The 12 Principles of Animation
These principles, codified by Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, are the foundation of all animation regardless of medium.
1. Squash and Stretch
The most important principle. Objects deform when they move -- they squash on impact and stretch during fast movement. This gives weight, flexibility, and life to animated objects.
- A bouncing ball squashes flat on the ground and stretches tall in the air
- A character's face stretches when surprised, squashes when impacted
- Maintain consistent volume: as an object stretches taller, it gets narrower
2. Anticipation
Before a major action, there is a preparatory movement in the opposite direction. A character crouches before jumping, pulls back before throwing, inhales before speaking. Anticipation tells the audience something is about to happen and makes the action readable.
3. Staging
Present an idea so it is unmistakably clear. Use composition, timing, and camera angle to direct the audience's attention to the most important action. One action at a time. Do not let secondary actions compete with the primary one.
4. Straight Ahead vs Pose to Pose
Two approaches to creating animation:
- Straight ahead: Draw frame by frame in sequence. Produces fluid, spontaneous movement. Harder to control timing and proportions. Good for effects animation (fire, water, smoke).
- Pose to pose: Plan key poses first, then fill in the in-between frames. Better control of timing and structure. Standard for character animation. Most professional animation uses this approach.
5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
Not everything on a character stops at the same time.
- Follow through: When a character stops, loose elements continue moving (hair, clothing, tail, ears).
- Overlapping action: Different parts of the body move at different rates. Arms arrive after the torso. Hair follows the head with a delay.
- This creates organic, believable movement.
6. Slow In and Slow Out
Movement rarely starts or stops abruptly. Objects ease into motion (slow out from a pose) and ease to a stop (slow in to a pose). More in-between frames near the key poses, fewer in the middle of the movement. This follows real physics and feels natural.
7. Arcs
Natural movement follows curved paths, not straight lines. A hand waving follows an arc. A head turning follows an arc. A ball thrown follows a parabolic arc. Track the path of action for every moving element and ensure it curves naturally.
8. Secondary Action
Supporting actions that reinforce the main action without distracting from it. A character walks (primary) while whistling and swinging their arms (secondary). Secondary actions add richness and personality.
9. Timing
The speed of an action communicates its nature. Fewer frames between poses = faster movement (snappy, energetic). More frames = slower movement (heavy, gentle, deliberate). Timing is what separates amateur from professional animation. Study timing charts and experiment constantly.
10. Exaggeration
Push poses, expressions, and timing beyond realistic proportions to make them clearer and more entertaining. A surprised character's eyes do not just widen -- they bulge. A heavy object does not just fall -- it craters. The degree of exaggeration sets the style (subtle for realistic, extreme for cartoony).
11. Solid Drawing / Solid Posing
Characters should feel three-dimensional with weight, depth, and balance even in 2D animation. Avoid "twins" -- symmetrical poses where both arms and both legs do the same thing. Understand form, perspective, and anatomy. In 3D, this translates to strong pose design and silhouette readability.
12. Appeal
Characters should be interesting to watch. This does not mean attractive -- a villain can have appeal. Appeal comes from clear design, readable silhouettes, personality in movement, and intentional style. The audience should want to keep watching.
Frame Rates and Timing
Standard Frame Rates
- 24 fps: Film standard. Most animation is produced at this rate.
- 25 fps: PAL standard (Europe, Australia).
- 30 fps: NTSC standard (North America, Japan). Common for web and broadcast.
- 12 fps: Common for stylized 2D animation. Snappy, graphic feel.
- 60 fps: Smooth motion for games and some web content.
Ones, Twos, and Threes
- On ones: A unique drawing for every frame (24 drawings per second at 24fps). Extremely smooth. Used for fast action, subtle movement, and high-budget production.
- On twos: A unique drawing every other frame (12 drawings per second at 24fps). Standard for most 2D animation. Slightly snappier feel.
- On threes: A unique drawing every third frame (8 drawings per second at 24fps). Limited, stylized. Used in anime and budget-conscious production.
Mix these within a single shot: slow, subtle movements on twos or threes, fast actions on ones.
2D Animation Pipeline
Pre-Production
- Concept and script: Define the story, gag, or message
- Character design: Model sheets with front, side, three-quarter views, expressions, and key poses
- Storyboard: Rough panel-by-panel representation of the story with camera directions
- Animatic: Timed storyboard with rough audio. This is your blueprint. Do not skip this step.
- Layout: Clean background designs and character staging for each scene
- Audio recording: Record dialogue and scratch music before animating. Animation is timed to audio, not the reverse.
Production
- Key animation (key poses): Block in the most important poses that define the movement
- Breakdowns: The transition poses between keys that define the path of motion
- In-betweens: Fill in remaining frames for smooth motion
- Cleanup: Refined line work over rough animation
- Coloring: Flat colors applied to cleaned-up frames
- Effects animation: Smoke, fire, water, sparkles, and other elements
- Compositing: Layer characters over backgrounds, add lighting and atmosphere
2D Software Options
- Toon Boom Harmony: Industry standard for professional 2D. Powerful rigging, effects, and compositing. Expensive.
- TVPaint: Traditional frame-by-frame focused. Loved by hand-drawn animators.
- Clip Studio Paint: Affordable, excellent for frame-by-frame with a drawing focus.
- Procreate (iPad): Accessible, great for short animations and tests. Limited frame count.
- OpenToonz: Free and open-source. Used by Studio Ghibli. Steep learning curve.
- Krita: Free, strong painting tools, adequate animation features.
- Adobe Animate: Good for web animation and interactive content. Vector-based.
3D Animation Pipeline
Pre-Production
Same as 2D through the animatic stage. Additionally:
- Concept art: Visual development for characters, environments, and props
- Reference gathering: Collect reference images, videos, and motion reference for every element
Production
- Modeling: Create 3D geometry for characters, props, and environments
- Texturing/Surfacing: Apply materials, colors, and surface detail
- Rigging: Build the skeleton and control system that animators will use to pose characters
- Animation: Pose and time the characters using the rig
- Lighting: Illuminate the scene to create mood, depth, and focus
- Rendering: The computer calculates the final image for each frame
- Compositing: Combine render passes (diffuse, specular, shadow, ambient occlusion) and add final touches

