Skill Scanner
A security and quality review for SKILL.md files and their bundled
scripts, references, and assets. A skill becomes trusted content the
moment an agent loads it into context, so a poorly-authored or
malicious skill can silently degrade the agent or steer it around its
own guardrails. Run this scanner before installing a third-party skill,
before checking in a new skill, and in CI on every change.
This skill works in two tiers:
- Tier 1 — heuristic review (always): the checklist below. Fast,
no execution, catches the common authoring and injection problems.
- Tier 2 — automated deep scan (when scripts/assets are present, or
when vetting an untrusted skill): run
scripts/scan_skill.py and
consult the deep-analysis references for script behaviour, secret
exposure, supply-chain, and permission risk.
When to use
- You are vetting a skill before installing it from an external source.
- You just authored a new skill (after
skill-writer).
- You edited an existing skill's body, scripts, or references.
- CI wants a pre-merge audit of changed skills.
Skip for drive-by typo fixes to an already-scanned skill, and for files
that are never loaded into agent context (asset blobs, images).
Severity gating
Each finding carries HIGH / MEDIUM / LOW severity. Fix all HIGH
before merge or install; MEDIUM unless explicitly justified in the
skill; LOW at author discretion.
Tier 1 — heuristic checklist
1. Prompt-injection phrases
HIGH — text that would redirect the agent away from its system
prompt. Scan for:
ignore (all )?previous instructions
disregard (the |your )?(system|previous) (prompt|instructions)
you are (now |actually )?a .* (assistant|agent|model)
forget (everything|what you were told)
new instructions: / new task: on its own line
- Fenced blocks labelled "run this prompt" that contain the above.
Fix: rephrase without role assertion, or remove the block. Examples are
fine when clearly labelled as examples inside a fenced block — the test
is whether a bare reader could mistake the text for an instruction the
agent should follow. See references/prompt-injection-patterns.md for
the full pattern catalogue.
2. Unscoped authority claims
MEDIUM — the skill asserts it speaks for the user, the repository,
or the system when it should not. Scan for:
always / never without an exception clause.
you must when the guidance is a recommendation, not a hard
requirement. Reserve must for invariants (name field presence,
file-path format).
do not ask the user in isolation — escalation discipline is a
system-level concern, not a skill-level one.
3. Description drift
MEDIUM — the frontmatter description and the body disagree.
- Does the one-sentence description cover the body's actual scope?
- If the body diagnoses a problem, the description should not say
fix.
- If the body covers five workflows, the description should not hint at
a single task.
Fix: rewrite the description to match, or split the skill (see
skill-writer's depth gates).
4. Body length
- LOW if body exceeds 500 lines.
- MEDIUM if body exceeds 800 lines.
- HIGH if body exceeds 1200 lines.
Oversized skills waste tokens on every load and signal the skill is
covering too much. Split by verb or by sub-domain.
5. Missing sections
MEDIUM — the body lacks the structural sections skill-writer
calls for: a ## When to use (or equivalent), a negative-case section
(## When to skip), and a scope limit (## What this skill is not).
6. External URLs presented as authoritative
MEDIUM — the skill cites an external URL and implicitly trusts it.
Scan for bare http(s) links outside a recognised references-style
heading (Source material, References, Further reading,
Resources, Provenance).
Fix: move the link into a references section and add context
("Canonical docs, accessed 2026-04-21") so stale pages don't silently
mislead the agent.
7. Embedded user-like text
LOW/MEDIUM — text that reads like a user utterance, which the agent
may confuse with the active conversation when the skill loads
mid-session. Watch for lines starting with User: / Assistant: /
> outside a fenced block, and imperatives like Please do X
(rephrase as Do X when …).
8. Frontmatter validity
HIGH if the file fails to parse:
- YAML delimiters present (
--- on the first line and a closing ---).
name and description both non-empty strings.
name equals the parent directory name.
Tier 2 — automated deep scan
When a skill ships scripts/, declares broad allowed-tools, or comes
from an untrusted source, run the bundled scanner over its directory:

The script performs a static, no-execution pass and emits findings for
the categories below. Review its output alongside the references:
- Script analysis — dangerous code patterns in bundled scripts
(shell-out with untrusted input,
eval/exec, network calls,
destructive filesystem operations). See
references/dangerous-code-patterns.md.
- Secret exposure — hard-coded credentials and tokens, and code
that reads or modifies agent/shell config or exfiltrates API keys.
- Supply-chain risk — unpinned dependencies,
curl | sh install
steps, and fetches from unverified sources.
- Permission analysis —
allowed-tools broader than the skill's
stated job, especially Bash/write access on a read-only skill. See
references/permission-analysis.md.
Treat any critical/high finding from the script as a HIGH for
gating purposes. The script is an aid, not an oracle: a clean run does
not prove a skill is safe — read the scripts yourself for anything you
will install with broad permissions.
A reference file that legitimately documents injection patterns (a
pattern catalogue, for instance) would otherwise self-trigger the
prompt-injection check. Such a file can opt out by including the marker
<!-- skill-scanner: documentation-context -->. Only the prompt-injection
check is skipped for marked files; all other checks still run, and the
marker is plainly visible in review so it cannot be abused silently.
Output format

- Files that are not a skill's
SKILL.md or its bundled scripts.
- Reference/asset files that are not loaded into agent context.
- Imported skills where a trusted upstream scanner has already approved
the content — note the provenance in the skill's Source material
section.
What this skill is not
- Not a generic Markdown linter — use
ruff / mdformat for cosmetic
issues.
- Not a test of factual accuracy. A clean scan does not mean the
skill's advice is correct; author review covers that.
- Not a replacement for human code review. People still decide whether
a new skill belongs.
