SkyyRose Social — Reddit Strategy
When to Use This Skill
- Building SkyyRose's Reddit presence in streetwear, fashion, and Oakland community subreddits
- Creating value-first posting guidelines that build credibility without triggering spam filters
- Identifying target subreddits where SkyyRose's audience is actively engaged
- Using Reddit for market research — understanding what streetwear buyers actually say about brands, price points, and quality
- Planning Corey's founder voice on Reddit in a way that feels authentic, not promotional
DO NOT use this skill for:
- Spam, vote manipulation, or disguised advertising — Reddit communities detect and ban inauthentic behavior immediately
- Posting drop announcements as lead content — Reddit is not a broadcast channel
- Expecting fast results — Reddit brand-building is a 60-90 day minimum investment before meaningful return
Brand Canon (non-negotiable)
- Corey's register is the only register. Reddit communities are allergic to brand voice. Corey — as a person, an Oakland founder, a Black designer — is the account identity. Never write as "SkyyRose the brand". Write as Corey.
- No hype-merchant tone. "🔥 CHECK OUT OUR DROP 🔥" gets downvoted and banned instantly. Reddit's culture rewards specificity, honesty, and genuine contribution. Corey's earned, direct Oakland voice is exactly what Reddit responds to.
- Tagline is never the opener.
Luxury Grows from Concrete. belongs in Corey's profile bio, not in the first line of a subreddit comment. It's earned context, not an intro.
- Product naming if products come up: Always by name. "BLACK Rose Crewneck" not "br-001". In community discussions, product names are natural; SKUs read like marketing copy.
- The 90/10 rule is SkyyRose canon. 90% genuine value contribution. 10% — at most — content that links to SkyyRose. Violating this is a Reddit ban and a brand reputation hit.

Phase 1: Brief
Required Inputs
| Input | What to Confirm | Default |
|---|
| Account identity | Will Corey post personally, or will there be a brand account? | Personal Corey account preferred |
| Primary goal | Brand awareness, market research, community, or traffic to skyyrose.co? | Market research + community first |
| Time budget | How many hours/week for Reddit engagement? | 2-3 hours/week |
| Reddit experience | Has Corey or the team used Reddit before? Existing account? | Assume starting fresh |
| Content assets | Any existing posts, essays, or behind-the-scenes content that could become text posts? | Pull from founder interview materials |
GATE: Confirm account strategy before proceeding. If starting fresh, the first 4 weeks are contribution-only. No self-promotion before 500 comment karma and consistent positive engagement history.
Phase 2: Outline
1. Subreddit Research — target communities and their rules
2. Account Building (Weeks 1-4) — credibility before content
3. Content Strategy — what to post, comment, and contribute
4. Self-Promotion Guidelines — how to share SkyyRose without getting banned
5. Market Research — using Reddit to understand the streetwear buyer
6. 90-Day Timeline
GATE: Approve outline before full strategy.
Phase 3: Write
1. Target Subreddits
Primary (highest audience overlap + self-promo allowed):
| Subreddit | Size | Relevance | Self-Promo Rules | Priority |
|---|
| r/streetwear | 5M+ | Core audience — streetwear buyers and enthusiasts | Strict — no links, but WAYWT threads welcome | Primary |
| r/malefashionadvice | 5M+ | Style advice community, gear-focused | Very strict — no brand promotion | Research only |
| r/femalefashionadvice | 1M+ | Women's style — relevant for Love Hurts/Signature/Kids | Strict — no brand promotion | Research only |
| r/Entrepreneur | 1M+ | Founder content — Corey's story plays well here | Moderate — founder stories encouraged if authentic | Primary — storytelling |
| r/smallbusiness | 800K | Small business community | Moderate — process and story posts welcome | Secondary |
| r/BlackBusinesses | 50K+ | Black-owned business directory and support | Lenient — Black-owned brand listings welcomed | Primary — list SKyyRose |
Secondary (Oakland / Bay Area anchor):
| Subreddit | Size | Relevance | Self-Promo | Priority |
|---|
| r/oakland | 60K+ | Oakland community — local pride | Moderate — local business posts OK with context | Primary |
| r/bayarea | 350K+ | Bay Area community | Moderate — local business OK occasionally | Secondary |
| r/CaliforniaFashion | Small | California-specific fashion | Lenient — relevant posts welcomed | Secondary |
Research-only (never post, only observe):
| Subreddit | Why to Monitor |
|---|
| r/streetwear | What WAYWT (What Are You Wearing Today) photos get upvoted — composition, lighting, community values |
| r/malefashionadvice | Price point conversations, quality expectations, brand comparisons |
| r/femalefashionadvice | Women's styling discussions, what quality signals they look for |
| r/Frugal_Jerk | Streetwear from a value lens — understand the anti-hype counter-position |
| r/fashionreps | Understand the replica market to see what "luxury" signals matter to buyers |
2. Account Building (Weeks 1-4)
RULE: Do NOT share any SkyyRose content, links, or mentions for the first 4 weeks.
