The Process

Step 2: Verify True Equivalence
Ensure you're comparing truly identical goods. Apparent arbitrage often hides quality differences, transaction costs, or hidden risks.
Equivalence checks:
- Same product specification, SKU, version, condition
- Same delivery timeline and logistics requirements
- Same rights and warranties
- Same underlying asset or exposure
- No hidden costs (taxes, shipping, handling, insurance, currency conversion)
False arbitrage warning: "Buy BTC on exchange A for $30K, sell on exchange B for $30.5K" seems like free money. Hidden costs: transfer fees ($20), withdrawal delays (3 days, price might move), regulatory risk (frozen funds), exchange insolvency risk. Real arbitrage requires accounting for all friction.
Step 3: Calculate Total Transaction Costs
Arbitrage only works if profit exceeds all costs. Many apparent opportunities disappear after accounting for friction.
Cost components:
- Transaction fees: Buying and selling fees, commissions, platform costs
- Transfer costs: Shipping, currency conversion, cross-border taxes
- Time costs: Your time and capital tied up during the transaction
- Opportunity costs: What else could you do with the capital and time?

Profitability threshold: Arbitrage profit must exceed total costs by enough margin to be worth the effort. Finding $5 spreads you can execute once is not a business; finding $0.50 spreads you can execute 10,000 times/day is.
Step 4: Execute Simultaneously to Eliminate Risk
Pure arbitrage requires locking in both sides of the trade at once. Sequential trading (buy first, sell later) introduces price risk - that's speculation, not arbitrage.
Simultaneous execution:

- Real goods: Secure buyer commitment before purchasing supply

Anti-Patterns
"I'll buy now and sell when prices rise": That's speculation (directional bet), not arbitrage (locked-in spread).
"The spread is huge, so profit is huge": Spread minus total costs equals profit. Most big spreads have big hidden costs.
"This arbitrage opportunity will last forever": Pure arbitrage is competed away. Plan for opportunity to shrink or disappear.
"I'll just manually check prices and trade": Human arbitrage doesn't scale and can't compete with algorithms. Need systems or structural advantages.
"Buying low and selling high is arbitrage": Only if you lock in both sides simultaneously with no price risk. Otherwise it's trading.
"I found a price gap, so I'll take out a loan to max profit": Leverage turns small risks into catastrophic ones. True risk-free arbitrage exists, but most "arbitrage" has hidden risks.
