Tsa Hazmat Threat Assessment
TSA Hazmat Threat Assessment is a security background check required for H endorsement. Separate from state CDL process.
Application process
Driver applies at https://hazmat.tsa.dhs.gov. Pays fee ($86.50 currently). Books fingerprinting appointment at IdentoGo location. Provides personal info, immigration status.
Timeline
Typically 30-60 days. Can be faster (2 weeks) for clean records, slower (90+ days) if anything triggers review.
If approved
TSA notifies driver. Driver shows approval to state DMV. State issues H endorsement.
If denied
Driver receives Letter of Initial Determination. 60 days to appeal. Can request a waiver based on circumstances. Outside legal counsel often needed.
Carrier role
Cannot dispatch driver to hazmat load until H endorsement is on CDL. Maintain copy of CDL with H endorsement in DQF. Track expiration.
Recurring assessment
Every 5 years. Failing to renew = endorsement lapses = driver cannot haul placard-required hazmat.
