Emergency Response Information Ergi
Emergency response information accompanies every hazmat shipment. 49 CFR 172.600-606. Required so first responders can act fast in a crash.
Required info
Description of hazmat including BASIC description. Immediate hazards to health. Risks of fire or explosion. Immediate precautions to be taken (in event of accident or incident). Methods for handling fires. Initial methods for handling spills or leaks. Preliminary first aid measures.
Sources
Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS) printed and attached. ERG-style guide page printed and attached. Shipping paper with the info embedded. ERG inside the cab + reachable. ERG number on the shipping paper that points to the matching guide page.
CHEMTREC
24/7 emergency response telephone service (1-800-424-9300). Many hazmat shippers register with CHEMTREC; shipping paper lists their CHEMTREC number. Shipper pays for the service.
ERG itself
Free PHMSA-published booklet. Each UN number maps to a Guide Page (number 111-174). Driver can carry physical book OR digital app. ERG2024 is the current edition.
Inspection check
Inspector asks 'show me the ER info for this load.' Driver should produce shipping paper + reach for ERG or SDS to demonstrate compliance.
