Key Design Patterns
- Symlinks for self-linting:
.ruff.toml -> config/ruff.toml and .yamllint -> config/yamllint.yaml so the repo lints itself with the same configs it ships
- Three-tier config discovery: (1) explicit config path via variables, (2) auto-discovery in standard locations, (3) fallback to shared configs in
$HOME/.config/
- Multi-arch builds: Native builds on amd64 (
aipcc-small-x86_64) and arm64 (aipcc-small-aarch64) runners, combined into multi-arch manifests
- OpenShift compatibility: UID 1001, GID 0 ownership,
g=u permissions for arbitrary UID support
- GitLab API integration: MR/commit linter uses GitLab API for accurate commit lists, with git-log fallback
Review Focus Areas
1. Containerfile Changes
Required:
- Base image must be a Red Hat UBI image (currently
ubi10/nodejs-22)
- All linter versions must be pinned with
ARG for Renovate tracking: ARG RUFF_VERSION=X.Y.Z, ARG YAMLLINT_VERSION=X.Y.Z, ARG RENOVATE_VERSION=X.Y.Z
- Files must be owned by
1001:0 with g=u permissions for OpenShift SCC compatibility
- Workspace must be
/workspace, home must be /home/linter
- Container must run as non-root user (USER 1001)
- Config files go to
/home/linter/.config/, scripts to /home/linter/.scripts/, Makefile to /home/linter/Makefile
Anti-patterns:
- Running as root in the final image
- Hardcoding linter versions inline instead of using ARG
- Missing
--no-cache-dir on pip install
- Adding unnecessary packages that bloat the image
- Breaking the
COPY --chown=1001:0 pattern
- Using
USER root without switching back to USER 1001
2. MR/Commit Linter (scripts/mr_commit_linter.py)
Required:
- All validation functions must return
ValidationResult dataclass (not raw booleans or strings)
- Error messages must include the commit ID prefix:
ERROR [COMMIT {commit_id}]: or ERROR [MERGE REQUEST {iid}]:
- Error messages must reference
POLICY_MESSAGE with the guidelines URL
- Title format enforcement:
TICKET-123: Description with exactly one space after colon, no space before colon
- Description must be >= 10 characters OR >= 3 words (constants:
MIN_TITLE_DESCRIPTION_LENGTH, MIN_TITLE_DESCRIPTION_WORDS)
- Commit body must have >= 3 lines (
MIN_COMMIT_BODY_LINES)
- JIRA pattern accepts any 2+ uppercase letter project key:
[A-Z]{2,}-\d+
- Merge commits (2+ parents) and cherry-picked merge commits must be skipped
- Bot exemption for
platform-engineering-bot and aipcc-cicd-bot (BOT_NAMES list)
linterignore file search order: $HOME/.config/linterignore -> config/linterignore -> .linterignore
- Text files must end with newline at EOF (skip binary, symlinks, directories, deleted files)
- GitLab API calls must have timeout (currently 10s) and graceful error handling
- Base SHA priority:
CI_MERGE_REQUEST_DIFF_BASE_SHA > LINT_BASE_BRANCH > "main"
Anti-patterns:
- Raising exceptions instead of returning
ValidationResult.fail()
- Calling
sys.exit() in validation functions (only allowed in find_linterignore_file and git command failures)
- Missing error handling for
requests calls or subprocess calls
- Hardcoding JIRA project keys instead of using the generic
[A-Z]{2,} pattern
- Not skipping merge commits during validation
- Modifying
BOT_NAMES, LINTERIGNORE_PATHS, or regex patterns without updating tests
3. Unit Tests (tests/test_mr_commit_linter.py)
Required:
- Tests must use
pytest with pytest-mock for mocking
- Test classes organized by feature area (e.g.,
TestPatternMatching, TestValidateTitleFormat, TestMergeCommit)
- Git commands must be mocked via
@patch('scripts.mr_commit_linter.run_git_command')
- API calls must be mocked via
@patch('scripts.mr_commit_linter.requests.get')
- File system tests should use
tmp_path pytest fixture
- Imports must come from
scripts.mr_commit_linter (module path)
- Every validation function should have both success and failure test cases
- Parametrized tests for pattern matching (
@pytest.mark.parametrize)
Anti-patterns:
- Testing with real git commands or API calls (everything external must be mocked)
- Missing test for new validation rules or changed behavior
- Tests that depend on specific file system state outside

4. Makefile Changes
Required:
- All linter targets must be declared
.PHONY
linter-central must depend on all individual linter targets: linter-ruff-check linter-yamllint linter-renovate linter-mr-commit
- Config auto-discovery logic: check for local config files first, fall back to
$HOME/.config/ shared configs
- Error messages must use
echo "ERROR: ..." pattern
- Variables must use
?= for overridability: RUFF_CONFIG ?=, YAMLLINT_CONFIG ?=, etc.