Week 1-2 — Lurk and Learn:
- Subscribe to all target subreddits
- Read the top posts from the past year in each subreddit
- Study what gets upvoted: specificity, honesty, showing actual knowledge
- Read the sidebar rules and wiki for every target subreddit
- Note what gets downvoted: vague promotion, fake engagement, self-promotion
Week 3-4 — Start Contributing:
- Answer 3-5 genuine questions per week in streetwear/fashion subreddits
→ Style advice questions Corey can answer from real experience
→ Quality vs. price questions from the founder perspective
→ "What independent brand should I check out" threads — answer with other brands
before SkyyRose is established enough to be mentioned naturally
- Comment on Oakland/Bay Area threads with genuine local knowledge
- Share a genuine perspective on a fashion industry discussion (not SkyyRose-related)
Karma target before first SkyyRose mention: 500+ comment karma
3. Content Strategy
Text posts (highest trust, highest upvote potential):
Corey as a founder can post:
- "I built a luxury streetwear brand from Oakland — here's what nobody
tells you about independent fashion" (r/Entrepreneur, r/smallbusiness)
- "How I learned to price my clothing brand without undervaluing the work"
(r/Entrepreneur)
- "What I've learned about running limited-run drops as an independent brand"
(r/streetwear — after credibility is established)
- "WAYWT" (What Are You Wearing Today) posts in r/streetwear with SkyyRose
pieces — these are accepted and normal in the community
Comments (primary engagement tool):
Answer questions specifically and helpfully:
- "What do you look for in an independent streetwear brand?" →
Answer with real criteria (fabric quality, production transparency, brand story)
then mention that these are the same standards SkyyRose holds itself to —
only after the answer is complete and stands on its own
- "Anyone from Oakland/Bay Area in here?" →
Contribute to the conversation genuinely before mentioning SkyyRose at all
- Quality/material questions →
Answer from knowledge, not promotion. Corey knows construction.
That knowledge earns trust.
What NEVER to post:
- "Check out my brand SkyyRose!" cold posts
- Comments that exist solely to drop a link
- The same link in multiple subreddits simultaneously
- Anything that sounds like marketing copy
4. Self-Promotion Guidelines (Month 2+)
The 90/10 Rule: For every 1 link to SkyyRose, there must be 9 non-promotional contributions.
How to share SkyyRose content without getting banned:
Method 1 — Answer first, link second:
"[Full, standalone answer to the question]. I've worked through this in
building my own brand — wrote about the process at [link] if that's useful,
but the short answer is above."
Method 2 — WAYWT post:
Post a genuine "What Are You Wearing Today" photo featuring SkyyRose pieces.
These are the accepted way to share clothing in r/streetwear.
Tag the pieces if asked. Let the product speak.
Method 3 — Founder story as value:
In r/Entrepreneur or r/smallbusiness, share the SkyyRose founding story
as a case study or lesson. The brand is the example, not the promotion.
Include a brief mention of skyyrose.co at the end — not in the opener.
Method 4 — r/BlackBusinesses listing:
Post SkyyRose as a Black-owned business in subreddits that explicitly welcome
these listings. Direct, honest, appropriate to the community's purpose.
Format for linking SkyyRose content:
[2-3 paragraphs of genuine, standalone insight or story]
[Brief acknowledgment that it connects to your own work]:
"This is something I think about constantly running SkyyRose —
a Black-owned streetwear brand out of Oakland. Happy to answer
questions about how we approach this."
[Link only if it adds direct value to the thread, not as a footer]
5. Market Research
Reddit is the best free market research tool for understanding what streetwear buyers actually think — unfiltered.
Research framework:
| Question | Where to Look | What to Extract |
|---|
| What do buyers value in independent streetwear? | r/streetwear, r/malefashionadvice | Specific quality signals, deal-breakers |
| What price points feel fair vs. excessive? | r/malefashionadvice, r/Frugal_Jerk | Price sensitivity by category (crewneck, jacket, jogger) |
| How do buyers discover small brands? | r/streetwear discovery threads | Word-of-mouth channels, WAYWT influence |
| What do they say about Black-owned brands? | r/BlackBusinesses, r/streetwear | Perception of Black luxury fashion, purchasing intent |
| What Oakland/Bay Area fashion conversation exists? | r/oakland, r/bayarea | Local style discussions, brand mentions |
| What anti-hype sentiment exists? | r/fashionreps, r/Frugal_Jerk | What makes buyers distrust "luxury" claims |
Research template — track findings:
| Thread Title | Subreddit | Upvotes | Key Quote | SkyyRose Implication |
|-------------|-----------|---------|-----------|----------------------|
| "How much would you pay for a quality crewneck?" | r/malefashionadvice | 847 | "Anything over $80 better have a clear reason" | Price communication needs to explain construction cost |
| "Best Black-owned streetwear brands?" | r/streetwear | 312 | "The ones I trust show the production process" | BTS content = trust signal |
Use Reddit search on Google: site:reddit.com "luxury streetwear" "independent brand" to find threads you can't find through Reddit's own search.
