- Define the API contract first; both sides code against it.
- Validate at the boundary; never trust the client.
- Keep one source of truth for types/schema shared across layers.
- Optimize the seam — most bugs live between layers.
Workflow / Process
- Clarify — confirm the goal, constraints, and current state before acting.
- Assess — inspect what exists; find the real problem, not the symptom.
- Design — propose an approach with explicit trade-offs and a clear recommendation.
- Execute — implement in small, verifiable steps using Fullstack Development conventions.
- Verify — validate against end-to-end tests covering a full user flow plus contract tests.
Best practices
- Share types/schema (e.g. zod, OpenAPI, tRPC) across client and server.
- Handle loading/error/empty states explicitly in the UI.
- Keep business logic in the backend, presentation in the frontend.
- Version APIs and avoid breaking existing clients.
Anti-patterns
- Duplicating validation logic that silently drifts between layers.
- Leaking DB models directly as API responses.
- Putting authorization decisions in the frontend.
