoid steep ascents and descents (the intervals leap too wide);
- Use flat-flavored lines instead, and deliberately increase repeated notes;
- Adding rhythmic ideas best exploits the pentatonic's strengths (riff-like repetition, e.g. ド ド ラ ド ド ラ ド ド|ラ ド レ ミ ド ラ ソ ミ);
- Gake within flat lines are fine — a gake on the offbeat (ウラ拍) is the classic move for show-off phrases.
- Applied trick: over a C chord, deliberately play "thinking in A minor pentatonic" → the phrase's character changes (darker / more bluesy).
- Weaknesses:
- Extremely effective over triad accompaniment and one-chord (ワン・コード) tunes (smooth jazz / fusion);
- Jazz is full of four-note chords like △7, where the half-step-bearing major scale actually makes cool phrases more easily — pentatonics don't suit the modern-jazz main arena of rapidly changing harmony.
6.2 Blues Scale (ブルース・スケール)
- A blues scale (Aブルース・スケール) = ラ ド レ レ♯ ミ ソ (A C D D♯ E G) = A minor pentatonic + the blue note (ブルーノート) ♯4/♭5.
- Extremely wide usage:
- As long as the root matches, it works over both major and minor chords (A blues works over A7 and also over Am);
- The relative key also works (A blues holds up in an Am tune or a C-major tune);
- The same phrase works over both A7 and C△7, with the blue note レ♯ as passing color.
6.3 The Three Minor Scales (マイナー・スケール) ★ Determined by How the II–V Is Written

- In practice (Dm7–G7(♭5)–C△7): the alteration happens only in the V7 measure — measures 1 and 3 stay completely untouched, and the resolution note lands back on a C△7 chord tone;
- Learning approach: no need to memorize note by note — grasp "same contour, only the V7 measure's characteristic-note slots swapped" and remember the three scales' colors by contrast.
- The harder the scale, the more it must be tamed with a line: difficult scales, when first learned, degenerate most easily into plain up-down runs — draw the line first, then fill notes along it; especially once you can use these scales over lines containing gake, the effect is superb.
7. Kishōtenketsu and Solo Construction (起承転結)
7.1 Concept and Segmentation
7.2 The Four Elements (Phrase-Expression Parameters)
"Building up (盛り上げる) / settling down (落ち着かせる)" is determined by combining 4 elements:
- Register (音域): mostly high register ⇒ heightened; mostly low ⇒ calm — the most decisive of the four;
- Note length (音符の長さ): short 16ths or long half notes — whether it heightens depends on the register it sits in (どちらとも言えない, can go either way);
- Phrase length (フレーズの長さ): long single phrases ⇒ heightened; short phrases with many rests ⇒ calm;
- Variety of notes used (使う音の種類): chromatics etc. ⇒ many note types; pentatonic etc. ⇒ few — the effect likewise depends on register.
- Supplement: dynamics (強弱) is really an element too, but it cannot be expressed by a "line", so it is omitted at the drawing stage.
- Train until you can consciously "create contrast" with the four elements.
7.3 Four Story Templates (4つのストーリー)
Process: fill in the parameter table first → then draw lines → then assign notes. Common point: set only one peak (ピーク).

8.1 Universal Workflow (for any tune)
- Make a scale map: mark each measure's Key/scale (コード進行とKey表, a chord-progression-and-Key table), and find every II–V — including isolated dominant 7ths with the II omitted, and dim7 chords equivalent to V7(♭9);
- Before playing, you only need to grasp each section's "notes with accidentals" first, then construct phrases;
- Decide the overall story (ストーリー) (pick one of the 4 templates or invent your own), and fill the four-element parameter table for ki/shō/ten/ketsu;
- Draw lines per the parameters: unequal sections, barline crossings, weak-measure starts, staggered phrase entries on each staff line;
- Line → notes: apply each measure's scale with its accidentals, using offbeat openings, approach notes, triplets/16ths, and long rests of 2+ beats;
- At modulation points, land the characteristic note on the on-beat (e.g. ファ♯ of a temporary G major, ソ♯ of A harmonic minor):
- This is a deliberate inversion of the "altered notes on offbeats" principle — a key's characteristic note is only heard when it hits the on-beat, maximizing the modulation/chord color.
8.2 Blues (12 measures, F Blues as example)

8.3 Rhythm Changes (32-measure AABA, Key B♭)
The progression of Gershwin's I Got Rhythm, the parent of Charlie Parker's many contrafacts (new tunes written over a borrowed progression):

- D7 → G major scale; G7 → C major; C7 → F major; F7 → B♭ major;
- Changing key signature every 2 measures is difficult — practice each key's scale ahead of time to switch instantly.
- Fast-tune countermeasures (used in the demo):
- Long rests (長い休符): place rests of 2+ beats between phrases for breathing room;
- Mixed on/offbeat openings: offbeat openings are highly effective, but mix in on-beat openings too;
- Long phrases (長いフレーズ): fast tunes suit long phrases — the demo closes with a phrase lasting fully 5 measures.
8.4 II–V Key-Finding (II−V進行と部分転調) ★ The Key to Standards
- Standards almost never run on a single scale from start to finish; the local modulations (部分転調) within a tune are precisely its personality, and they almost always appear as II–V progressions.
- II–V definition: a progression of ○m7→○7 with the root rising a perfect 4th (IIm7→V7).
- Practical procedure:
- Find every IIm7–V7 on the chart;
- Determine which key it belongs to;
- Play that key's scale — after drawing the line, apply that key's accidentals to the line.
- Major II–V → use the major scale of its I key; memorize all 12 for instant recall:

