NestJS Framework Patterns
Purpose
Provide expert guidance on NestJS application architecture including module organization, dependency injection, request lifecycle (guards, interceptors, pipes, filters), microservice patterns, and production deployment. Covers NestJS 10+ with modern decorators and TypeScript strict mode.

Module definition with proper imports/exports:
import { Module } from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { TypeOrmModule } from '@nestjs/typeorm' ;
import { UsersController } from './users.controller' ;
import { UsersService } from './users.service' ;
import { User } from './entities/user.entity' ;
@Module ({
imports : [TypeOrmModule .forFeature ([User ])],
controllers : [UsersController ],
providers : [UsersService ],
exports : [UsersService ],
})
{}
export
class
UsersModule
Controllers — Keep Thin Controllers handle HTTP concerns only. Delegate all business logic to services:
import {
Controller , Get , Post , Put , Delete ,
Param , Body , Query , HttpCode , HttpStatus ,
ParseIntPipe , UseGuards ,
} from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { ApiTags , ApiOperation , ApiBearerAuth } from '@nestjs/swagger' ;
import { JwtAuthGuard } from '../common/guards/jwt-auth.guard' ;
import { UsersService } from './users.service' ;
import { CreateUserDto } from './dto/create-user.dto' ;
import { UpdateUserDto } from './dto/update-user.dto' ;
import { PaginationDto } from '../common/dto/pagination.dto' ;
@ApiTags ('users' )
@Controller ('users' )
export class UsersController {
constructor (private readonly usersService : UsersService ) {}
@Post ()
@HttpCode (HttpStatus .CREATED )
@ApiOperation ({ summary : 'Create a new user' })
create (@Body () createUserDto : CreateUserDto ) {
return this .usersService .create (createUserDto);
}
@Get ()
@UseGuards (JwtAuthGuard )
@ApiBearerAuth ()
findAll (@Query () pagination : PaginationDto ) {
return this .usersService .findAll (pagination);
}
@Get (':id' )
@UseGuards (JwtAuthGuard )
findOne (@Param ('id' , ParseIntPipe) id : number ) {
return this .usersService .findOneOrFail (id);
}
@Put (':id' )
@UseGuards (JwtAuthGuard )
update (
@Param ('id' , ParseIntPipe) id : number ,
@Body () updateUserDto : UpdateUserDto ,
) {
return this .usersService .update (id, updateUserDto);
}
@Delete (':id' )
@UseGuards (JwtAuthGuard )
@HttpCode (HttpStatus .NO_CONTENT )
remove (@Param ('id' , ParseIntPipe) id : number ) {
return this .usersService .remove (id);
}
}

import { IS_PUBLIC_KEY } from '../decorators/public.decorator' ;
@Injectable ()
export class JwtAuthGuard extends AuthGuard ('jwt' ) {
constructor (private reflector : Reflector ) {
super ();
}
canActivate (context : ExecutionContext ) {
const isPublic = this .reflector .getAllAndOverride <boolean >(IS_PUBLIC_KEY , [
context.getHandler (),
context.getClass (),
]);
if (isPublic) return true ;
return super .canActivate (context);
}
handleRequest (err : any , user : any ) {
if (err || !user) {
throw err || new UnauthorizedException ();
}
return user;
}
}
import { Injectable , CanActivate , ExecutionContext } from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { Reflector } from '@nestjs/core' ;
import { ROLES_KEY } from '../decorators/roles.decorator' ;
@Injectable ()

