# UpGrade Integration Skill for Claude A [Claude Skill](https://github.com/anthropics/skills) that helps integrate [Carnegie Learning's UpGrade](https://github.com/CarnegieLearningWeb/UpGrade) A/B testing platform into LMS and EdTech applications. ## What is UpGrade? UpGrade is an open-source A/B testing platform designed specifically for educational technology, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Schmidt Futures. Unlike generic A/B testing tools, it supports: - **Group-level assignment** (entire classrooms get the same condition) - **Consistency rules** (students don't get re-randomized) - **Educational context metadata** (grade, subject, proficiency) ## What This Skill Does When you ask Claude to help with A/B testing in educational apps, this skill provides: - SDK integration patterns for JavaScript, React, and Next.js - LTI 1.3 identity mapping for LMS integration - Comprehensive troubleshooting for common pitfalls - Decision point patterns for educational experiments - Production-ready code templates ## Installation ### Claude Code CLI ```bash # Add to your project cp -r . .claude/skills/upgrade-integration/ # Or install from marketplace (if published) /plugin marketplace add your-username/upgrade-integration-skill ``` ### Claude.ai Upload the skill folder through the Claude.ai interface. ## Usage The skill auto-activates when you ask Claude about: - A/B testing in educational apps - Experiment integration for LMS - Feature flags in EdTech - UpGrade SDK usage Example prompts: - "Help me integrate UpGrade into my React learning app" - "How do I handle LTI identity mapping with UpGrade?" - "Set up an A/B test for different feedback timing" ## Contents ``` upgrade-integration/ ├── SKILL.md # Main skill instructions ├── README.md # This file ├── resources/ │ ├── identity-mapping.md # LTI/xAPI identity patterns │ ├── pitfalls-and-edge-cases.md # Troubleshooting guide │ └── decision-point-patterns.md # Educational experiment patterns └── templates/ ├── react-hook.tsx # React Context + hooks ├── nextjs-api-route.ts # Server-side + LTI handler └── vanilla-js.js # Framework-agnostic (UMD) ``` ## Key Topics Covered ### Integration Pitfalls - Third-party cookie blocking in LMS iframes - Race conditions between init() and getAssignment() - LTI identity mismatches - Group assignment drift when students change classes - Caching and stale assignments - Network failures and offline handling - Shared device (Chromebook cart) problems ### Educational Experiment Patterns - UI/UX variants - Pedagogical approaches (worked examples vs practice) - Feedback timing and specificity - Adaptive algorithm parameters - Gamification elements - Hint systems - Assessment formats ### Code Templates Production-ready implementations for: - React hooks with caching and fallbacks - Next.js API routes with LTI launch handling - Vanilla JavaScript (UMD module) ## Related Resources - [UpGrade GitHub](https://github.com/CarnegieLearningWeb/UpGrade) - [UpGrade Documentation](https://upgrade-platform.gitbook.io/docs/) - [Claude Skills Documentation](https://github.com/anthropics/skills) - [LTI 1.3 Specification](https://www.imsglobal.org/spec/lti/v1p3) ## License MIT License - see [LICENSE](LICENSE) ## Contributing Contributions welcome! Please open an issue or PR for: - Additional integration patterns - Framework-specific templates (Vue, Svelte, etc.) - Bug fixes or clarifications - New educational experiment patterns
