Pricing Strategy Display
How pricing is shown matters as much as what it is.
Price anchoring
The first price the user sees frames everything after. Strategies:
- Show a strikethrough of a previous higher price (works for promo)
- Show a comparison ("vs $130K hire") next to your price
- Show ROI math ("Saves $X/year") inline
- Show the highest tier first (makes middle tier look like a deal)
Tier ordering
Three valid orderings:
| Order | Effect |
|---|
| Free → Starter → Pro → Enterprise | User chooses up; anchors low |
| Enterprise → Pro → Starter → Free | User chooses down; anchors high |
| Pro centered, others around | Featured tier emphasized |
For SaaS, left-to-right ascending with Pro highlighted is the default winner.
Currency display
- $79/mo (concise)
- $79/month (longer; rarely needed)
- $79 USD/mo (only for international audiences)
- $948/yr (annual, when annual-only)
Don't switch between formats across tiers.
Monthly vs annual
Annual pricing should:
- Show savings explicitly ("Save 15% — save $X/year")
- Display monthly equivalent ("$199/mo billed annually as $2,388")
- Make the toggle prominent (not buried)
- Default to annual (anchors higher recurring revenue + signals commitment)
"Most popular" / featured tier
The featured tier should be:
- Visually distinct (border, scale, background)
- Labeled clearly ("Most popular", "Best value", "Recommended")
- Pre-selected if there's a primary CTA
Anchoring with Enterprise
If you have an Enterprise / contact-sales tier, even WITHOUT showing a price, it anchors expectations higher.
Pattern: "Enterprise" tile with no price, just "Talk to us" CTA.
ROI calculator
For products with measurable ROI (cost savings, time savings), inline calculators win.
Pattern:
- Two sliders (e.g., "Trucks" + "Drivers")
- Output: Recommended tier + savings vs alternative
- "Start free →" CTA right below
X3 Compass uses this with a 25-truck default showing $126K savings.
Trust signals on pricing page
Add to pricing page (often missing):
- "30-day money-back guarantee"
- "Cancel anytime"
- "No card required for free tier"
- "All prices in USD"
- Customer logos
- 1-2 testimonials specific to value/price
Common mistakes
- Pricing buried below "talk to us" form
- Toggle annual/monthly but show only annual savings (where's monthly?)
- "Custom" pricing for entire enterprise tier (no signal)
- Featured tier looks identical to others
- No comparison context (user can't tell if $X is good)
Where this fits in X3 Compass
X3 Compass uses strikethrough $130K anchor, ROI calculator with 25-truck default, 5-tier display with Pro featured, Partner tier visually segregated (violet vs teal).
