Historiography Positioning (ahr-historiography-positioning)
For the AHR, the historiographical intervention is the contribution. An article is not "here is
what I found in the archive" — it is "historians have understood X this way; the evidence shows it is
better understood this other way." Positioning is therefore not throat-clearing; it is the spine of the
article.
When to trigger
- Drafting or revising the introduction and the "what this changes" passage
- A reader said you "don't engage the literature" or "missed the obvious work"
- Your archival findings are strong but you cannot say what they revise
- Distinguishing your argument from the closest prior interpretations
How the AHR wants historiography engaged
- Name the conversation, not a citation pile. Identify the live interpretive debate or the
reigning account your article speaks to. Cite the works that define it.
- State the intervention precisely. Not "little has been written" — say what the prevailing
reading gets wrong, flattens, omits, or misperiodizes, and how your evidence revises it.
- Two audiences at once. Satisfy specialists (you command the field) and generalists (why it
matters to historians elsewhere). Avoid insider shorthand that locks others out.
- Be fair to your predecessors. Represent prior interpretations accurately; the strongest
interventions revise serious work, not strawmen.
- Locate yourself in historiographical turns where relevant — social, cultural, transnational,
global, environmental, the history of knowledge — without genuflecting to fashion.

Worked vignette: relocating an intervention
Imagine a manuscript on enslaved litigants in a colonial Spanish-American court. A first draft positions
it as "the first study of these particular case files" — a recovery framing that reads, to a generalist,
as local and self-justifying. Relocated as an intervention, the same archive speaks to a live debate:
historians have treated colonial legal personhood as a settled exclusion, and these suits show enslaved
people using the courts as a recognized strategy, which forces a revision of how we periodize the reach of
imperial law. Now the closest rival reading (that such suits were exceptional and tolerated, not
structural) is named and answered with the frequency and outcomes in the files, and a historian of an
entirely different empire can see the stakes: how subordinated actors made law work. The recovery becomes
a reframing with a clear "what it changes" sentence.
Calibration anchors
- The historiographic-stakes bar at the AHR is satisfied when a historian who never works on your region
or period grasps, in one sentence, what your article revises.
- Distinguish revision, reframing, recovery, synthesis, and reperiodization, and claim only the one
the evidence supports — over-claiming the intervention type is itself a referee target.
- The AHR's broad chronological and geographic remit means your conversation partners may sit far from your
archive; positioning that engages only the nearest five specialists usually reads as too narrow (confirm
scope expectations against the journal's current submission guidelines).
