Question 4: "What do you think students are doing during that silence? Is silence necessarily a bad thing?"

Pausing: After asking a question, wait. Don't fill the silence. The same think-time principle that applies to students applies to coaching conversations — the teacher needs time to think. Count to 5 in your head before speaking again.
Paraphrasing: Reflect the teacher's words back in slightly different language: "So what you're saying is that the silence feels uncomfortable, and that discomfort is what triggers the reversion to closed questions." This confirms understanding and helps the teacher hear their own thinking.
Probing: When the teacher gives a surface answer, go deeper: "You said 'I try but I can't change it.' What specifically happens in the moment when you revert? What are you feeling?" Probing is not interrogation — it's gentle curiosity that helps the teacher examine their practice more closely.
Providing data (not opinion): "I counted 1.8 seconds average wait time" is data. "Your wait time is too short" is opinion. Data invites reflection; opinion invites defensiveness.
If the Conversation Gets Stuck
If the teacher deflects: ("It's not just me — the students don't want to answer open questions.") Acknowledge the frustration, then redirect to what's within the teacher's control: "You're right — student participation is partly about them. But the thing you CAN control is the type of question and the time you give them. Let's focus there."

Known Limitations
Coaching conversations require trust. The conversation above assumes a willing teacher in a supportive coaching relationship. If the teacher is actively resistant (not just nervous but hostile to coaching), the conversation design must change — trust-building must precede instructional focus. This skill does not address severely resistant coaching dynamics, which require different strategies.
Coaching is most effective as part of a sustained cycle. One coaching conversation produces limited change. The meta-analysis by Kraft et al. (2018) found that coaching effects come from sustained cycles of goal-setting, observation, feedback, and adjustment. This conversation plan is one step in what should be an ongoing cycle.
The coach needs coaching skills, not just the conversation plan. Reading a script of questions is not the same as facilitating a genuine coaching dialogue.
