Purpose
The Value Proposition Canvas (Customer Side) systematically captures what the customer is trying to achieve (Jobs), what frustrates or blocks them (Pains), and what would delight them (Gains). By categorizing and prioritizing these elements, it creates a precise customer-need profile that directly feeds into solution mapping - where solutions are mapped against these needs.

Guidance: Functional jobs should be articulated from the persona's perspective, using their language. "Ensure 95% OEE" is a job; "buy predictive maintenance software" is NOT a job (it's a solution).
1b) Emotional Jobs
"How does [Persona Name] want to feel in relation to this area of their work?"
Explore:
- "What emotional state do they seek?" (e.g., confidence that production will run smoothly, peace of mind about equipment reliability, pride in operational excellence)
- "What emotional state do they want to avoid?" (e.g., anxiety about unexpected breakdowns, stress from firefighting, embarrassment from missed targets)
- "How important are these emotional aspects compared to the functional ones?"
Guidance: Emotional jobs are often the hidden drivers behind purchasing decisions. A production manager may say they need "better uptime data" (functional) but really they want to "stop dreading Monday mornings because of weekend breakdowns" (emotional).
1c) Social Jobs
"How does [Persona Name] want to be perceived by others in relation to this area?"
Explore:
- "How do they want their team to see them?" (e.g., as a competent leader, as innovative, as reliable)
- "How do they want management to see them?" (e.g., as someone who delivers results, as forward-thinking, as cost-conscious)
- "How do they want industry peers to perceive them?" (e.g., as a thought leader, as an early adopter, as operationally excellent)
- "Is there a reputation element at stake?" (e.g., "If I champion this initiative and it fails, my credibility suffers")
Guidance: Social jobs often determine whether a champion emerges internally. If adopting your solution makes the persona look good to their boss, adoption is far more likely.
1d) Job Prioritization
"Let's rank these jobs by importance and frequency."
For each identified job, assess:
- Importance: How critical is this job? (1 = nice to do, 5 = essential / career-defining)
- Frequency: How often does this job arise? (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Ad-hoc)
- Satisfaction with current approach: How well can the persona do this job today? (1 = very poorly, 5 = very well)
The most valuable opportunity lies where: Importance is HIGH + Frequency is HIGH + Current satisfaction is LOW
Create a ranked list of the top 5-7 jobs.
Section 2 of 3: Customer Pains
"Now let's explore what frustrates, blocks, or costs [Persona Name] too much when trying to get these jobs done."
Work through each pain category:
2a) Time Waste

2e) Blockers

- "What organizational barriers exist?" (Budget, politics, silos, change resistance)
- "What technical barriers exist?" (Legacy systems, data silos, missing infrastructure)

2f) Pain Prioritization

For each identified pain, assess:
- Frequency: How often is this pain experienced? (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Rarely)
- Intensity: How severe is this pain when it occurs? (1 = minor annoyance, 5 = critical / showstopper)
- Solvability: How feasible is it to address this pain with your offering? (1 = very difficult, 5 = directly solvable)
- WTP Impact: How much does this pain drive willingness to pay for a solution? (1 = low, 5 = "shut up and take my money")
Pain Priority Score = Frequency x Intensity x Solvability x WTP Impact

Section 3 of 3: Customer Gains

- Differentiation: Does delivering this gain set you apart from alternatives? (1 = everyone does this, 5 = unique to your offering)
- Feasibility: Can you realistically deliver this gain? (1 = aspirational, 5 = we can do this today)
- WTP Impact: How much does this gain drive willingness to pay? (1 = low premium, 5 = high premium)
Create a ranked list of the top 5-7 gains, categorized by type.
Quality Criteria
- Concreteness: Jobs, Pains, and Gains must be specific and measurable where possible. "Better efficiency" is too vague - "reduce unplanned downtime from 8% to 3%, saving EUR 200K/year" is concrete
- Explainability: The VPC should be self-explanatory to anyone on the team, even without context from prior analysis
- Consistency: Jobs/Pains/Gains must be consistent with the Persona Profile. A persona with "low tech-savviness" shouldn't have a job like "build custom analytics dashboards"
- Completeness: All three sections (Jobs, Pains, Gains) completed with categorization and prioritization. At least 5 items per section
- Customer Language: All items should be phrased from the customer's perspective, not the provider's. No solution-speak in the customer side of the VPC
- Prioritization Rigor: The prioritization must be transparent and defensible, not just gut feeling
