Burn Disc

Burn a single batch via growisofs. Preferred path is from a pre-built ISO; direct burn is supported as a fallback. Verifies media is blank and matches expected capacity before writing.

When to use

• Burning one disc at a time, manually, with explicit control.
• Called by burn-batch-job for each disc in a multi-disc plan.

Inputs to gather

• Batch number or explicit ISO path.
• Device — auto-detect with lsblk -nro NAME,TYPE | awk '$2=="rom"{print "/dev/"$1}' | head -1. Allow override.
• Copy count (1–5). Default 1.

Procedure

1. Confirm user is in the cdrom group: groups | grep -q cdrom. If not, instruct: sudo usermod -aG cdrom $USER && newgrp cdrom. Abort.
2. Resolve device. Run dvd+rw-mediainfo <device>. Verify:
   • Media is blank (Disc status: blank).
   • Capacity matches expected media type (within tolerance). Abort if mismatched.
3. Print time estimate before starting (e.g. BD-R 25 GB at 6x ≈ 45 min; M-Disc typically 4x ≈ 70 min). Ask the user to confirm only on first burn of a session.
4. For each copy C from 1 to N:
   • Start timestamp.
   • If ISO available: growisofs -Z <device>=$WORKSPACE/iso/disc-NN.iso.
   • Else direct: growisofs -Z <device> -V <label> -R -J -udf <staging-dir>.
   • Capture stderr to $WORKSPACE/logs/disc-NN-burn-<C>.log.
   • End timestamp + exit code logged.
   • If C < N, eject (eject <device>), prompt the user to insert the next blank disc, wait for dvd+rw-mediainfo to report blank again before continuing.
5. After final copy, eject and report total elapsed time and per-copy success.

Output / side effects

• One or more burned discs.
• $WORKSPACE/logs/disc-NN-burn-<C>.log per copy.

Safety / constraints

• Refuse to burn over non-blank media unless user explicitly passes an "overwrite" override (and media supports it; M-Disc and BD-R do not).
• Burn is irreversible — confirm device path before launching the first copy of a session.
