LinkedIn Post Boosting
Boosting turns an existing LinkedIn post into a paid promotion to increase visibility and reach beyond your current followers.
Who should boost?
| Profile | Goal |
|---|
| SMBs & Solopreneurs | Reach new customers |
| Founders & Startups | Promote launches and milestones |
| Creators & Thought Leaders | Grow influence |
| Event Marketers | Drive event awareness |
| Marketers & PR Teams | Amplify campaigns |
| Recruiters & Talent Teams | Boost employer brand and job posts |
| Sales Professionals | Warm up prospects |
| Nonprofits | Increase visibility for programs or campaigns |
Who can boost?
- Page admins: Can boost from their LinkedIn Page (available to all admins)
- Personal profile: Boosting from personal profile is currently in beta, limited rollout
What boosting gives you
- Expand reach and attract new followers
- Promote products, events, and key announcements
- Launch quick campaigns — no ad expertise required
- Reach new audiences using LinkedIn's professional targeting
- Drive traffic to a website or landing page
Boost types
| Type | How |
|---|
| Profile post | Boost directly from a personal post (beta) |
| Page post | Boost from your LinkedIn Page |
| Event post | Boost an event post to drive registrations |
Step-by-step: how to advise on a boost
Step 1 — Pick the right post
Only boost posts that are already working organically. Look for:
- Good engagement (likes, comments, shares) relative to followers
- Clear messaging and strong visuals
- Posts that align with a specific goal (event, launch, campaign)
Do not boost posts with weak organic performance — boosting amplifies what's there, it doesn't fix bad content.
Step 2 — Choose the objective
| Objective | Use when |
|---|
| Brand Awareness | Building recognition, not driving clicks |
| Engagement | Getting likes, comments, shares |
| Video Views | Driving video consumption |
| Website Visits | Sending people to a URL |
| Lead Generation | Capturing contact info |
Match objective to the actual goal. Don't default to Brand Awareness if the post has a CTA link.
Step 3 — Set the audience
- Aim for 50,000 to 500,000: This range gives the best mix of relevance and scale
- Too narrow (under 50k): limited delivery, higher CPM
- Too broad (over 500k): relevance drops, waste increases
- Use Custom audience for retargeting or known lists
- Use Suggested audience for discovery (ramping availability)
Step 4 — Set budget and duration
| Minimum | Recommended |
|---|
| $25 total | $50+ |
| 3 days minimum | 7 to 14 days |
- Shorter runs don't give the algorithm enough data to optimize
- The system needs time to "learn" the best delivery pattern
- Longer runs (1 to 2 weeks) produce meaningfully better results
Step 5 — Review format compatibility
Not all post formats are available for all boost types:
| Format | Page Boost | Profile Boost |
|---|
| Single Image | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-Image | Yes | Yes |
| Video | Yes | Yes |
| Text | Yes | Yes |
| Article/Newsletter | Yes | Yes |
| Live Event | Yes | No |
| Non-Live Event | Yes | Yes |
Boost vs Campaign Manager
| Feature | Page Boost | Profile Boost | Campaign Manager |
|---|
| Objectives | Awareness, Engagement, Video Views, Website Visits, Lead Gen | Same as Page | Full suite including conversions, job applicants |
| Bidding | Auto only | Auto only | Auto, Cost Cap, Manual |
| Budget | Total + dates | Total + duration | Full control |
| Targeting | Custom + Suggested | Custom + Suggested | Custom or Auto-Targeting |
| LAN (LinkedIn Audience Network) | Optional | No | Yes |
| Complexity | Low | Low | High |
Use Campaign Manager when you need conversion tracking, advanced bidding, or full funnel campaigns. Boosting is for quick amplification of content that's already working.
6 tips for better boost performance
- Pick posts with organic momentum — boost clear, engaging posts that are already getting traction
- Use strong visuals and concise copy — simple messaging and good images outperform busy creative
- Target 50k to 500k audience size — the sweet spot for relevance and scale
- Match objective to goal — impressions for awareness, website visits for traffic, video views for content
- Budget at least $25 and run 3+ days — below this the system can't learn
- Run 1 to 2 weeks for full optimization — longer duration improves delivery quality significantly
Common mistakes to flag
- Boosting a low-performing post hoping paid reach will save it
- Setting audience under 50k (too narrow, poor delivery)
- Running for less than 3 days (algorithm doesn't have time to optimize)
- Choosing Brand Awareness when the post has a direct CTA
- Using Campaign Manager complexity when a simple boost would suffice
