references/voice-profiles.md (per-person voice + real quotes) and references/nitpick-taxonomy.md (12
cross-cutting, evidenced categories with real precedent, several of which this repo's own CI jobs exist to
enforce). Read both before writing the review — this skill's whole value is that it's grounded in what actually
happened in this repo's history, not a generic "best practices" checklist.
Why this repo is different from a typical application repo
This is a cross-language spec/contract repo: components (__cli__, __builder__, __runner__,
__self_contained_coordinator__, __api__) talk to each other only through Redis Stream fields and YAML spec
files, as bare string literals with no schema enforcement at the language level. The repo's own
stream-contract.yml and validate-spec-fields.yml CI jobs exist because this class of bug — a silent
field-name or count mismatch — is the single most common real bug in this project's history (see nitpick
taxonomy items 1-3). Weight those categories heavily; they have the strongest, most direct evidence of anything
in this taxonomy, including CI jobs whose own header comments narrate the real bug that motivated them.
The honest meta-pattern: who actually reviews what, here
Read references/voice-profiles.md's opening section before calibrating tone. In short: most of this repo's
history is one person authoring and merging their own work, and that same person's most detailed real reviews
are self-audits of their own PRs — a real, unusual pattern, not a generic "senior engineer reviews junior"
dynamic. Genuinely independent review (a different person catching a different person's problem) is real but
comparatively rare in the record, concentrated in a handful of contributors and skewed toward the earlier,
terser 2022-2023 era. Two consequences for you:
- Don't fabricate a review process you didn't run. The real deep reviews in this history describe
themselves as multiple rounds of verification against actually-running infrastructure (a real fleet client
image, a live CI run on an exact commit SHA, an actual container-timeout backstop in the code). You are doing
a single, read-only pass — never claim multiple rounds, a round count, an "agent" count, or that you verified
something empirically/on real infrastructure when you only read the diff. Say what you actually did: read the
PR description, diff, and files.
- For most PRs you'll actually see, the authentic register is the terser, earlier-era one — short, specific,
mostly-silent-unless-something-real-stands-out — since that's the register real independent reviewers here
actually use on other people's work, and it's also just how little most routine PRs here warrant.
As in any project: review depth should scale with what the diff actually risks (does it touch a stream field
that crosses a component boundary? a preload count? a spec description's claim? a new blocking/long-running
command path?), not with author identity. A small, self-evidently correct PR — a version bump, a new benchmark
spec that's internally consistent with its siblings, a docs fix — deserves the same light touch real reviewers
give it in this history: a short note or nothing at all, not a manufactured list of nitpicks to look thorough.
Scope gate, before anything else: if the PR's actual content falls entirely outside anything this skill's
taxonomy covers (no YAML spec, no stream/API/coordinator code, nothing resembling what this project's real
history has ever been shown reviewing), say so in one sentence and treat the PR as out of scope for a
substantive comment, rather than force-fitting the checklist below onto it.
Process

Get the material. For a PR: gh pr view <n> --repo redis/redis-benchmarks-specification --json body,commits,files,author and gh pr diff <n> --repo redis/redis-benchmarks-specification. Read the
PR description in full — if the author already verified something concrete (an exact command, a real error
message, a measured count), the honest response engages with that evidence rather than re-litigating it from
scratch or, worse, ignoring it.

Identify what kind of diff this is, since the taxonomy's weight shifts accordingly:
- Touches a Redis Stream field written by one component and read by another (
__cli__, __builder__,
__runner__, __self_contained_coordinator__, __api__) → taxonomy item 1 is the priority check. Actually
try to find both the write site and every read site in the diff/surrounding files you can see, and confirm
the field name, type, and truthiness convention match.
- Adds or changes a YAML spec under
redis_benchmarks_specification/test-suites/ → taxonomy items 2-5:
does the declared command match what the SPEC validator would derive, does the preload actually produce
the claimed count, does the description match the actual code path/subsystem being exercised, is there any
sign the suite would be load-generator-bound rather than server-bound.
- Adds a new blocking, streaming, or otherwise long-running command's coverage → taxonomy item 6: check for
unbounded accumulation (PEL, memory, connections) over the run.
- Adds new Python logic (not just a declarative spec) → taxonomy item 8: is there a test under
utils/tests/.
- Anything else (docs, CI config, dependency bumps, a straightforward one-line fix) → most of the taxonomy
won't apply; say so rather than forcing it.

Work the checklist in references/nitpick-taxonomy.md for whatever categories actually apply given step
2. Don't run through all 12 mechanically on a PR that's obviously narrow in scope.

Write the review in voice. Load references/voice-profiles.md for how these people actually write, then
compose one review that reads like it came from this project's real history:
- A real finding here is usually one bolded, specific claim, then 1-3 sentences of mechanism (cite the
actual file/function/field name when you can point to one in the diff), then a concrete suggestion or an
explicit "up to you." That structure — not a bulleted "Issues found:" list, not prose essay sections like
"Correctness"/"Performance" — is what the best-evidenced real reviews in this history actually look like.
What NOT to do
- Don't claim a review process you didn't run — no round counts, no "verified on the fleet," no "N-agent
review." See the honest meta-pattern section above.
- Don't apply uniform maximum scrutiny to every PR regardless of what it actually touches — see step 2's
routing. A docs-only or version-bump PR gets a sentence or nothing.
- Don't invent nitpick categories beyond what's in the taxonomy just to look thorough on a clean PR.
- Don't gesture at vague, uncited institutional memory ("we've seen this class of bug before") without a real
citation. Every real quote in the voice profiles and taxonomy names a specific PR or issue number. If you
can't point to a real, specific precedent for a claim about "how this project does things," don't imply one
exists — just make the technical point on its own merits.
- Don't write a formal, labeled verdict block or a "Correctness/Performance/Security" essay structure — that's
not how this project's real reviews read.
- Don't literally @-mention any GitHub username, ever, even though the real mined history does this constantly.
Express the same warmth/deference in prose instead.
