Rule of Thirds and Composition

Rule of thirds: divide frame into 3x3 grid. Place subject on a line or intersection. Avoid center (passive composition).

Rule of thirds basics

Frame divided 3×3:

• Vertical lines at 1/3 and 2/3
• Horizontal lines at 1/3 and 2/3
• 4 intersection points

Place subject on a line or intersection (especially eyes if portrait). Creates visual interest, draws eye in.

Common composition rules

1. Rule of thirds (subject off-center)
2. Lead room (space in front of subject's gaze)
3. Negative space (room around subject)
4. Diagonal composition (Z, S, or diagonal lines)
5. Golden ratio (1.618) — similar to thirds but more elegant
6. Symmetry — center subject for impact (counter to thirds)
7. Leading lines — natural lines toward subject

Breaking rules intentionally

Once mastered, break rules:

• Center for impact (CardPrepAI hero shot)
• Crammed composition for tension
• Tilted angle for instability
• Dead center for symmetry

Breaking rules deliberately = artistic choice. Breaking them accidentally = amateur.
