Newsletter Design Patterns
Newsletter design depends on cadence. Weekly newsletters need scannable structure. Monthly digests can be longer.
Single-topic vs multi-topic
Single-topic (one deep story per issue) — better for thought leadership. Multi-topic (5-7 short items) — better for digests.
Header
Newsletter name + edition number + date. Optional banner image (recognizable across issues). Consistent across editions.
Sub-sections
If multi-topic: each section has its own header, 1-2 paragraphs, 'Read more →' link. Visual separation (rule, padding, color).
Archive
Link to web version + archive of past issues. Important for SEO + new subscriber browsing.
Cadence sustainability
Weekly hard to sustain. Monthly easier. Pick what you can ACTUALLY produce 12 months in a row.
Common mistakes
Inconsistent design across issues. No archive link. Newsletter looks like marketing pitch (not editorial). No clear 'what's new this week' framing.