- The
mr_commit_linter is invoked as: python3 $$HOME/.scripts/mr_commit_linter.py
Anti-patterns:
- Breaking the three-tier config discovery cascade
- Removing
--no-cache from ruff args (default: check . --no-cache)
- Not quoting variables in shell conditionals
- Missing
|| (echo "ERROR: ..." && exit 1) error handling pattern
5. GitLab CI/CD Pipeline (.gitlab-ci.yml)
Required:
- Pipeline stages must be:
build -> lint -> test -> push
- Build jobs must use native runners:
aipcc-small-x86_64 for amd64, aipcc-small-aarch64 for arm64
- Lint job must use the newly built image (not
:latest) to validate config changes within the same MR
- CI environment variables must be passed to the lint container:
CI_PROJECT_ID, CI_MERGE_REQUEST_IID, CI_API_V4_URL, CI_MERGE_REQUEST_TITLE, CI_MERGE_REQUEST_DESCRIPTION, CI_MERGE_REQUEST_DIFF_BASE_SHA, GITLAB_API_TOKEN, GITLAB_USER_LOGIN, GITLAB_USER_NAME
- Push job rules: only on default branch and tags
:latest tag must only be pushed on default branch (not on tags)
- Tag versions (
:v0.1.0) must only be pushed when $CI_COMMIT_TAG is set
- Images use GitLab container registry as intermediate storage during the pipeline
- Vault authentication for Quay credentials (
vault_auth helper)
- Default rules (
.default_rules): MR events, default branch, tags
Anti-patterns:
- Using
:latest image for lint/test jobs instead of the newly built commit-SHA image
- Pushing
:latest on tag pipelines (would make backport tags become "latest")
- Missing
needs: dependencies that would break pipeline ordering
- Removing CI environment variable passthrough to lint container
- Using
--cap-add IPC_LOCK unnecessarily outside vault operations
- Missing
|| true on git fetch origin main:main (may fail on tag pipelines)
6. CI Template (templates/linter-central.yml)
Required:
- Must use
spec: inputs: for customizable stage (default: lint)
- Image tag must match the git tag version (kept in sync by
release.sh)
- Runner tag must be
aipcc-k8s-cicd (Kubernetes runner for client repos)
- Must skip Draft MRs:

Anti-patterns:
- Changing the image tag without updating
release.sh to match
- Using non-Kubernetes runner tags (client repos run on shared k8s runners)
- Removing the Draft skip rule
7. Shared Linter Configs (config/)
Required:
ruff.toml: Must select E (pycodestyle) and F (pyflakes) rules, ignore E501 (line too long)
yamllint.yaml: Must extend default, line-length at warning level (max 120), document-start: disable, truthy: disable, comments: disable
linterignore: Lists files allowed for INTERNAL commits; must NOT include config/linterignore itself
- Changes to shared configs affect ALL client repos using the container (high impact)
Anti-patterns:
- Making line-length an error instead of warning (breaks many repos)
- Enabling
document-start or truthy rules (too strict for general use)
- Adding project-specific rules to shared configs (they should stay generic)
- Adding
config/linterignore to the linterignore allowlist
8. Release Process (release.sh)
Required:
- Version format must match
vX.Y.Z or vX.Y
- Script must check for uncommitted changes before proceeding
- Script must check if tag already exists
- Must update image version in
templates/linter-central.yml
- Must create a signed-off commit and git tag
Anti-patterns:
- Changing the version format validation regex
- Adding files to the
FILES array without verifying they contain version strings
- Removing the uncommitted changes check
9. Renovate Configuration (renovate.json)
Required:
- Must extend
local>redhat/rhel-ai/renovate-config (shared org config)
- Custom managers must target
Containerfile for version extraction
- Each
ARG *_VERSION= must have a corresponding regex manager
- Datasources: ruff ->
github-releases (astral-sh/ruff), yamllint -> pypi, renovate -> npm
- Base image version must be constrained with
allowedVersions
Anti-patterns:
- Removing the shared config extension
- Using wrong datasource for a dependency
- Missing
extractVersionTemplate for GitHub releases that use v prefix
10. Cross-Cutting Concerns
Required:
- All text files must end with a newline at EOF
- YAML files must pass yamllint with the shared config
- Python code must pass ruff with the shared config
- Symlinks
.ruff.toml and .yamllint must point to their respective config/ files
- No secrets, tokens, or credentials in any committed files
Anti-patterns:
- Breaking the symlink targets (e.g., renaming config files without updating symlinks)
- Adding Python dependencies without adding them to
Containerfile pip install
- Adding new scripts without corresponding test coverage
- Changing file paths in
Containerfile COPY without updating Makefile references
Review Output Format
When reviewing changes, organize feedback as:
- Critical -- issues that would break functionality, security, or CI pipeline
- Important -- issues that affect correctness, maintainability, or user experience
- Suggestions -- improvements to code quality, performance, or readability
For each issue, include:
- The file and line(s) affected
- What is wrong and why it matters
- A specific fix or recommendation
Keep feedback concise. Do not comment on things that are correct and working well unless they deserve specific praise for solving a tricky problem.