- Houdini: Procedural workflow. Industry standard for effects (destruction, fluids, particles). Steep learning curve. Free apprentice version.
- ZBrush: Digital sculpting. Used for character modeling and high-detail organic forms.
Rigging Basics
A rig is the skeleton and control system inside a 3D model:
- Bones/Joints: The skeleton hierarchy. Parent-child relationships define how parts move together.
- IK (Inverse Kinematics): Move the hand and the arm follows. Used for limbs that interact with the environment.
- FK (Forward Kinematics): Rotate from the shoulder out. Used for overlapping action and flowing movements.
- Controllers: Custom shapes that animators grab to pose the character. Good rigs have intuitive, clearly visible controllers.
- Blend shapes/Shape keys: Predefined facial expressions that can be mixed. Essential for facial animation.
- Skinning/Weight painting: Defining how the mesh deforms when the skeleton moves. Poorly weighted rigs produce ugly deformation.
Motion Graphics vs Character Animation
Motion Graphics
- Focuses on graphic elements: text, shapes, icons, data visualization
- Typically shorter format: title sequences, explainers, social media
- Design-driven: typography, color, composition are primary
- Less emphasis on character performance, more on visual rhythm and information delivery
- Primary tools: After Effects, Cinema 4D, Blender (motion graphics nodes)
Character Animation
- Focuses on bringing characters to life with personality and emotion
- Requires understanding of acting, body mechanics, and physics
- Performance-driven: the character must feel like a thinking, feeling being
- Longer learning curve for convincing results
- Primary tools: Maya, Blender, Toon Boom, TVPaint

After Effects Animation Workflow
Setting Up for Animation
- Create a composition at your target resolution and frame rate

Essential Animation Techniques in AE
- Keyframe types: Linear (constant speed), Easy Ease (natural acceleration/deceleration), Bezier (custom curves)

Motion Graphics Principles
- Easing: Never use linear keyframes for organic motion. Ease in and out of every movement.
- Overshoot: Elements arrive at their destination and slightly overshoot before settling. Adds energy and polish.
- Offset and delay: Stagger the timing of multiple elements. Everything arriving simultaneously looks robotic.
- Follow-through: Secondary elements continue moving after the primary element stops (text shadows, trailing particles).
- Consistent physics: Decide if your world has gravity, mass, and friction. Apply rules consistently.
Blender Animation Workflow
Setting Up a Scene
- Set frame rate in Output Properties (24, 25, or 30fps)
- Import or create your assets
- Set up the camera and basic lighting
- Open the Dope Sheet or Graph Editor alongside the 3D viewport
Animating in Blender
- Go to frame 1. Pose your character or object.
- Select the properties to keyframe (location, rotation, scale) and press I to insert keyframe.
- Move to the next key frame. Adjust the pose. Insert another keyframe.
- Use the Graph Editor to refine interpolation curves.

- Bouncing ball: Master timing, spacing, squash and stretch, and arcs
- Bouncing ball with personality: Same exercise but make the ball feel heavy, light, excited, or tired
- Pendulum: Overlapping action and follow-through
- Walk cycle: The fundamental character animation exercise. Combines almost all 12 principles.
- Run cycle: Builds on walk with different timing and physics
- Weight lift: A character picks up something heavy. Teaches anticipation, force, and staging.
- Dialogue shot: Lip sync and acting. The test of character animation skill.
Study Methods
- Frame-by-frame analysis: Download animation you admire and step through it frame by frame. Study the spacing and poses.
- Video reference: Film yourself or others performing the action you want to animate. Use it as reference, not as rotoscope.
- Thumbnail sketches: Before animating, sketch small quick pose drawings to plan the movement.
- Animation journals: Keep notes on techniques you learn, mistakes you made, and breakthroughs you had.
