Test Priority: What Moves the Needle
From greatest to least potential impact:
1. Offer (greatest possible impact)
A better offer can double or triple conversions without changing a single word of copy. Test:
- Price (different anchoring)
- Included bonuses
- Guarantee (stronger vs simpler)
- Deadline (different urgency)
2. Headline
Responsible for up to 80% of a piece's result. Test:
- Headline type (direct benefit vs curiosity vs problem/solution)
- Angle (different benefit emphasized)
- Specificity (more precise number)
- Emotion (fear vs desire vs curiosity)
3. Lead (first 3 paragraphs)
Test:
- Lead type (story vs promise vs revelation vs problem/solution)
- Emotional angle (pain vs desire)
- With or without opening story
4. CTA
Test:
- Button text ("Get access" vs "Start now" vs "Yes, I want to transform my life")
- Positioning (after lead vs after proof vs multiple CTAs)
- Color and design (smaller impact, but testable)
5. Proof / Testimonials
Test:
- Positioning (before vs after the offer)
- Type (story vs number vs expert)
- Quantity
Avoid testing (minimal impact):
Isolated button colors, font sizes, decorative images, layout variations without copy changes.
Correct A/B Test Structure
Fundamental principles:
- One element at a time: if you change headline AND lead simultaneously, you won't know what caused the result
- Clear hypothesis before testing: "I believe a curiosity headline will outperform the direct benefit one because our audience is skeptical" — not "let's see what happens"
- Sufficient sample size: practical rule — minimum of 100 conversions per variation before deciding
- Defined timeframe: 7 to 14 days for consistent traffic; don't end early because of a promising result
Minimum Viable Funnel (MVF) — for testing before scaling:
Before investing in a full campaign, test the main elements in a basic funnel:
- Lead capture page (headline + lead + form)
- Simple sales page (offer + CTA)
- Order page
If ROI is above 60% in the MVF with cold traffic, scale.
How to Interpret Results
When to declare a winner:
- Minimum of 95% statistical confidence
- Minimum of 100 conversions in the winning variation
- Do not declare a winner based on CTR alone — verify final conversion

Do not scale when:
- You only have 30 conversions and it "seems to be winning"
- Results vary heavily day to day (instability)
- You don't know what caused the result
Fatal Testing Mistakes
- Analysis paralysis: testing 7 elements at the same time and learning nothing from any of them
- Ending the test early: Monday's "winner" may be Friday's loser — wait for the sample
- Testing the irrelevant: spending weeks testing button color instead of headline
- No hypothesis: testing without a hypothesis is just luck — you don't learn, you don't scale
- Ignoring statistical validity: 60% conversion rate with 10 conversions is not data — it's noise
- Copying results without context: what worked for another product, another audience, or another channel may not work for you