6. 90-Day Timeline
Month 1 — Credibility Foundation (zero SkyyRose mentions)
- Subscribe and lurk: r/streetwear, r/Entrepreneur, r/oakland, r/malefashionadvice
- 3-5 genuine comments/week in your area of knowledge: fashion, production, founder experience
- Track: what language does the streetwear community use for quality? price? "luxury"?
- Run the Research Framework table — document 20+ findings
Month 2 — First Contributions (rare, high-quality SkyyRose mentions)
- First WAYWT post in r/streetwear with a SkyyRose piece — let the product stand
- Post a founder story in r/Entrepreneur: "What I learned building an independent fashion brand"
- List SkyyRose in r/BlackBusinesses if appropriate thread exists
- Continue 3-5 comments/week — still 90% unrelated to SkyyRose
Month 3 — Consistent Value + Occasional Content
- One substantive text post per month in a relevant subreddit
- WAYWT posts 1-2x/month in r/streetwear
- Answer quality and pricing questions with founder knowledge — mention SkyyRose only when organic
- Total ratio check: count contributions vs. SkyyRose mentions. Must be 9:1 or better.
Phase 4: Polish

Example: Corey's First Month on Reddit
Week 3 — First genuine comment (r/streetwear, quality discussion thread):
Someone asks: "What actually makes a streetwear crewneck worth $100+"
Corey's reply (contribution-first, no SkyyRose mention yet):
"Weight of the fabric is the first tell — 400gsm+ versus the 280gsm most
fast-fashion pieces use. You'll feel it the moment you pick it up.
Second is finish quality — look at the interior seams. On a piece that's
actually built to last, the interior is as clean as the exterior. Serging
that's pulling or fraying after one wash tells you everything.
Third is embroidery depth — dense fill stitching versus just an outline.
One lasts indefinitely. One starts lifting after 10 washes.
The price that makes those things viable for an independent brand is usually
$85-120 for a crewneck. Anything cheaper on the independent side either
cuts corners on fabric weight or pays their people badly."
[No link. No mention. Just knowledge. This gets upvoted.]
Month 2 — First WAYWT post (r/streetwear):
Post: [Photo of BLACK Rose Crewneck on Corey, Oakland background]
Caption:
"WAYWT — BLACK Rose Crewneck from my brand, SkyyRose. Based in Oakland,
California. Black-owned, limited run. This piece is heavyweight (420gsm)
with embroidered chest detail.
Built it because I wanted something that matched what I was seeing out of
the town but couldn't find at any price point that made sense."
[Comment if asked about the piece. Answer specifically. Link to product
if someone directly asks where to buy.]
Anti-Patterns
- Posting SkyyRose on day one — Any new account that posts a link or brand mention immediately gets flagged as spam. The credibility window is real. Do not skip it.
- "Hey check out my brand" cold posts — This is the single fastest path to a ban and a reputation hit across multiple subreddits. Reddit's social memory is long.
- Dropping links without full context — Reddit hates naked links. Provide the complete insight in the post itself. The link is supplementary, not the product.
- Marketing voice in contributions — Corey writing "Luxury streetwear that elevates your wardrobe..." in a comment is detectable as brand copy within one sentence. Write as a person.
- Cross-posting the same link to 5 subreddits in one day — This is flagged as spam by Reddit's algorithm and manually by moderators. One link, one subreddit at a time, days apart.
- Arguing with critics or negative comments — Reddit amplifies confrontation. If someone criticizes SkyyRose or the price point, respond once with genuine perspective. Then let it stand.
- Expecting sales from Reddit — Reddit builds market awareness and research capacity. Direct sales conversions are rare and not the metric. Trust-building and competitor intelligence are the ROI.
Recovery
- Account shadowbanned: Create a new account. Start fresh. The only fix is a clean account and a genuine contribution approach. Don't try to "fix" a shadowbanned account.
- Post removed by moderators: Message the moderators politely, ask which rule was violated, thank them, and adjust. Never argue. Most moderators are fair if approached respectfully.
- Zero traction on text posts: Reddit rewards detail, specificity, and genuine usefulness. Generic posts ("5 tips for independent fashion brands") get ignored. Specific posts ("Here's what I learned when our first production run came back wrong") get upvoted.
- Getting hostile responses to brand mentions: This is often an early sign that the contribution ratio isn't at 9:1 yet. Step back, increase non-promotional contributions for 2 weeks, then return to occasional mentions.
- Taking too much time: Reduce to 2-3 target subreddits only. Set a hard 30-minute daily timer. Quality comments beat volume every time on Reddit.
