Value Proposition Design
A great value proposition is a single sentence that:
- Names what the product is
- For whom
- The unique angle vs alternatives
If you can't write it in one sentence, the value prop isn't clear.
The value prop equation
[Product noun] is the [category] for [audience] — [unique angle].
Examples:
- "X3 Compass is the AI Virtual Safety Director for small motor carriers — every answer cites 49 CFR."
- "Linear is the issue tracker for product teams who hate Jira."
- "Stripe is the payment infrastructure for the internet."
Simple structure, infinite specificity.
The 5-second test
Show your homepage to someone for 5 seconds, take it away, ask:
- What is the product?
- Who is it for?
- What's different about it?
If they can't answer all three, your value prop isn't clear.
"We are the X for Y" pattern
Specific category + specific audience > generic positioning.
| Generic | Specific |
|---|
| "AI for compliance" | "AI Safety Director for small motor carriers" |
| "Better project management" | "Issue tracker for product teams who hate Jira" |
| "Customer service software" | "Help desk for SaaS support teams under 50 people" |
Anti-patterns
- "Revolutionary AI-powered platform" (could be anything)
- "The future of compliance" (when?)
- "World's best X" (unprovable)
- "All-in-one solution" (no focus)
- "We make X easier" (what does "easier" mean?)
Refining a vague value prop
Steps:
- Write current value prop
- List 5 alternative ways the customer could solve the problem
- Identify what's TRULY unique about your approach (not features — orientation)
- Rewrite in
Product is the X for Y — Z format
Multiple personas
If you have multiple audiences, you may need:
- A primary value prop in the hero
- Audience-specific landing pages for each segment
- Use cases page that segments
Don't try to stuff 3 audiences into one hero — confuses everyone.
Common mistakes
- Feature-led ("AI-powered, real-time, integrated")
- Audience-vague ("for businesses")
- Hyperbolic ("revolutionary", "best-in-class")
- Industry-jargon ("multi-tenant, API-first, headless")
- 3 sentences trying to cover 5 things
Where this fits in X3 Compass
X3 Compass value prop: "The AI Safety Director for small motor carriers." Specific category (AI Safety Director). Specific audience (small motor carriers). Unique angle (vs hiring at $130K).
