Arrangement Principles
- Contrast creates interest: Follow a dense section with a sparse one. Follow loud with soft. Follow rhythmic with melodic.
- Energy management: Map the energy of your track on a curve. Build toward peaks, provide valleys for contrast.
- Introduction of elements: Do not present everything at once. Introduce elements gradually so the listener has something new to discover.
- Removal of elements: Taking something away is as powerful as adding something. Drop the drums before a chorus to make their return impactful.
- The 8-bar test: If a section does not change in some way every 8 bars (new element, new melody, arrangement change), it risks losing the listener's attention.
Reference Tracks
Always work with reference tracks from commercially released songs in your target genre:
- Import them into your session on a separate track
- Match their loudness to your mix using a loudness meter
- Compare arrangement: when do elements enter and exit? How long are sections?
- Compare frequency balance: does your low end match? Your high end? Your midrange?
- Compare stereo width: how wide is their mix at different moments?
- A/B frequently throughout the production process
Recording
Signal Chain Basics
Instrument/Voice > Microphone > Cable > Preamp (often built into interface) > A/D Converter (in interface) > DAW
Recording Best Practices
- Record at 24-bit, 44.1kHz or 48kHz. 24-bit gives you headroom that 16-bit does not.
- Aim for peaks around -12dBFS to -6dBFS. Leave headroom. You cannot fix clipping.
- Record in the quietest room available. Treat your recording space with absorption panels, bass traps, and diffusion.
- Use a pop filter for vocal recording.
- Record DI (direct input) for guitars and bass alongside amp recordings for flexibility in mixing.
- Always keep raw recordings. Process on duplicate tracks.
Microphone Selection

Mixing Fundamentals
The Goal of Mixing
A good mix ensures every element is audible, occupies its own space, and serves the emotional intent of the song. The listener should feel the music without noticing the mix.
Gain Staging
Before mixing:
- Set all faders to 0dB (unity)
- Adjust clip/region gain so each track peaks around -18dBFS to -12dBFS
- This gives you headroom on the master bus and keeps plugins operating in their sweet spot
EQ (Equalization)
EQ shapes the frequency content of each track:
- High-pass filter (HPF): Roll off low frequencies below where the instrument contributes. Apply to nearly everything except kick and bass.
- Low-shelf: Gently boost or cut the entire low-frequency range.
- Parametric bands: Surgical control over specific frequencies. Cut narrow, boost wide.
- High-shelf: Boost for "air" and presence, cut for warmth and darkness.
EQ strategy:
- Cut before you boost. Removing problems is more effective than adding shine.
- Use a narrow Q to find and cut resonant frequencies (sweep a boosted narrow band until you hear the problem, then cut there).
- Use a wide Q for gentle tonal shaping.
- Compare before and after. If the EQ'd version is just louder, you have not improved anything.
Compression
Compression reduces the dynamic range (difference between loud and quiet):
- Threshold: The level above which compression begins.
- Ratio: How much the signal is reduced (4:1 means 4dB over threshold becomes 1dB over).
- Attack: How quickly compression engages. Fast attack tames transients. Slow attack lets transients through for punch.
- Release: How quickly compression lets go. Should roughly follow the rhythm of the material.
- Makeup gain: Compensate for the volume reduction so you can compare accurately.
Common applications:
- Vocals: moderate ratio (3:1-4:1), medium attack, medium release. Consistent level throughout.
- Drums: higher ratio (4:1-8:1), slow attack (lets the transient snap through), fast release.
- Bass: moderate ratio, medium-fast attack to control peaks while maintaining groove.
- Mix bus: gentle ratio (1.5:1-2:1), slow attack, auto release. Glues the mix together subtly.
Reverb
Reverb creates a sense of space:
- Room: Small, short reflections. Natural, intimate.
- Plate: Dense, smooth. Classic on vocals and snare.
- Hall: Large, long. Cinematic, epic, orchestral.
- Chamber: Medium, warm. Versatile.
- Spring: Metallic, vintage. Characteristic of guitar amps and vintage recordings.
Usage principles:
- Use sends (aux/bus), not inserts. This lets multiple tracks share one reverb and preserves the dry signal.
- EQ your reverb return: cut lows below 200Hz and highs above 8kHz to keep it from muddying the mix.
- Pre-delay (20-80ms) separates the dry signal from the reverb, maintaining clarity.
- Less reverb than you think. In solo, a track might sound dry. In the mix, it will sit naturally.
Panning
Distribute elements across the stereo field:
- Center: Kick, bass, snare, lead vocal, main melody. The anchors of the mix.
- Slightly off-center (10-30%): Secondary vocals, rhythm guitars, keys.
- Wide (50-100%): Background vocals, doubles, pads, ambient elements, stereo effects.
- Hard left/right: Drum overheads, room mics, wide stereo synth layers.
Panning creates width and separation. If everything is centered, the mix feels narrow and crowded.
Mix Bus Processing
Apply subtle processing to the stereo mix bus:
- Gentle compression (1-3dB of gain reduction) to glue the mix
- Subtle EQ for overall tonal shaping
- Saturation/tape emulation for warmth and cohesion
- Stereo imaging to fine-tune width
Apply mix bus processing early and mix into it. Do not add it at the end.
Mastering Chain
What Mastering Does
Mastering is the final step before distribution. It ensures the track sounds consistent, polished, and competitive across all playback systems.
Basic Mastering Chain (in order)
- EQ: Gentle broad corrections. No more than 1-2dB in any band. If you need more, fix it in the mix.
- Compression/Multiband: Light glue compression (1-2dB gain reduction). Multiband for balancing frequency ranges independently.
- Saturation (optional): Subtle harmonic enhancement for warmth and presence.
- Stereo imaging (optional): Narrow the low end (below 200Hz to mono), widen the high end slightly.
- Limiter: Sets the final loudness ceiling. Target -1dBTP (true peak) ceiling to prevent inter-sample clipping.
Loudness Targets
- Streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube): -14 LUFS integrated. These platforms normalize to approximately this level, so mastering louder provides no benefit and may trigger quality-reducing limiters.
- CD: -9 to -12 LUFS (louder, but dynamic range matters).
- Vinyl: Requires wider dynamic range and careful low-end management.
- Club/DJ: -8 to -10 LUFS (louder for DJ systems, but varies).
DIY Mastering vs Professional Mastering
If you are mastering your own music:
- Master in a different session from your mix
- Use fresh ears (take a break between mixing and mastering)
- Reference against commercially released tracks at matched loudness
- Check on multiple playback systems (studio monitors, headphones, car, phone)
For important releases, professional mastering is worth the investment. A mastering engineer brings fresh ears, a treated room, and specialized experience.
Collaboration
Working with Vocalists
- Provide a rough mix with clear vocal space (mute guide vocals if any)
- Include a lyric sheet if you have one, or leave it to the vocalist
- Communicate the vibe, reference tracks, and any melodic ideas without being restrictive
- Record multiple takes and comp the best phrases together
- Be open to the artist's interpretation changing the direction of the song
Working with Other Producers
- Agree on DAW, sample rate, and tempo before starting
- Use stems (individual track bounces) for cross-DAW collaboration
- Version control: number your project files (trackname_v1, trackname_v2)
- Discuss credit splits and ownership before the track is finished