- Danny Boy (entry level, nearly one tonality throughout):
- Almost the entire tune uses only the C major scale; sole exception: the C7 measure temporarily enters F (シ→シ♭, i.e. a C Mixolydian effect);
- At the III–VI–II–V (Em7–A7–Dm7–G7, roots advancing in 4ths): use VI7's (A7's) ド♯ instead of Am7's ド → emphasizes the harmonic motion, more chord feel (コード感);
- Slow tune → no need to stick to eighth notes; well suited to mixing in 16ths and triplets;
- This tune's layout: ki and shō taken long, ten and ketsu short; adjacent sections use direct contrast in "register high/low × note density" to create structural shape (ki = short phrases, many rests, calm entry; shō = lower register, long phrases, chromatics added for complexity; ten = flips to high register with few notes; ketsu = leads to the low register for a calm close).
- But Not For Me (Gershwin, a many-II–V étude, medium tempo):
- Contains 5 major II–Vs: keys E♭, F, G♭, A♭, B♭ — the temporary Key changes almost every 1–2 measures;
- Signature chord F7: where the function calls for E♭△7 (the I), sessions in practice always play F7 (the II7 dominantized) — you must prepare the scale response in advance (F Mixolydian / B♭-major family);
- Section tactics: ki = long phrases of simple notes in the low register; shō = still low but building gake and using many approach notes to raise the note count; ten = high-register short phrases + interspersed rests + solidly placed approach notes; ketsu = heavy use of repeated notes returning to simplicity, shifting to the low register for a quiet close.
- Stella By Starlight (星影のステラ) (the high-difficulty touchstone, medium tempo):
- Home key B♭, but places where the plain B♭ major scale works are few — 9 Keys in total:
- Major II–V ×5: D♭, E♭, F, A♭, B♭;
- Minor II–V ×4: Dm, Gm, Cm, B♭m (form = IIm7(♭5)–V7(♭9));
- It opens with an unresolved minor II–V (Em7♭5–A7♭9 → yet moving to Cm7); take A♭7's scale from D♭ (as its V7); take G7(♭13) from the key of Cm (♭13 = ミ♭ is exactly a Cm-key note);
- The famous closing passage = consecutive descending minor II–Vs: Em7♭5–A7♭9(Dm) → Dm7♭5–G7♭9(Cm) → Cm7♭5–F7(B♭m) → B♭△7;
- Cross-key line connection (this tune's core technique): when the scale changes every 2 measures, deliberately draw the line so it crosses the key-change barline (from the even measure into the odd measure) and plays through continuously;
8.6 Stealing from Stock Phrases (定番フレーズの応用)
The book's principle is drawing your own lines, but advancing requires learning from classic jazz stock phrases (定番フレーズ). Recycling workflow:
- Notate it → extract the line (contour + gake positions + approach-note positions);
- Structure of the sample Parker phrase: Bm7-style ascending arpeggio + chromatic approach pairs (ラ♯→シ, ソ♯→ラ) + scale descent + another ascending arpeggio to close;
- Forget the original phrase and re-play from the line alone, in your own way → you naturally get a phrase "like Parker, but yours";
- Three derivations:
- Vertical parallel shift (低音・高音へ平行移動): move the whole line to a higher/lower register;
- After shifting, no accidental notes on the on-beats (everything lands diatonically; chromatics only on weak positions);
- The line moves while the chords and Key stay put → "carries Parker's shadow, yet with different harmonic color"; the "line shape + approach positions" stay fixed while the pitch level moves;
- Fitting to chord tones (コード・トーンに合わせる): change each chord's first note to a chord tone of that chord;
- Applicable to major II–V (Dm7–G7–C△7), minor II–V (Bm7♭5–E7♭9–Am), 2-beat chord changes (Em7–A7–Dm7–G7–C△7), and other progressions — three versions of one line, each with its own character;
- Offsetting the start (開始をずらす): Parker phrases are mostly conceived at fast tempos; copied verbatim at slow tempos they drag (間延び);
- Add an eighth rest at the head (offbeat opening) / a quarter rest (compressing the front segment into 16ths) / a half rest with the whole phrase shifted 2 beats (ending across the barline).
8.7 The Daily Training Loop
Actually draw lines on blank staff paper → write out your own phrases → practice over backing tracks. Four basic backing progressions:
- C△7 one-chord vamp (16 measures): free line drawing over a single chord (matching the line-shape and note-filling fundamentals);
- Dm7→G7→C△7: the major II–V–I loop;
- Bm7(♭5)→E7→Am: the minor II–V–I loop;
- Dm7→G7→Em7→A7: the II–V–III–VI reverse cycle (finally resolving via Dm7–G7–C△7).
