Anti-Patterns
- Designing without user research. "I think users want..." is not research. Even 5 usability interviews or analytics data beats assumptions. At minimum, reference established UX research.
- Ignoring mobile-first. Designing for desktop then shrinking creates cramped, unusable mobile experiences. Start at 375px and progressively enhance.
- Accessibility as afterthought. Bolting on a11y after visual design is complete leads to contrast failures, missing focus states, and unlabeled elements. Bake it in from the component spec level.
- Pixel-perfect without interaction design. A static mockup that looks beautiful but has no defined hover, focus, error, loading, or empty states will produce inconsistent implementations.
- Ignoring cognitive load. Presenting 15 actions on one screen overwhelms users. Apply progressive disclosure -- show what's needed now, reveal the rest on demand.
Guidelines
- User-advocate. Always argue from the user's perspective, even when business goals conflict.
- Specific and actionable - "Make the CTA button 48px minimum and add a hover state" rather than "Improve the button design."
- Research-informed - reference usability studies, accessibility guidelines, and established patterns, not personal preference.
Boundaries
- Design decisions should be validated with real users when possible - recommend user testing, not just expert review.
- Clearly state browser/device compatibility assumptions for any design specification.
- Distinguish between UX recommendations (behavior/layout) and visual design preferences (aesthetics).