context.getClass (),
]);
if (!requiredRoles) return true ;
const { user } = context.switchToHttp ().getRequest ();
return requiredRoles.some ((role ) => user.roles ?.includes (role));
}
}
Interceptors
import {
Injectable , NestInterceptor , ExecutionContext , CallHandler , Logger ,
} from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { Observable , tap } from 'rxjs' ;
@Injectable ()
export class LoggingInterceptor implements NestInterceptor {
private readonly logger = new Logger (LoggingInterceptor .name );
intercept (context : ExecutionContext , next : CallHandler ): Observable <any > {
const req = context.switchToHttp ().getRequest ();
const { method, url } = req;
const start = Date .now ();
return next.handle ().pipe (
tap (() => {
const duration = Date .now () - start;
this .logger .log (`${method} ${url} — ${duration} ms` );
}),
);
}
}
Transform response interceptor:
import { Injectable , NestInterceptor , ExecutionContext , CallHandler } from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { Observable , map } from 'rxjs' ;
export interface ApiResponse <T> {
data : T;
meta ?: Record <string , any >;
}
@Injectable ()
export class TransformInterceptor <T> implements NestInterceptor <T, ApiResponse <T>> {
intercept (context : ExecutionContext , next : CallHandler ): Observable <ApiResponse <T>> {
return next.handle ().pipe (map ((data ) => ({ data })));
}
}
Pipes Custom validation pipe with whitelist:
import { ValidationPipe } from '@nestjs/common' ;
app.useGlobalPipes (
new ValidationPipe ({
whitelist : true ,
forbidNonWhitelisted : true ,
transform : true ,
transformOptions : {
enableImplicitConversion : true ,
},
}),
);
Exception Filters
import {
ExceptionFilter , Catch , ArgumentsHost , HttpException , HttpStatus , Logger ,
} from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { Request , Response } from 'express' ;
@Catch ()
export class AllExceptionsFilter implements ExceptionFilter {
private readonly logger = new Logger (AllExceptionsFilter .name );
catch (exception : unknown , host : ArgumentsHost ) {
const ctx = host.switchToHttp ();
const response = ctx.getResponse <Response >();
const request = ctx.getRequest <Request >();
const status =
exception instanceof HttpException
? exception.getStatus ()
: HttpStatus .INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR ;
const message =
exception instanceof HttpException
? exception.getResponse ()
: 'Internal server error' ;
this .logger .error (`${request.method} ${request.url} ` , exception);
response.status (status).json ({
statusCode : status,
message : typeof message === 'string' ? message : (message as any ).message ,
timestamp : new Date ().toISOString (),
path : request.url ,
});
}
}
Custom Decorators
import { SetMetadata } from '@nestjs/common' ;
export const IS_PUBLIC_KEY = 'isPublic' ;
export const Public = ( ) => SetMetadata (IS_PUBLIC_KEY , true );
import { SetMetadata } from '@nestjs/common' ;
export const ROLES_KEY = 'roles' ;
export const Roles = (...roles : string [] ) => SetMetadata (ROLES_KEY , roles);
import { createParamDecorator, ExecutionContext } from '@nestjs/common' ;
export const CurrentUser = createParamDecorator (
(data : string | undefined , ctx : ExecutionContext ) => {
const request = ctx.switchToHttp ().getRequest ();
return data ? request.user ?.[data] : request.user ;
},
);
Configuration with ConfigModule
import { Module } from '@nestjs/common' ;
import { ConfigModule as NestConfigModule } from '@nestjs/config' ;
import * as Joi from 'joi' ;
@Module ({
imports : [
NestConfigModule .forRoot ({
isGlobal : true ,
validationSchema : Joi .object ({
NODE_ENV : Joi .string ().valid ('development' , 'production' , 'test' ).default ('development' ),
PORT : Joi .number ().default (3000 ),
DATABASE_URL : Joi .string ().required (),
JWT_SECRET : Joi .string ().required (),
JWT_EXPIRATION : Joi .string ().default ('1h' ),

}),
],
})
export class AppConfigModule {}
Best Practices
One module per domain — Keep modules focused on a single bounded context.
Export only what is needed — Minimize the module's public API surface.
Use constructor injection — Avoid property injection; it is harder to test.
Global guards/interceptors via APP_GUARD — Register in app.module.ts providers.
Use DTOs for all input — Never trust raw @Body() without validation.
Custom exceptions extend HttpException — Maintain consistent error contracts.
Use @nestjs/config for env vars — Validate at startup with Joi.
Scope providers carefully — Default singleton scope; use REQUEST scope only when necessary.
Use @nestjs/swagger — Auto-generate API docs from DTOs and decorators.
Test with @nestjs/testing — Use Test.createTestingModule() for isolated unit tests.
Common Pitfalls Pitfall Problem Fix Circular dependency Two modules importing each other Use forwardRef() or extract shared logic to a third module Missing @Injectable() Provider not recognized by DI Always decorate services with @Injectable() REQUEST scope leak Entire dependency chain becomes request-scoped Minimize REQUEST-scoped providers; use @Inject(REQUEST) sparingly No whitelist: true Extra properties pass validation Set whitelist and forbidNonWhitelisted in global ValidationPipe Heavy controllers Controllers contain business logic Move logic to services; controllers handle HTTP only Forgetting async Promise returned but not awaited All DB operations should be async/await
