Core Techniques

Repetition and Refrain Repetition is the spine of spoken word. It creates rhythm, emphasis, and structure.

• Anaphora: Repeating the opening phrase of successive lines ("I come from... I come from... I come from...")
• Epistrophe: Repeating the ending phrase ("...and still I rise... and still I rise")
• Refrain: A recurring line or stanza that evolves in meaning through the poem
• Rule of three: Three iterations of a pattern before breaking it

• Not "love" but "she left her coffee cup on my nightstand and I didn't wash it for a week"

Specific details make universal themes land.

The Turn Every strong poem changes direction at least once. The audience thinks the poem is about one thing, and then you reveal it is about something deeper. This is the turn.

• Set up a pattern or expectation
• Subvert it at a pivotal moment
• The turn often happens in the final third of the poem
• It is the moment the audience gasps, leans forward, or goes silent

Writing Process

First Draft: Get It Out

1. Start with heat: write from urgency, anger, wonder, grief, or joy
2. Write without editing for 15-30 minutes
3. Write more than you need (you will cut 30-50%)
4. Do not worry about performance yet - get the raw material down

Second Draft: Find the Poem

1. Read it aloud. Circle the lines that make you feel something.
2. Cut everything that does not serve those core lines.
3. Identify your poem's question: what is this really about?
4. Find or create your refrain - the line the audience will remember.
5. Ensure every image earns its place.

Third Draft: Build for Performance

1. Read aloud again. Where do you stumble? Rewrite for speakability.
2. Mark beats: where do you pause, accelerate, get quiet, get loud?
3. Test the rhythm: clap or tap the natural meter of your lines.
4. Identify your "breath map" - where will you breathe in performance?
5. Time it: most slam poems are 3 minutes. Open mic sets are 3-5 minutes.

Polish:

• Replace every cliche with a fresh image
• Cut adjectives that the noun already implies
• Verify that your ending earns its weight (the last line carries disproportionate power)
• Ask: if the audience remembers one line, which line do I want it to be?

Structural Templates

The List Poem: A catalog of related items or experiences that build toward a revelation. Structure: Item, item, item... item that breaks the pattern and reveals the deeper truth.

The Letter Poem: Addressed to a specific person, place, or concept. Structure: "Dear [X]..." allows direct address, intimacy, and unsent honesty.

The Origin Story: Traces a personal history through specific moments. Structure: Chronological or reverse-chronological, ending with who you have become.

The Definition Poem: Redefines a word through personal experience. Structure: "They say [word] means [dictionary]. But in my house, [word] meant..."

The Dual Voice: Two perspectives, alternating or colliding. Structure: Voice A / Voice B / Both, building to convergence or divergence.

Performance Craft

The Voice as Instrument

Volume dynamics:

• Whisper for intimacy (the audience leans in)
• Full voice for declarations
• Yelling is rarely effective - controlled power is stronger than volume

Pace:

• Slow down on the lines that matter most
• Speed up for lists, building energy, urgency
• The pause is your most powerful tool. Silence after a devastating line lets it land.

Pitch:

• Vary your pitch to avoid monotone
• Lower pitch signals gravity and authority
• Higher pitch signals urgency or vulnerability
• Find your natural speaking pitch and work from there

Articulation:

• Over-pronounce consonants slightly (audiences need clarity)
• Do not swallow line endings
• Project to the back of the room, not at the microphone

Microphone Technique

• Hold the mic 2-3 inches from your mouth at a 45-degree angle
• Do not cup the head of the mic (causes feedback)
• Pull back slightly for loud passages, move closer for quiet ones
• Test pop sensitivity: say "Peter Piper" before you start to check for plosives
• If using a mic stand, adjust it before you begin and then leave it alone

Body and Stage Presence

Stance:

• Plant your feet. Nervous pacing undermines your words.
• A grounded body communicates confidence.
• Deliberate movement is powerful: stepping forward = emphasis, stepping back = reflection

Hands:

• Gesture naturally from the content, not from nervousness
• A pointed finger, an open palm, a fist - these mean different things
• When not gesturing, let hands rest at your sides (not in pockets, not crossed)

Eye contact:

• In small rooms: make real eye contact with individuals
• In large rooms: scan sections, making each group feel seen
• During vulnerable lines, you can close your eyes briefly - it signals inwardness
• Return to eye contact for the lines you need the audience to receive

Emotional authenticity:

• Feel the poem, but do not lose yourself in it
• Crying on stage can be powerful once. Regularly crying signals you are not ready to perform the piece.
• The audience should feel MORE than you appear to. You are the conduit, not the destination.

Memorization

Spoken word is typically performed from memory. Methods:

1. Write it by hand three times (engages motor memory)
2. Record yourself reading it and listen on repeat
3. Walk and recite: physical movement aids memorization
4. Chunk method: memorize four lines at a time, then chain chunks together
5. Performance rehearsal: practice the full piece with gestures and movement 10+ times
