Cracking a slab can damage the card. Risk model: hairline scratch -1 to -2 grades; edge nick -1 grade; fingerprint cleanable.
Mechanical risks
- Hairline scratch from improper crack tool: -1 to -2 grades
- Edge nick from prying: -1 grade
- Corner ding from holder fragment: -1 grade
- Fingerprint smudge if handled bare: -0.5 (often cleanable)
- Bend from holder release: -2 to -3 grades (severe)
Crack-tool selection
- PSA slab cracker (precision lever) — best for PSA holders
- BGS slab cracker — for BGS holders
- Holder-break tool — universal but riskier
- Pliers / DIY — avoid; high damage risk

Damage risk: probability × value-loss
