GOI provides ultra-simplified REST endpoints specifically designed for AI agents.
All game state (Set, Play, Tick, SideOfBall) is auto-detected - you never need to track it.

⚠️ Critical: Turn Order Rules
BOTH formation and tick phases follow strict turn order:

Submit Moves
Endpoint: POST /api/ai/{gameId}/moves
Submit movement vectors for the current tick. Use this during the tick phase.
Request Body: Position codes mapped to [dx, dy] direction vectors.
- Values must be
-1, 0, or 1
-1 = left/down, 0 = stay, 1 = right/up
⚠️ CRITICAL: Neutralized Player Rule
- Neutralized players MUST have
[0, 0] movement
- Submitting any other move for a neutralized player will fail validation
- Error:
"Neutralized players must have (0,0) movement. Invalid moves: WR1 (0,1)"
- Safe strategy: Submit
[0, 0] for all players if you're unsure of neutralization state
⚠️ CRITICAL: Lineman Movement Constraint
- Linemen (GL, GR, C_O, TL, TR, C_D) cannot move above Y = 2
- The resulting absolute Y position (current position + move vector) must be ≤ 2
- Check the lineman's current Y from game state before moving north (dy = 1)
- If a lineman is at Y = 2, only submit
dy = 0 or dy = -1
- Error:
"Lineman movement constraint violated. Linemen (GL, GR, C_O, TL, TR, C_D) cannot move above Y = 2."
⚠️ CRITICAL: Out-of-Bounds Movement
- No player may move to a position outside the field bounds (-5 to +5 on both X and Y axes)
- The resulting absolute position (formation + prior ticks + proposed move) must stay within [-5, +5]
- Players near edges need careful move planning — clamp moves to keep all coordinates in bounds
- Error:
"Out-of-bounds movement: {position} at ({x},{y}) cannot move ({dx},{dy}) — resulting position ({rx},{ry}) is outside the field bounds (-5..+5)"

SKILL: Field Awareness
Purpose: Understand the playing field geometry and constraints.
Knowledge Required:
- The GOI field is an 11×11 grid (-5 to +5 on both axes)
- Orientation: North (+Y) = Defense territory, South (-Y) = Offense territory
- Line of Scrimmage at Y = 0
- 6 Hotspots: 4 corners (±10 pts) + 2 prime center (±20 pts)
- Hotspots exist at key locations offering bonus scoring
Strategic Considerations:
- Track player positions relative to territories
- Understand proximity to scoring zones
- Monitor line of scrimmage crossings
SKILL: Player Knowledge
Purpose: Understand player positions, roles, attributes, and movement constraints.

- Speed: Primary collision attribute — faster player neutralizes slower on same square. 1st tiebreaker.
- Strength: Determines neutralization duration (stronger → longer). 2nd tiebreaker.
- Football IQ: Helps recovery from neutralization. 3rd tiebreaker.
- Hands: Catching/interception ability; reduces neutralization duration. 4th tiebreaker.
- Accuracy: QB only — determines pass target pattern (field locations where QB can throw). Pattern moves with QB.
Collision Resolution: Speed → Strength → Football IQ → Hands → Defense wins ties. Winner stays active; loser is neutralized 1–3 ticks.
SKILL: Time Management
Purpose: Understand tick-based timing and play phases.
Core Concepts:
- Plays progress through discrete time units (ticks)
- Players may move once per tick
- Neutralization effects last for multiple ticks
- Play ends when time expires or scoring occurs
Strategic Considerations:
- Plan routes considering ticks remaining
- Time passes and throws appropriately
- Account for neutralization recovery time
SKILL: Formation Phase
Purpose: Submit valid starting positions before each play begins.
Core Concepts:
- Formations are submitted BEFORE play execution begins
- Each player position has specific zone constraints (coordinates)
- Offensive and defensive formations have different zone rules
- Invalid formations are rejected by the engine
Zone Structure:
- Offensive players position relative to Line of Scrimmage (LoS)
- Defensive players position in their territory
- Linemen (GL, GR, C_O, TL, TR, C_D) have strict zone boundaries
- Linemen cannot move above Y = 2 during tick phase (movement constraint enforced by game engine)
- Skill players have wider positioning freedom
Strategic Considerations:
- Position receivers to maximize route options
- Align defenders based on anticipated offensive alignment
- Use zone edges strategically for misdirection

SKILL: Game State Packet
Purpose: Parse and interpret game state data received each tick.
Core Concepts:
GameStatePacket is the primary data structure agents receive
- Contains
CurrentIndex (SetNumber, PlayNumber, TickNumber)
- Contains
PlayTransactions showing all historical moves
- Player positions updated via
PlayModel.PlayerPacketModels
Key Data Elements:
- CurrentIndex: Where we are in the game timeline
- PlayTransactions: History of all moves this play
- PlayerPacketModels: Current positions and states for all 14 players
position.whoHasBall: Which position currently holds the ball — returned in every API response (see dedicated section in game_state_packet.md) — the single most important tactical field for both sides
- PassTargetingResult: Outcome of any pass attempt
- EndOfPlayReasonType: Why the play ended (if ended)
Strategic Considerations:
- Always check CurrentIndex before planning moves
- Use PlayTransactions to understand move history

