spotlight, or force all informed players toward the same build.

Classify the Interaction
Separate:
Additive: bonuses or effects accumulate.
Multiplicative: one effect increases the value or frequency of another.
Recursive: output becomes input to the same loop.
Substitutive: one rule replaces another rule's cost or failure.
Permission: one option removes an access restriction.
Compression: several actions, rolls, resources, or campaign steps become
one.
Coverage: one build solves several roles or problem classes.
Authority: one ability controls information, NPC response, scene framing,
or world state beyond its apparent numerical value.
Multiplicative, recursive, compression, coverage, and authority interactions
deserve the deepest review.
Distinguish Mastery from Dominance
Healthy mastery
requires repeated in-play judgment
exposes risk or consumes scarce resources
depends on positioning, timing, information, or cooperation
has counters and situations where another approach is better
produces a visible, earned payoff
leaves other characters meaningful decisions
Unhealthy dominance
follows from one obvious creation or advancement choice
is passive or always on
pays or refunds its own cost
is broadly useful across ordinary situations
repeats without changed judgment
absorbs another role or makes baseline play feel foolish
requires the GM to redesign opposition around it
High output is not sufficient evidence of a problem. Low decision density,
breadth, reliability, and repeatability often matter more.
Do not evaluate a combo from its final number alone.
The Eight Tests
Rate each healthy, borderline, or unhealthy.
1. Decision cost
How many meaningful, context-sensitive decisions activate the line? Character
creation and advancement choices count once, not every later use.
2. Risk exposure
What can be lost: WP, attributes, gear, position, time, secrecy, reputation, or
future opportunity? A cost refunded by the same loop is not a cost.
3. Opportunity cost
Which strong alternatives, roles, actions, talents, spell paths, gear choices,
or campaign opportunities become unavailable?
4. Repeatability
How often can it fire, and what restores it? Multiply moderate power by expected
frequency. Test recovery loops and downtime.
5. Counterplay
Can opponents or circumstances respond without using a contrived hard counter?
Can the players themselves vary the line, or is repetition automatic?
6. Niche and spotlight
Does the combo solve another profession's signature problems, take most scene
actions, require long solo resolution, or make support players spectators?
7. Campaign erosion
Does it permanently remove travel attrition, injury fear, scarcity, action
limits, spell risk, social resistance, investigation, or faction consequence?
8. Perceived fairness
Would informed players regard not taking it as self-sabotage? Can everyone
understand why it works? Would its use against a player feel legible and
answerable?
A failure in tests 6–8 can block a combo even when its expected numerical output
is ordinary.
Exploitation Surfaces
Always check:
WP generation, refund, transfer, and safe spending
extra actions and action-cost reduction
armor bypass, damage multiplication, and area scaling
defense layers, miss forcing, and immunity
healing, condition removal, care, and recovery compression
safe casting, grimoires, rank reduction, and mishap avoidance
travel, camp, weather, food, mount, and resource bypass
social bonuses, reputation, disguise, attitude, and compelled response
information, lore, divination, and mystery compression
hirelings, animals, summons, and extra bodies
crafting, trade, stronghold, and self-funding loops
lifepath access, rare professions, and early-rank acceleration
party-wide auras, commands, and turn multiplication
Quantify at Four Scales
Use
Calculate success probability, effect size, expected Banes, actions, WP, and
other costs.
Scene
Compare rounds, targets, prevented damage, denied actions, and spotlight against
ordinary and specialist baselines.
Session
Estimate actual uses, renewal, repeated optimal lines, and problem coverage.
Campaign
Trace advancement efficiency, wealth, attrition, recovery, travel range,
information authority, and GM adaptation.
Use strict, expected, and permissive interpretations when wording is disputed.
Party-Level Analysis
Test the combination in a full group. Ask:
Does one specialist enable several characters or multiply one dominant carry?
Does coordination require choices from each participant?
Who pays resources and who receives the payoff?
Does the line work if one member is absent, Broken, or opposed?
Does the group still need scouting, care, negotiation, craft, and logistics?
Does the same tactic answer every encounter?
Party synergy is healthiest when different players own different decisions and
the plan can fail in several understandable ways.
Sandbox and Authority Analysis
Some combinations dominate through fictional authority rather than dice.
Measure whether they:
reveal all useful information with one roll
force NPC cooperation without new obligations
bypass travel and access distinctions
neutralize faction clocks or legal consequences
manufacture scarce goods without market response
let one character decide the party's destination or alliances
compel the GM to hide information or invent immunities
Treat broad narrative permissions as high-value effects even when no bonus is
listed.
Fix Strategy
Use the smallest fix that restores decisions:
clarify scope, trigger, timing, or stacking
restore an action or resource cost
limit frequency or renewal
require fictional position, setup, or coordination
add ordinary counterplay
narrow targets or problem coverage
move access to a later rank or rarer gate
replace passive certainty with a choice
reduce numerical effect
redesign one component
Do not punish the entire party, inflate every enemy, or rely on secret GM
exceptions. Preserve the combo's intended fantasy where possible.
Verdicts
Clean: strong, legible, and earned.
Monitor: no clear failure, but repetition or table culture may expose one.
Clarify: ambiguity creates materially different power.
Cap: frequency or scaling is the main problem.
Narrow: breadth or niche coverage is the main problem.
Restructure: the loop needs a decision, cost, or counter.
Separate: access to the components needs a meaningful gate.
