What Is Citizen Science?

Data Collection Methodology

Why Methodology Matters

Poor data is worse than no data - it can lead to wrong conclusions. Following standardized protocols ensures your observations are scientifically valuable.

Core Principles

Accuracy

• Identify species to the level you are confident (it is okay to say "sparrow sp." instead of guessing)
• Record exact counts when possible, estimate ranges when necessary
• Note observation conditions (weather, visibility, time of day)
• Distinguish between what you saw and what you think you saw

Consistency

• Use the same methods each time you observe
• Visit the same locations at similar times for monitoring projects
• Use standardized protocols provided by the project
• Record effort (time spent, distance covered) every session

Completeness

• Record negative data (what you did NOT see is also valuable)
• In eBird, submit "complete checklists" listing all species detected
• Note habitat type and conditions