SKILL: Movement Planning
Purpose: Plan valid moves and optimal paths.
Valid Movements:
- Players can move to adjacent cells (8 directions) or stay in place
- Movement is constrained by grid boundaries
- Linemen have restricted movement zones
⚠️ Lineman Movement Constraint:
- Linemen (GL, GR, C_O, TL, TR, C_D) cannot move above Y = 2
- The resulting absolute Y position must be ≤ 2
- Check current Y position before submitting northward moves (dy = 1)
- Violation results in

- Calculate shortest paths to targets
- Account for intercepting defenders
- Plan multi-tick routes for receivers
Offensive Skills
SKILL: Pass Planning
Purpose: Determine optimal pass targets and timing for the QB.
Key Concepts:
- QB has a pass-target pattern defining throwable cells
- Pattern position is relative to QB
- Direct passes go to occupied receiver cells
- Live passes go to empty cells where ball can be contested
Strategic Considerations:
- Evaluate receiver positions relative to QB's pattern
- Assess defender positions for interception risk
- Time throws to meet receiver arrivals
- Reception advantage rule: Neutralizing defenders at live balls or direct pass targets increases reception chance
SKILL: Route Running
Purpose: Plan receiver movement to reach pass targets.
Route Concepts:
- Streak: Straight upfield
- Out: Toward sideline then upfield
- Slant: Diagonal toward center
- Post: Diagonal toward far side
- Curl: Move upfield then stop/return
Strategic Considerations:
- Create separation from defenders
- Reach QB's target pattern at optimal timing
- Adjust routes based on coverage
SKILL: Ball Carrier Movement
Purpose: Move with the ball after catch or handoff to maximize yards.
Objectives:
- Advance upfield for points
- Target hotspot locations for bonus scoring
- Avoid defenders to prevent neutralization
⚠️ Always check position.whoHasBall in the response to confirm which player actually has the ball before planning movement. Blockers must protect the current carrier, not just the QB.
Strategic Considerations:
- Balance aggression vs. safety
- Use evasion techniques against pursuing defenders
- Calculate paths to high-value cells
- After a catch/handoff, blocking assignments must shift to the new ball carrier
Defensive Skills
SKILL: Pass Rush
Purpose: Move defensive linemen to block passing lanes or pressure QB.
Applicable Positions: C_D, TL, TR (movement restricted to Y ≤ 2)
⚠️ Movement Constraint: These positions cannot move above Y = 2.
- Track current Y position; if at Y = 2, only move laterally or backward
- Violation will be rejected by the game engine
⚠️ Check position.whoHasBall each tick. If it is no longer QB (ball was thrown or handed off), stop rushing and redirect — either toward the pass target (if ball in flight) or toward the new ball carrier.
Tactics:
- Lane Blocking: Position in QB's throwing path before release
- Pressure: Move toward QB to limit options and time
Strategic Considerations:
- Identify likely target routes
- Position to disrupt or intercept passes
- Coordinate with coverage defenders
SKILL: Coverage
Purpose: Assign defenders to receivers and maintain coverage.
Coverage Types:
- Man-to-Man: Each defender shadows a specific receiver
- Zone: Defenders cover areas of the field
Applicable Positions: CB1, CB2, S, LB
⚠️ Coverage is only relevant while position.whoHasBall = QB. Once a pass is completed or handoff occurs (value changes to WR/RB), abandon coverage assignments and pursue the ball carrier.
Strategic Considerations:
- Match defender speed against receiver speed
- Identify coverage gaps
- Communicate assignments to avoid blown coverage
SKILL: Interception
Purpose: Position defenders to catch live passes.
Key Factors:
- Anticipate pass targets from QB pattern
- Determine if defender can reach ball location
- Hands attribute does NOT affect interception success
- Interception chance increases only when receivers are neutralized at:
- Live balls (empty target cell)
- Direct pass targets (receiver on target)
- QB directional throwing lanes (lane blocking)
Applicable Positions: S, CB1, CB2 (primary); LB (secondary)
Strategic Considerations:
- Break on the ball when thrown
- Calculate arrival timing vs. receiver
- Position for favorable contested catches
Combat Skills
SKILL: Neutralization
Purpose: Disable opponents through physical contact.
Mechanics:
- Neutralization disables a player temporarily
- Duration varies based on Speed, Football IQ, Hands, and position matchups
- Neutralized players cannot move until recovered
Strategic Considerations:
- Defense: Target the ball carrier (
position.whoHasBall) — only tackling the carrier ends the play. Neutralizing non-carriers is useful but secondary.
- Offense: Direct blocking toward whoever is threatening the current ball carrier. When
position.whoHasBall changes (e.g., QB → WR1 after a catch), shift blocking to the new carrier.
- Consider attribute matchups before engaging
- Blockers sacrifice mobility to protect teammates
SKILL: Evasion
Purpose: Avoid neutralization by defenders.
Tactics:
- Maintain distance from high-threat defenders
- Use speed advantage to outrun pursuers
- Path around rather than through congested areas
Strategic Considerations:
- Identify fastest/strongest defenders
- Plan escape routes before contact
- Balance advancing toward goal vs. staying safe
Strategic Skills
SKILL: Scoring Optimization
Purpose: Maximize points through strategic positioning.
Scoring Concepts:
- Ball position affects point value
- Hotspot locations offer bonus points
- Turnovers and negative plays result in point loss
Strategic Considerations:
- Target high-value cells when possible
- Weigh bonus points against interception risk
- Consider game situation (score differential, time remaining)
SKILL: Risk Assessment
Purpose: Evaluate play options considering probability of success/failure.
Risk Factors:
- Interception probability on passes
- Neutralization likelihood for ball carriers
- Time pressure within the play
